With a west by north westerly swell running, anglers started fishing an hour into a low water flood match. A few members managed to land fish in the first hour then the weather conditions changed as sleet and snow along with strong winds in open places spoiled the night. The fish were taking bites of gully worm, peelers and mussel, the best fish of the night of 4 lb falling to John Butler.

The light north westerly swell had fallen as the wind changed to south westerly, giving calm conditions and a very little movement. Anglers fished a ‘top of the tide match’ which took most of them to cliff top marks.

Andy owes win to friendly advice
Last Sunday saw Arundales sponsored Cloughton Shore Open.
One hundred and twenty-one competitors decided the first place bounty of £250 was well worth a crack at. By the end of the event the majority of anglers were left fishless and pondering over thoughts of what might have been. In fact, out of the 121 who participated, only 15 brought fish to the scales. Not only was the sea exceptionally calm for this tie of year but in addition the water was very clear. However, there has got to be a winner and on this occasion it was Andy Barnby with a cod of 6 lb 05 oz 02 drms. Andy's success had a lot to do with his fishing partner Andrew Crowe who took him to the winning location. Even so, well done Andy, you have stil got to catch the fish. Second, claiming a cheque for £100 was Mick Williams with a fish 5 lb 02 oz 02 drms. Third was Steve Coverdale with a cod 4 lb 07 oz 11 drms. On the competition scene, toningt sees the third of the winter league matches. All teams will be anxious to sign off 1996 with good weights. |
On Sunday the Flask Inn Open will take place which has been organised to raise funds for the Whitby RNLI.
To conclude, I would like to thank Mark Cullen, landlord of the Red Lion, Cloughton, for the hot refreshments he organised. I'm sure they were greatly appreciated by everyone who fished last Sunday. Paul Medd |

Double bonanza of codling for Mick
Just over a fortnight ago Scarborough angler Mick Chadwick helped himself to an angler's bonanza of fish, not only once, but twice.
On the first occassion he took 11 codling for 25 lb 08 oz 00 drm. The second session saw an almost identical return, 11 fish 25 lb 10 oz 00 drm. Mick took his fish froma mark north of Scarborough. Last weekend saw the Flask Inn-sponsored open shore competition. Conditions for the event presented anglers with a moderate sea state. This put plenty of colour in the water, especially at some of the marks around the Whitby area. The first prize of £200 for the angler with the heaviest single fish went to Filey's Chris Scaife with a cod weighing 9 lb 08 oz 00 drm. Chris took his match-winning cod froma location north of Whitby. Second, claiming a cheque for £100, was Scarborough angler Stevie Hirstle with a single cod of 8 lb 05 oz 00 drm. Steve is certainly making a name for himself this winter with specimen cod. Third was Pete Bayes with a cod of 8 lb 04 oz 00 drm for a prize of £50. Heaviest single bag of the day went to Steve I'Anson who had five fish for an aggregate weight of 19 lb 04 oz 00 drm. The junior prize was shared between N Westgarth and P Kilpatrick with 1 lb 05 oz 00 drm. Ninety-four competitiors took part weighing-in 203 lb 01 oz 00 drm of fish. The event raised £665 for the RNLI in Whitby. |
With regard to this, I thank all of you who took part. Thanks also go to Ian Hudson for organising the event and the Flask Inn for providiong pie & peas. Wettest angler of the day was myself. After seeing Steve I'Anson land his first fish, a little too much over exuberance saw me sample the feeling of the winter North Sea. This put paid to my event somewhat prematurely. At least I gave the anglers around me something of a spectacle and good laugh. Paul Medd |

