and brings the proceedings to order, reminding everyone of the boundaries, fish sizes, and weigh-in location & times.
Location
Wild campers in campervans, and fellow competitors at Cloughton meant no parking spaces for me!
So turn around and headed for Hayburn Whyke.

Bell Trophy day, the inter-club-tournament organised by Scarborough Rocks. By invitation 5 local clubs compete for the Sana Bell based on a Teams aggregate weigh-in [with a Team minimum of 8 to be paid to enter]. Peter Horbury, Colin Stainthorpe, Brian Harland, Davey Turnbull, Denis Thompson, Paul Short and Ryan Collinson. Anglers start to gather from 08.00hrs at the Oasis Café, Marine Drive, Scarborough, after registration, and a brief update on fish sizes from Scarborough Rocks Secretary Ian Thompson anglers depart for their chosen marks.
Fifty five anglers entered to fish the 4hr match from 10.00 - 14.00hrs within the boundaries of Argyle Gulley, Hayburn Whyke to Cobble Landing, Filey.
Close to shore and localised sea state SWesterly 1-2ft thick with colour, SWesterly winds gusting 40mph. Clear skies, bright sunshine just added to the predicted poor catch forecast, but isn’t always on Bell Trophy day?
Local road closures made it interesting for a few to arrive on time, and again for travelling to their chosen marks. It was suggested a few road signs may have been mislaid by Friday & Saturday night revellers!
Once fishing the wind started to ease, swells were consistent right down to low water. An hour after low water the swells started to grown. Fish bites, some reported the whole day went without just one! Whilst others reported shortening casting times due to being cleaned off by crabs and bait robbers [small fish].
All too soon it was 14.00hrs and the long slog back to the car. Back at Scarborough Rocks Social Club, Denis McCausland oversaw the weigh-in of only 16 assorted fish for 16 lb 14 oz 15 drms, a 1 lb 01 oz average fish.
Weigh-in closed 15.00hrs, Ian Thompson, Denis McCausland and WSAA Secretary Peter Horbury retired to a back room to crunch the numbers, sort winners envelopes for Team HBoFish, HFish sweeps, and overall winners.
On behalf of last year’s winners Cloughton Rocks, Mick Chadwick, presented the Sana Bell to Peter Horbury on behalf of WSAA, this year’s winners. This is the 6th time Whitby Sea Anglers have won since its inauguration in 1926. [WSAA last won in 2018]. Next year is the 100th and Scarborough Rocks will be looking for ideas to celebrate it.
