17 members in total, another good turnout, well done and thank you for taking the time.
As last year, Honorary Chairman William Atkinson brought the meeting to order and thanked everyone for coming.
A last minute rush to fill in and collect club subscriptions as members were reminded they would not be able to vote. Dave Perrett confirmed receipt of all named envelopes.
1. Minutes of last year’s AGM –
Secretary Peter Horbury asked for a proposer & seconder to confirm the minutes of last years AGM as a true. Posted on the web site the day after the AGM on 3rd September 2015.
Proposed William Atkinson, seconded James Gilpin. Carried
2. Chairman’s report –
Honorary Chairman William Atkinson thank the officials for their continued efficiency in the smooth running of the club. He, as last year reported he had not been able to fish as often as he had done in previous years but this year was fighting fit. William Atkinson went on to say that he had witnessed occasions were dirty fish being brought to the scales. This was to stop, shale, sand and overly wet fish were not to be accepted at the scales. Repeat offenders will be refused at the scales.
3. Secretaries report -
1. Well here we are again, and thank you all for attending tonight, and tight lines for the coming season.
2. Apologies received from Dave Johnson, Mick Beedle, and Colin Stainthorpe as he would be arriving late
3. Apologies also sent from James Moore, sends his regards, and will be sponsoring the Open again in the same format. Many thanks.
4. Open registered for Penn points with Cliff Brown at Sea Angler as Alan Yates has retired.
5. Clubman Series - Cliff Brown now is our contact. Anyone excluded due to the Clubman series rules to let me know please? Ben, Rob, Cassy.
6. Web site doing well just shy of 670, 000 since launch (Timeline).
7. If we could have a photograph every match as last year it would be appreciated, and anyone can have a photo taken.
8. Sometimes Dave & I don’t think members appreciate the amount of time we spend on Club business. We agreed to keep a tally, mine came to 343 hrs for last season.
9. The eagle-eyed may have spotted the ‘2016 - 2017 Dates’ web page. The AGM’s always seem a tad long winded, I believe this is unnecessary as many aspects of the club are laid down in stone & in the Rules. When the Open is, as and when the Knockouts start, the Christmas match, last Sunday in December etc. If the Treasurer feels an increase in any fees is necessary he makes it known in his report.
10. In order to speed up the AGM I will be proposing (already seconded) members submit in writing any ‘Any Other Business’ items in clear wording with seconders already in place. Prior to the AGM so everyone knows what is going to be discussed. This is what other clubs and organisations do.
11. I will not be organising the Knockouts this year and would like to think a committee member will take this on. After one member decided to write derogatory remarks on the Cloughton Facebook page I was on the point of resigning. Pete Halder removed the post and then informed me, as, he too, was offended and sent me a copy which I brought to the Treasurer Dave Perrett’s attention that same morning. The member was spoken to and apologised to Dave Perrett, saying he was under the influence. I have yet to receive an apology.
Dave Perrett interrupted and asked who had taken the post down, the member concerned or Pete Halder. Peter Horbury confirmed it was Pete Halder. Dave Perrett asked Peter Horbury to confirm he had not had an apology as one had been promised as the member confirmed he was out of order and under the influence of drink at the time of posting. Peter Horbury confirmed no apology had been received.
Peter Horbury continued:-
12. Just a polite reminder we are guests in the Fleece after all our matches and it hasn’t gone un-noticed by drinkers that some members smell less than ‘sweet’. Please try your best not to enter the pub in smelly overalls.
13. Spoke to Paul Hogarth this morning and he would like to thank members for parking responsibly. He also reports over the last month a 55 plate Black Honda 4X4 was obstructing the lane but he has this in hand.
14. Again another reminder to help with the weigh-ins. Could the 1st committee member back please get the scales out, and be prepared to start a book to help James, Bernard & myself.
15. Secretary’s Challenge Trophy, last year we hosted the match, sadly we lost. This year we get to pick the day & tide. The hosts set the boundaries.
16. Please let me know ASAP of any Open sponsors, so they can be put on the web site.
17. On the Open I would again like to thank Dave, James, Bernard, Rob, Paula, Malcolm & Colin who do help at the Open with selling raffle tickets and running the weigh-in. If other members could help where possible it would be appreciated. Those that do, get a pint to say thank you.
