Saturday 26th April 2024 - Wilson Arms, Sneaton
Good evening ladies & gentlemen.
Please could we all show our appreciation to Dawn, Dan and their staff for their hospitality here at the Wilson Arms, thank you.
This is our 70th presentation evening, sadly our treasurer did not release Club Funds and take us all out to celebrate our 70th presentation evening?
Before I quickly summarise the season, I think you will all agree a big thank you is in order to Jason for his commitment to overseeing the weigh-ins, even when he may not have fished himself, and nice to Bernard also keeping an eye on proceedings. Thank you.
----------
Match for match this season mirrored 1997, a remarkable year for two of our prestigious members Brian & Bernard 28yrs ago.
Brian - Wed 11th Dec - 17 lb 13 oz, & Bernard - Wed 12th Mar - 20 lb 06 oz
------
Back to this season’s weigh-in was nye-on 730 lbs, and 400 fish down on last season!
We had twenty one, including 2 juniors fishing members, 19 being the max to fish a match and 5 being the least, with a 10 being the average. Nobody fished all the matches.
Twelve different members won a match, 11 members won HFish.
Monthly Sweeps were well supported as last season - 10 for HBoFish and 12 for HFish.
October
This was Brian Harland’s month by only a little over 2 lbs to Denis Thompson.
First match of the season and first ‘double-figure’ bag falls to Denis 13 lb 02 oz (5) while Tink takes HFish 4 lb 05 oz.
Sun 20th Storm Ashley.
Wed 30th Jason HFish 6 lb 03½ oz enough to clinch the James Jamsy Moore Dedicated Official Trophy.
Funnily enough it was Sun 29th Oct 2023, 1yr ago, when Dave Perrett clinched the same trophy.
Memorable moments.
October was the Clubs best weigh-in 271 lbs - 167 fish.
November
Brian’s month, by a little under 10 lbs to Jason.
What a month, from Lightest fish to win HFish of the season, Colin 7 oz, to the best bag of fish 21lb 06 oz from Brian.
Eight matches, and 5 different winners overall, when it came to HFish Jason won 3 times, and Brian once with an 8 lb’er.
Annual Open, the best any member could do was 27th Davey Turnbull 8 lb 12½ oz (2).
Many thanks to my wife, Chris, and Lacy Elwick [Tink’s partner] for selling the raffle tickets.
Memorable moments
6 ‘double-figure bags.
December
Rob’s month, of the 7 matches only 2 ‘double figure’ bags, 15 lb on the first and 12 lb on the second which secured him the Christmas match Trophy while Brian won the Michael Deadman Memorial Trophy 7 lb 06 oz
Wed 4th, Match 19 and Brian is the first to join the 100 lb Club.
Sun 8th Storm Darragh, a 31ft wave was recorded at 06.00hrs
Wed 11th and Mike Saunders records his first win.
Now if Bernard had not retired from the Committee and as weigh-master he would have won the James Jamsy Dedicated official Trophy from Jason by ½ oz.
Well done to Dylan Goldsmith securing ‘HFish Out of Competition’ in the Cloughton Festive Sweepstake during the Christmas break 11 lb 10 oz, and Neil was on hand to photograph it.
January
January was my month, winning 3 HBoFish and 3 HFish matches, one after the other, finishing 12 lb ahead of Dave Perrett.
Just two ‘double-figure’ bags, both on the same night Wed 8th Jan. The first from Davey Turnbull, 17 lb 04 oz which included the HFish of the season 10 lb 10 oz, caught on the last cast. The second bag from myself 11 lb 09 oz inc 5 lb 12 oz. Davey always has to go one better and beats me on every occasion I might win HFish.
Dave Perrett joins the 100 lb Club also on that night.
February
This was Brian’s month, his third.
Bell Trophy, and we had to give it back, coming in at 3rd Place.
Sun 16th and a big thank you to all that turned out for the Secretary’s Challenge Trophy, we won, and many thanks to Davey, fishing on his birthday, who, with a 4 lb’er sealed our win. Tink, Eric and Brian were the others to weigh-in.
We still trail 5-4 to Cloughton - next year…
Wed 19th and Tink joins the 100 lb Club, and Roman weighed-in his first fish 1 lb 04 oz securing both HBoFish and HFish for a junior.
March
March was again Brian’s month, his 4th.
Dave Perrett started the month with both wins, and secures the Monthly Sweep for HBoFish 6 lb 02½ oz (5).
Sun 9th, a rare appearance of Dave Hambley secured the HFish of the Month 3 lb 10 oz
Wed 12th to be honest I was gobsmack when Rich demonstrated that his rod was in fact two halves of different rods. A quick phone call to Chris, and she got my spare rod out of the garage for Rich, and he was fishing by 19.25hrs.
Sun 23rd and a cartoonist was req’d to capture the moment Rob had lost a good fish off to capture the expletives in a bubble.
Wed 26th a short lived aurora, and Jason has to scare off a seal blocking his path back to ‘bag-rock’.
Last match of the season and I take both HBoFish and HFish wins.
---------------
‘What If Points were Used’ 10 points are awarded for a win, then 9 for 2nd, 8 for 3rd etc. as you can see…..
The top two stayed the same, Brian and Dave.
I would have been 3rd and not 6th.
Denis would have been 6th and not 7th.
Tink would have been a lowly 7th and not 3rd.
The system rewards those who fish every match of the season.
Food for thought.
Now for the presentation.

- Denis missed the weigh-in due to a poorly signed ‘road closure’.
- Both Brian and David blank, losing their 100% weigh-in after only 12 matches.

Memorable Moments
Rob Taylor, on his back swing, hooks Peter’s rod and very nearly casts it out to sea.
Dylan Goldsmith, having bought a second hand reel, found out the hard way the anti-reverse did not work.
Fishing Cowbar Steel Mike Saunders lost his seat box, and all his kit, when an errant wave washed it into the sea.
Bus, taxi & traffic lights & Dave Perrett very nearly missed the weigh-in!
Members Christmas match - Xmas match, Neil Eglon slipped fell on his rod, snapping it in two and bruised his ribs.
On the way home, Davey is pulled by the Old Bill. With Blues flashing he pulls into Staithes bus stop, and winds down the window. The stench of skunk from the bus stop was overwhelming, as its occupants fled. The officers approached the car and asked if Davey was smoking weed. The irony! Asking why he was out so late, he explained he’d been fishing, and had to produce his 10 lb 10 oz cod as proof.
Brian did not fish, shock, horror, he opted to go to a works-do party.
Bored Denis Thompson & Bernard Vasey were competing to catch the largest crab on the East pier - Bernard won with a brown crab.
So who wins?
Two halves of different rods, Rich Deadman winner of most Memorable Moment.
Thank you all for your participation.
