After the meal WSAA Secretary Peter Horbury summarised the season and members achievements.

There were 2 domino cards to draw

Good evening all and a warm welcome to our guests.

Nice to see you all and thank you for attending.

This is our 68th Annual Presentation.

Total weight for the season - 1,732 lb 12 oz, from 24 members, with anywhere from 7 to 12 members fishing the later stages of the season.

This total weigh-in is down on last year by 600 lb from 29 members.

The availability of green crab was down due to the dredging of the River Tees could explain why membership was down to a level not seen since the years 2007-2012.

Total fish numbers were down by nye on by 750 fish, the scarcity of whitings, last season 580 whitings were weighed-in, this season just 2 by Brian Harland.

Over the season there were 12 different members who won HBoFish and 14 different members who won HFish.

11 members won both HBoFish & HFish together on the same night,

Dave Hambley 10 times,
Davey Turnbull 7 times,
Ryan Collinson & Brian Harland 4 times,
Dave Perrett, Denis Thompson twice,
Bernard Vasey, Dave Ward, Steve Ingleston, Paul Short and myself [Peter Horbury] once each.

Monthly Sweeps - the old adage ‘You have to be in in, to win it’.  Both were well supported, 14 for HBoFish, and 15 for HFish, all 12 prizes were shared amongst 6 members only.

Start of the season September 2022

Season opener Wed 28th - And last year’s Champion Dave Hambley weighs-in the only DFigure bag 10 lb 05 oz (6)
We welcomed 3 new members, Ryan Collinson, Lewis Plews (Jnr) and Lewis Wright.

October 2022 belonged to Dave Hambley 63 lb 06 oz from 27 fish.

Match 2 and both Dave Hambley & Ryan Collinson DFigure bags 19 lb 13 oz and 10 lb 15 oz respectfully.
Dave Hambley set the bar HFish 5 lb 04 oz.
Match 3 and Brian Harland gets his first win & DFigure bag 10 lb 13 oz
Match 4 and the topic of conversation was the World Cup Final would clash with our Christmas match Sun 18th December, 8th Jan was decided on.
Match 5 and Dave Perrett shocks everyone with a 17 lb 04 oz DFigure ‘Mary Poppins’ bag, as the fish just kept coming out.
Match 7 - 19th and it was ‘a fish a cast’ from Ryan 24 lb 13 oz (15) and he reported dropping 2 off!
The Dave’s of Turnbull, Hambley, and Perrett also had DFigure bags for the first 100lb+ weigh-in.  Best Fish Dave Hambley 5 lb 12 oz.

November 2022 belonged to Brian Harland - 50 lb 12 oz from 26 fish.

Match 11 severe weather warnings, and the texts just kept coming ‘Not fishing’ only 7 fished.
Match 12 Sun 6th Bernard Vasey won his first and only match 13 lb
With Brian Harland 2nd with the other DFigure bag 12 lb.

Match 13 Wed 13th Denis Thompson wins with a pollock of 4 lb 12 oz.
Again the revised date for the Christmas match clashed with the Amble Open - put back a week to Sun 15th Jan 2023.
Match 14 Sun 13th Dave Ward only DFigure bag 10 lb included a pollock 3 lb 10 oz and a 5 lb codling.
Sat 19th Dave Ward reported catching a 7 lb 11 oz spragg but had not had it weighed for the HFish Out of Competition.
Match 17 Wed 23rd Brian Harland with his 2nd HBoFish 20 lb
HFish Davey Turnbull by 1 oz over Brian 4 lb 15½ oz part of a 16 lb bag.
Match 18 Sun 27th our Open match - 82 seniors, inc one lady & 3 juniors fished.
The pub was overrun with revellers who disrupted the presentation, consequently anglers found it hard to hear the prize giving.
Many thanks to all our sponsors.
Ex member Danny Middlemas won, with Paul Short 2nd and Neil Eglon 3rd.
Lewis Plews came 2nd in the Juniors.
Last match of Nov Wed 30th and Dave Hambley is first to the 100 lb Club

December 2022 belonged to Davey Turnbull - 65 lb from 20 fish.

Match 20 Sun 4th Ryan & Brian join Dave in the 100 lb Club as they and Lewis Plews (Jnr) weigh-in 3 DFigure bags.
Tales of woe on that night:-
Denis Thompson snaps end eye, Dave Perrett fallen over bag, bait and rig wallet nowhere to be seen and Neil Eglon non-match-entry.
The non-match entry rule to some, normally the offenders is ‘a silly rule’.
You may not be the first, nor will you be the last.
However, as pointed out, you cannot win the Lotto if you forget to buy a ticket.
This gave rise to the birth of a new web page - Non Match Entry, also tabled are those who missed out on the Monthly Sweeps by not believing in themselves.
Turnbullator - I’m back Wed 7th Artic winds named the troll from Trondheim weighed-in 26 lb 06 oz inc HFish 7 lb 10½ oz [both trophy winners], and Jonny Watson 10 lb 02 oz the only DFigure bags.
Match 22 Sun 11th and the artic conditions continue with ice reported forming on rods.
Match 23 Wed 14th - Quote ‘The coldest conditions I’ve ever fished in’ Ryan Collinson who for the first time this season was ‘an ounce short of a ‘double-figure bag’.
Match 24 Sun 18th should have been our Christmas match. Dave Ward & Davey Turnbull DFigure bags.  Davey now standing 2nd to Brian only 4 lb 08 oz adrift, has got the bit firmly between the teeth.
Match 25 Wed 21st Davey Turnbull is back Christmas No.1 6 lb 02 oz inc. a fat codling 5 lb 09 oz, as Brian blanks.