18. Lastly, sadly Richard Deadman lost his father last Thursday. He would like to present the club with a trophy in his father’s memory. He is asking for suggestions, is there anything that doesn’t as yet have a trophy, or anything members would like him to consider. Suggestions to Dave or myself ASAP.
Thank you.
4. Treasurers report –
Was presented by Dave Perrett, he in turn thanked all our sponsors & contributors to our open without whom it could not go ahead. Dave seconded Peter Horbury’s request for more help from members at the Open especially with the folding of raffle tickets as along with clearing the presentation table of food delayed the presentation.
Dave reported that Jefferson’s Builders had reneged on their £100 sponsorship, (despite a reminder letter from WSAA) money which he had spent on prizes, was then funded from club funds.
Confirmed as true James Gilpin, seconded Paula Pitman.
5. Re-Election of Officials –
Honorary Chairman:- William Atkinson proposed Dave Perrett, seconded James Gilpin. Carried.
Treasurer:- Dave Perrett proposed Bernard Vasey, seconded by Peter Horbury. Carried.
Secretary:- Peter Horbury proposed William Atkinson, seconded Paula Pitman. Carried.
Honorary Club President:- William Atkinson. Proposed Peter Horbury, seconded James Gilpin. Unanimously carried.

9. Christmas match -
Sunday 18th December 2016 - Dave Perrett confirmed he had already been to the Stakesby Arms and spoken to Tracey Stevens and booked. Everyone agreed the hospitality at the Stakesby Arms was excellent. Dave Perrett confirmed the current £12 entry fee was enough to cover the event ie the cost of the meal etc.
Dave Perrett confirmed the current pay-out for the Heaviest Bag match:-
1st - £50
2nd - £30
3rd - £20
And £25 for Heaviest Fish.
Malcolm & Paula Pitman informed the meeting that Hook, Line & Sinker would again sponsor the Christmas match. They were thanked by the members.
The format was proposed to stay the same by Bernard Vasey, seconded Dave Perrett. Carried
10. Open Match –
Confirmed as Sunday 13th November 2016.
Peter Horbury had already confirmed James Moore’s sponsorship, he would give £100, as last year to be allocated as the Committee sees fit. Again as last year.
James Gilpin confirmed Keith’s Sports, Saltburn-by-the-sea.
Ben Laws, Java Café £50 for 17th Place, again as in previous years.
Malcolm Pitman confirmed £100 from Sea Spray.
Dave Perrett confirmed the Fleece £200. (£150 + £50 for the food)
William Atkinson would approach James Noble but saw no problem as he had already said he would but will be seeing him shortly.
William Atkinson to confirm Peter Halder as we have a reciprocal arrangement with him and Scarborough Fishing Festival £50.
Mick Beedle, not present, confirmed £75 for 1st & 2nd Heaviest Flat Fish. Again as last year split £50/£25.
Junior sponsors £20 confirmed by James Gilpin, Andrew Cass, & Colin Stainthorpe. Members didn’t think there would be any change from Rob Allison and George Middlemas. £100 in total.
Dave Perrett would sponsor the ladies.
Malcolm and Paula would talk to WCSA skippers for their continued support.
Tina Dawn, Two Dogs, Shy Torque III – Dave Perrett informed members that Richard Ward is not well at this time, and members wished him a speedy recovery.
Ben Laws commented that members should try and secure sponsorship now ready to be announced at the pre-open meeting (confirmed Tuesday 11th October). Agreed.
Members were thanked for their generosity.
Open fishing times 10am to 4pm.
Weigh-in 4.30pm to 5.15pm.
Entrance fee £12 - Treasurer Dave Perrett was asked his opinion as to the finances, and replied with the current pledged sponsorship, in-line with last year, albeit without Jefferson’s Builders there would be no need for any increase. Ben Laws asked for an increase to £15 with a potential £1,000 first place prize. Chairman William Atkinson remarked that we had in the past increased the prize money with little to no increase in participants. Dave Perrett confirmed numbers of between 80 - 130 anglers. Paul Short reported our open date already clashed with one of the bigger matches further north.
