Whitby win Secretary’s Challenge Trophy
Low water 12.30hrs, 1.48m, 1024mbar, 3°C, TR 3.9m
Sunday was ‘The Secretary’s Challenge Trophy’ day where Cloughton Rocks & Whitby Sea Anglers compete for the tankard [donated by Peter Horbury in 2016]. Every year the two Clubs take turns to host the match, this year it was Cloughton’s turn.
Each Club puts £50 into the prize pool, and each competitor £5. The Club with the best aggregate wins the trophy. The prize pool is split 50/50 for three prizes for both HBoFish & HFish, split 50/30/20, all in, all out.
Typical February, the weather was cold and very inclement, with rain, drizzle and hail showers [big coat and thick gloves] very unpleasant at times. The SEasterly wind, gusting 20mph+, hampered casting and bite detection. Sea state colourless, a scratching match on a growing SEasterly, once the flood took hold, up to 6ft at times. Fishing from 10.00 - 16.00hrs low water 12.30hrs, with the boundary Robinhoods Bay, Landing Scaur to Coble Landing, Filey. As it happened each Club had 11 members fishing.
The weigh-in was at The Red Lion, Cloughton where Chris France, instead of resting his new knee, gave up his Sunday afternoon to oversee proceedings - thank you.
The weigh-in was sparse, 5 codlings and a blegg from six anglers - 14 lb 13 oz, Av 2 lb 08 oz. Cloughton weighed-in 2 codlings for 4 lb 15 oz giving a 7 oz aggregate. Whitby weighed-in 3 codlings, and a blegg for 9 lb 14 oz giving a winning aggregate of 14 oz.
Two good fish 4 lb 10 oz from Davey Turnbull and Dan Bennett 3 lb 03 oz.