Christmas break

Dave Ward Tues 27th Dec Redcar & Cleveland Sea Anglers HFish 4 lb 13½ oz entered for the WSAA
David ‘Sten’ Sandsend Memorial Trophy.
Fri 30th David won Cloughton Rocks Festive Sweepstake HBoFish match 10 lb 15 oz.

January 2023 belonged to Davey Turnbull 27 lb 05 oz from 8 fish.

Match 27 Sun 8th Low pressure flat sea state Dave Hambley shocks everyone with a 6 lb 03 oz codling and another for 8 lb 09 oz and regains No.1 on the Leader Board.
Christmas match and hospitality at The Grosvenor, many thanks to Ryan’s parents.
Davey Turnbull wins with a clean sweep 18 lb 05 oz - inc. HF 6 lb 02½ oz and regains No.1 spot from Dave Hambley.
It was all getting very cat & mouse stuff at the top of the Leader board.
Keeley Fairbanks came 7th and Lewis Plews (Jnr) came 2nd overall, with a Personal best codling 5 lb 04 oz.
Match 30 Wed 18th and Brian Harland begins his fight back.
Match 32 Wed 25th and Dave Hambley, always the joker has ‘just the one!!’ a 7 lb 08 oz spragg in his bag but we all missed the Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF.
Last match of January and Davey Turnbull’s Average fish is 3 lb 00 oz for the season, however he needs to remind himself there are possibly ‘two cut off points’.

February 2023 belonged to Ryan Collinson 33 lb from 18 fish.

Match 34 Wed 1st Paul Short has packed 3 head torches having been lent one the previous match by myself.
Match 35 Sun 5th and Bernard Vasey after a long absence is back at the scales although not fit enough to fish.
The Snow Moon and Dave Hambley is stalling at the scales until, from his own ‘Mary Poppins’ bag pulls a 5 lb 11 oz codling as he jostles for No.1 from Davey Turnbull now only 1 lb 06 oz ahead.
Match 37 Secretary’s Challenge Trophy and Whitby wins thanks to Ryan, Brian, Dave Ward and Paul Short.  Brian now tops the leader board.
Who can forget Match 38 Wed 15th when yours truly was the only member to weigh-in, a rockling of 4 oz - to be in contention for the wooden spoon - the lightest fish to win heaviest fish of the night, my only ‘double win’.
Match 39 Sun 19th and Ryan is now closing the gap for 3rd place from Dave Hambley with a ‘DFigure bag 13 lb 06 oz.
Match 41 Sun 26th Bell Trophy day and Davey Turnbull saves WSAA from last place as Cloughton retain the Sana bell.
Although in front of some ‘top rods’ Davey did drop a big fish!!
A very poor turn out for us, just 7 fished.

March 2023 belonged to Brian Harland 34 lb 05 oz from 18 fish.

Match 43 Sun 5th the Worm Moon Brian and Davey Turnbull are still exchanging blows but Brian has it with a 10 lb lead.
Although Davey has a new job as an anglers clothing designer, the Sainsbury’s bag for life with head and arm holes cut out, having left his coat at home.
Match 45 Sun 12th for the second time Steve Ingleston pulls off the win 13 lb 11 oz (5) as Davey Turnball joins him 12 lb 10 oz for the only 2 DFigure bags, reducing the gap to Brian to only 3 oz.
At this point both Brian and Davey have a 4 lb 06 oz match Av/weigh-in.
Match 46 Wed 15th Davey Turnbull, 6 lb 01 oz extends his lead, and is also first to the 200 lb Club.
Match 47 Sun 19th Brian Harland & Davey Turnbull were neck & neck for the championship, and every weigh-in counted.
Brian had weighed-in 15 lb 00 oz as we all waited for Davey to return with a weigh-in, but alas he did not.
Brian regained No.1 spot, joined the 200 lb Club, the only DFigure bag, and Dave Hambley nibbled away at Ryan’s lead in 3rd place.
Match 48 Wed 22nd Brian & Ryan share the honours, Brian extends his lead on Davey as Ryan closes on Davey.
Match 49 Sun 26th Ryan blanks, Dave Hambley regains 3rd with a 7 lb 13 oz bag.  Brian wins the Sunday League.
Last match of the Season Wed 29th and for the 2nd time this season ‘one ounce short Ryan’ is the talk as his misses out on joint 3rd place by one ounce despite taking Man of the Match and Hfish of the night.
Ryan may rue Sun 30th Oct when he fell foul of non-match entry and lost a 2 lb 01 oz, weigh-in or that shopping trip to Edinburgh?  But on the positive side, match fishing has been a learning curve and he has done remarkably well.

Right moving on to the Trophy awards.
