Winter anglers had poor sport
Whitby Gazette 19th April 1973.
The mild, open winter, with few rough seas and frosts, has been blamed by local sea anglers for the poorest sport they can remember.
At the annual dinner of Whitby Sea Anglers' Association, at the Salmon Leap Hotel (Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Gibson), Sleights on Friday evening. Mr. Ron Wood chairman, said "I have never known a winter like it since we started our roving matches. And never have we had such a low aggregate weight." He said fish did not seem to be inshore in abundance as they used to be.
Mr. Wood referred to the loss the Association had sustained by the death of Mr. Arthur Humble a vice-president, and loyal supporter of the Association. He also paid tribute to the work of treasurer, Mr. Davis Johnson, in the absence, owing to business reasons, of Mr. John Swales from competitions. He also referred to an increased number of young members, and said he hoped support for contests would be better next year.
Mr. Swales said the total aggregate weight of fish landed in competitions was 364 lb 12 1/2 oz against 1,203 lb last year.
