November 1996
Sunday 3rd November 1996.
The conditions were poor on Sunday for the annual Whitby Sea Anglers Association Open Match Competition which was sponsored by the Pier Inn Hotel, Whitby and Keith’s Sports of Saltburn.
The south westerly winds which had been here most of the week increased in strength and a lot of the exposed marks could not be fished.
There was still a good turn out with 165 anglers fishing in the boundaries from Skinningrove Beck to the Coble Landing, Filey. They were determined to find fish on a slow ebbing tide but results were low as only 19 anglers weighed in with 33 codling for a total of 73 lb 03 oz .
Our 1st prize of £300 was presented to a local angler from Sandsend, (Nr Whitby) Dave Cass, who had the heaviest bag of codling with 2 fish for 9 lb 13 oz.
2nd prize of £150 went to Darlington angler Bernard Westgarth with 2 fish for 8 lb 10 oz.

Whitby Sea Anglers Association biggest fish of the season tipped the scales at 20 lb 06 oz and was caught by the clubs secretary Bernard Vasey of Eskdale Road, Whitby.
Bernard’s fish was taken from Whitby’s extension pier, on a calm night from a 5.9 metre ebbing tide when on his last cast of the nights session he hooked into the fish which took a cocktail of peeler and fresh lugworm.
Having reeled in the fish to the side of the pier, the problem was getting it out with no drop net. The fish was manoeuvred to a ladder not far away where he went down and plucked it out by the gills.
Bernard has hooked into two other big fish through the club years but lost them both due to fishing from high cliff marks, his previous best fish of 10 lb 04 oz was from the same mark in 1990 which won him the clubs singles knockout.