Ben Laws confirmed he would again run the Pairs, as last year (£5/pair entry)
Paula Pitman asked if the same arrangements were to be put in place as last year, in that members would bring their raffle prizes to the shop, Hook, Line & Sinker. Confirmed, as being very effective and very handy on the night.
Proposed to stay the same by Peter Horbury, seconded Bernard Vasey. Carried.
Bar Break
Peter Horbury asked to confirm 1st match - confirmed as Wednesday 28th September as an oversight from earlier in the meeting as it wasn't mentioned.
11. Knockouts –
Peter Horbury, again confirmed he would not be organising and asked for a committee member to volunteer. No one, despite much banter would take it on declaring they were all too busy. Eventually, after many a pregnant pause, Jason Ebison said he would. Announcing the Knockout Rules would be strictly adhered to.
12. Heaviest Fish & Heaviest Bag of Fish -
Of the month sweeps, members thought that Rob Allison would be happy to organise. Entry fee £1/£1 would remain the same. Entries to be collected on first match 28th September. Entry is strictly payment in advance for commencement in October.
13. Any other business –
1. Peter Horbury proposed & seconded by Chairman William Atkinson, Dave Perrett be made an honorary member for all the work he has done over the years. Carried
2. Peter Horbury proposed & seconded by Chairman William Atkinson that all new WSAA club business ie Any Other Business be submitted to the Club Secretary (of the day) 4 weeks prior to the AGM in writing. The proposal must be seconded and signed by both parties with clear wording of anything to be discussed.
James Gilpin said he didn’t agree with that and if that was the case why have an AGM.
Peter Horbury said that there are many an occasion where the AGM gets complicated, rowdy, where we seem to go around and around arguing on the same issues every year. To speed up the AGM it would bring some order in that members would know in advance what was to be discussed and voted on. James Gilpin looked at his watch and commented its just gone 8pm, we are doing well tonight.
Not carried.
- 0 -
Members were then asked if there was any other business.
3. James Gilpin asked for confirmation as to whether Skiningrove jetty engineering works have been completed and would it now be open for members to fish.
It was confirmed the works are completed and members could fish there.
4. Andrew Cass asked if the club would pay for WSAA logo printed hoodies, saying we looked scruffy at the Bell Trophy when other clubs all had printed hoodies.
Dave Perrett asked to the cost, as in the past when this subject had been broached it was the cost of the hoodies and embroidery that had made it too expensive. There were too many qualities of hoodies with vastly varying prices.
As in the past members who wanted WSAA embroidered garments had taken their own to Mike Coates at Laughing Whale, Sandsend.
Members reported he was too expensive, and that we should get a new design.
Peter Horbury told members he had offered to buy (on behalf of WSAA) the design from Mike Coates and had not realised he would hold the copyright.
Paula Pitman suggested getting a sponsor for the clothing with their logo and WSAA.
Ben Laws, Matty Lamb, Jason Ebison reported they knew of contacts that could supply printed and embroidered garments and would report back with prices.
5. Dave Perrett put to members what Peter Horbury had already announced, the memorial Trophy from Richard Deadman, did they have any thoughts?
Ben Laws suggested a Members Day fishing, like other clubs arrange. Coach / mini bus laid on by the club and an ‘away day’ fishing for members with a Trophy for the winner. The idea was welcomed by members irrespective if it were not linked to the memorial trophy.
Other suggestions put forward by Dave Perrett:-
a. A mid-week Trophy which would entail recording members total weight for all Wednesday evening matches, or even all Sunday Matches, as some other clubs do.
b. A Trophy for the Heaviest Fish at the Christmas match.
c. A Heaviest Other Fish trophy ie Pollock.
As with all the suggestions it would be decided by Richard Deadman and these ideas would be reported back to him by Peter Horbury.
6. Finally, Paula Pitman asked if everyone was happy with the Wednesday night soup and if members had a favourite flavour. With some humorous suggestions all is well and Paula was thanked by members.
William Atkinson thank all for attending and the meeting closed 21.05 hrs (a record).
Members retired to the bar.
William Atkinson confirmed (with the bar staff) the Open Match meeting could be held Tuesday 11th October, in the upstairs bar (as normal) as the downstairs room would be occupied.
