Neutral Density Filters |
ND - Neutral Density filters reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor.
ND2 - by 50%
ND4 - by 75%
ND8 - by 87.5%
therefore enabling a longer exposure which captures movement, yet with a perfect exposure.
ND2 - by 1 stop - 1 second becomes 2 seconds
ND4 - by 2 stops - 1 second becomes 4 seconds
ND8 - by 3 stops - 1 second becomes 8 seconds
4 stops, a combination of stacking an ND2 & ND8, turns a 1 second exposure to 15 seconds.
Step 1 - mount camera on a tripod & compose a subject. Pick a focal point & switch lens to MF (manual focus).
Step 2 - in AV (Aperture Value) set the aperture between f13 - 22, depress the shutter half way & mentally record the exposure.
Step 3 - now set camera to TV (Time Value). Set time to the value recorded in step 2 (ie 1 second).
Step 4 - turn back the exposure dial 3 clicks per 'Stop' value of the intended ND filter. (ie 3 clicks for an ND2 will give a 2 second exposure)
Step 4 - remove eye piece & replace with view finder cover (some Nikons have a sliding shutter, Canons have a rubber cover) this stops stray from light entering the view finder from altering the exposure.
Step 5 - set the camera to remote or timed release.
Step 6 - take the picture & review. Add another ND filter & alter exposure time accordingly.