Whitby reel in the trophy victory
The inter-club Bell Trophy, which is fished between the boundaries of Coble landing, Filey and Argyle Gulley, Hayburn Whyke, was the highlight of the weekend.
With the conditions remaining more akin to those associated with the height of summer, anglers must have feared a very lean day in terms of fish potential. With 97 anglers representing their respective clubs, 17 fish were recorded at the weigh-in. In first place were the big fish experts of Whitby. As a team they recorded three fish for a total 0f 10 lb 10 oz 00 drms. When taking into consideration their members who blanked, the average weight for the team 11 oz 05 drms. For their success Whitby had to thank Denis Thompson, who contributed an individual total weight of 9 lb 01 oz 12 drms. Second came the team from Filey who managed only a single fish of 6 lb 06 oz 00 drms. This gave them an average weight for the team 10 oz 03 drms. The angler solely responsible for their success was Frank Colling. Filey boat recorded a solitary fish weighing 4 lb 09 oz 04 drms. This gave them an average 8 oz 02 drms. |
Fourth were Rock Anglers who managed three fish for a total of 4 lb 15 oz 12 drms, averaging 7 oz 15 drms for the team.
Denis Thompson and Frank Colling, as most successful individuals on the day, claimed about £100 each. Paul Medd |

Gale force winds have kept catches low for February with anglers endeavouring to find a mark where they could cast to reach the fish.
Last night saw the wind easing but long distance swell was heavy and running in on an ebbing tide causing problems. William Atkinson showed fellow club anglers on the west pier his skill in finding fish.

Whitby Sea Anglers Association biggest fish of the season tipped the scales at 20 lb 06 oz and was caught by the clubs secretary Bernard Vasey of Eskdale Road, Whitby.
Bernard’s fish was taken from Whitby’s extension pier, on a calm night from a 5.9 metre ebbing tide when on his last cast of the nights session he hooked into the fish which took a cocktail of peeler and fresh lugworm.
Having reeled in the fish to the side of the pier, the problem was getting it out with no drop net. The fish was manoeuvred to a ladder not far away where he went down and plucked it out by the gills.
Bernard has hooked into two other big fish through the club years but lost them both due to fishing from high cliff marks, his previous best fish of 10 lb 04 oz was from the same mark in 1990 which won him the clubs singles knockout.

Whitby Sea Anglers Association's biggest fish of the season tipped the scales on Wednesday night last week at 20 lb 06 oz. The cod was caught by the club's secretary Bernard Vasey of Eskdale Road, Whitby, who works at Europower (Hydraulics).
Vasey's fish was taken from Whitby's extension pier, on a calm night from a 5.9 metre ebbing tide when on his last cast of the night's session hooked into the fish which took a cocktail bait of peeler and fresh lugworm. Having reeled the fish into the side of the pier, the problem was getting it out with no drop-net. The fish was manoeuvred to a ladder not far away where he went down and plucked it out by the gills. He has hooked into two other big fish through the club years but lost them due to fishing from high cliff marks. His previous best fish of 10 lb 04 oz was from the same mark in 1990 which won him the singles knock-out. In second place in the club competition was Paul Kilpatrick with three fish 5 lb 09 oz, two fish Ian Russell 3 lb 03 oz, Neil Inglis 1 lb 13 oz (1), Philip Kilpatrick Jnr 1 lb 12 oz (leading the junior section), Andy Craing 1 lb 12 oz, Adrian Smith 1 lb 09 oz, George Middlemas 1 lb 04 oz, Brian Harland 1 lb 02 oz. With a little north/westerly swell running for Sunday's match most club members took to the scars to fisha slow flooding 4.5 metre tide but results were poor as only seven fish were weighed-in. |
This time on his first two casts Bernard Vasey won the session with two fish for 3 lb 14 oz, second Andy Craig 2 lb 14 oz (1), Mathew Atkinson Jnr 2 lb 03 oz (1) (second in the junior section), Neil Inglis 1 lb 01 oz, Dave Perrett 1 lb 00 oz.
There are now only four match sessions left to complete the club's 1996-97 season and the anglers season's totals are close in the top five placings. |

A light northerly swell put colour back in the water and produced 23 fish to the scales, which was an excellent result for this time of season. Denis Thompson won the session with 5 fish for 10 lb 06 oz, and Bernard Vasey was also kept busy, having to settle for second with 5 fish for 9 lb 08 oz.
This was a low water match and members had to leave their marks (Time Up) just when the fish were appearing.
