A south easterly blustery wind and a decent sea swell put plenty of colour back in the water for the mid-week match. Although fishing a high tide from 7pm into an ebbing sea there were quite a few marks that were not fishable due to wind, causing problems with loose weed washing around in the swell. Small codling in the 1 lb - 2 lb range were on the scales with 3 flat fish and a billet, with best fish of 4 lb 09 oz, weighed-in by William Atkinson.

Another rough south easterly sea swell but fishing an uncomfortable night due to constant heavy rain, also still a problem was the loose sea weed swirling around close to shore as members fished an ebbing to low water tide.
Despite this there were plenty of small codling to weigh in along with whiting, billet, flounder and rockling.

By the evening the easterly sea swell had increased, but it lacked colour as the clarity of the water was quite clear and some of the fishing marks failed to produce fish. Club members fished the wettest night this season as heavy rain fell throughout the 4 hr match.
9 members caught 31 fish with the heaviest at 4 lb 08 oz from Rob Allison.

There was a much improved result in the evenings match as a high tide ebbing from a moderate south south easterly lazy long distance swell created movement for the fish to venture closer to shore in their hunt for food.
Once the tie had turned and the scaurs began to show, anglers were able to cast and reach the codling which had dropped back into runs and holes along the shore. Ian Russell not only had a winning heaviest bag of fish - 12 lb 15 oz - 4 fish, including one of 8 lb 02 oz. This is the Heaviest Fish for January beating Paul Kilpatrick’s - 4 lb 04 oz codling, caught in the Ship Inn Open match.

There was still enough sea swell left for the match but anglers had to find a sheltered mark to fish from a blustery cold northerly wind and fishing a low water into flooding tide meant they would be on open scaurs.

Whitby Sea Anglers Association members entered into the last month of winter shore angling which started last October 2002 and although this can be a quiet month all that is needed to bring the fish in to feed is a good sea swell.
In the match the sea conditions were calm and a mild night as anglers cast out into an all ebbing tide, 18 whiting, 5 codling and a billet were weighed-in, once again the better fish still remain to feed on hard ground with the best bag of the night being caught by Colin Stainthorpe.

Bell Trophy
Conditions were again poor as usual for this competition with a strong westerly wind throughout the day, there were 87 anglers taking part from nine clubs. Remind me to tell you not to turn up on time next year as we were stood around waiting for half an hour in the cold for everyone else to turn up. But despite the weather there was a much improved catch on last years with 34 anglers weighing-in 86 lb 06 oz from 60 assorted fish.
Winners this year were Cloughton with 16 lb 15 oz agg. 2 lb 01 oz.
Whitby were 3rd with the most weight (but the most anglers) 22 lb 06 oz agg. 1 lb 07 oz.
The winner of the individual singles knockout was Neil Inglis who kept his form to stop the new boy in the club Jason Ebison in the runner up position.
The doubles knockout winners were Brian Harland & Adrian Nelson.
Runners up - Colin Stainthorpe 7 Steve Ingleston.
