Low water 12.40 hrs, 1.8 metres, 1013 mbar, 8°C
Whitby Sea Anglers Assoc. held its annual one day Open competition on Sunday 17th - its 40th such event since the club was established in 1924.
One hundred and fifty one anglers, and one junior were competing for the top prize of £1,000 - jointly sponsored by Hook, Line & Sinker, Whitby, and Wilf Nobles, Ruswarp, Plant Hire & Construction. Many thanks to all our sponsors without whom this popular match could not take place.
Fishing a 6hr match from 10.00 - 16.00hrs, sea state, a welcome North Easterly swell 3 - 4ft with some colour. A NNEasterly wind 14 - 17mph, moderate cloud cover, and thankfully no rain. Due to recent seas there was some weed in the surf, kelp stalks and bladder rack fouled lines on the ebbing tide forcing some to move marks. Fishing down to low water 12.40hrs, 1.8 metres. The ebb, probably due to the high pressure was much larger than forecast, allowing anglers access to their favourite low water marks, and gullies.
At the scales Bernard Vasey & Jason Ebison were ready and opened early as anglers queued. Sixty three of the 152 rods weighed-in a total of 155 fish, for 379 lb 12 oz - 150 codlings and 5 bleggs. It was shortly after 17.00hrs before the weigh-in was complete [queue closed at 17.00hrs], and anglers retired to the Fleece, where Landlady Carla Smith had laid on refreshments.
Admittedly the ‘number-crunching’ took a little longer than expected, apologies but two tickets had the ‘same name’ and one was totally ‘nameless’ both were very pertinent as it transpired. The Officials did their best to rectify the ‘omissions’, and thanks for your understanding, and all ended well.
No Ladies, and no flat fish weighed-in. Just one junior took part, catching 3 undersized fish his father reported, and Treasurer Dave Perrett awarded him £30 for taking part from the Junior sections sponsors.
Secretary Peter Horbury has received one complaint [via the clubs web site] from a local land owner over parking, and will report back after ‘hopefully smoothing things over’ this week.
Winning Pairs:-
1st - Mark Thomas & Matthew Hillaby - 19 lb 15½ oz
2nd - Andy Crowe & Chris Scaife - 19 lb 14½ oz
Heaviest Fish Superpool:-
1st - Michael Petch, Guisborough - 10 lb 00 oz
2nd - Luke Ingle, Scarborough - 8 lb 11½ oz
After the 63 successful anglers received their prize giving, there was the ‘Lucky Ticket’ draw for those who did not weigh-in followed by a well presented raffle table generously supported by WSAA members.
Many thanks from WSAA to the 152 anglers who supported the event and hopefully we will see you all next year.

The Superpool is £2 from each ticket, Dave Perrett suggested putting this up to £3 per ticket, and therefore increase ticket price to £15 in light of the £1,000 First Place prize - carried unanimously.
After the poster design was confirmed, members moved onto the ticket fronts.

Mike Saunders volunteered to oversee the food, as it was reported some did not get any last year, as others had had more than one bowl of stew. He would also look after the prize table as it was being set up by Dave Perrett.
Parking was again raised, but seeing how this was out of our control, anglers would need to park on the other side of the river and walk across the swing bridge.
After a few other ideas re weigh-in, were discussed, it was agreed the weigh-in would take place in the Fleece garage as normal.
Fish will be cut on the back of the head once presented to the weigh-masters.
Jason Ebison or William Atkinson to oversee the end of the weigh-in queue once 17.00hs nears.
