Rob Allison, Denis Thompson & Paul Short discus the answers to the fun quiz.

After an excellent meal & superb hospitality WSAA Secretary Peter Horbury summarised the season and members achievements.

There were two domino cards to draw & Bernard Vasey asked Colin Stainthorpe to start the draw and pulled the first domino, won by Rich Cope.  Colin joked, to Rich, as he drew next domino, "pick mine" and promptly did.  Secretary Peter Horbury gave the answers to the mini quiz he had organised.  The special question was won by Dave Johnson, and nearest thereafter was Mrs Perrett.  The winner received a bottle of wine, and the runner up a ½ bottle.

Tonight is the 60th Annual Presentation evening for Whitby Sea Anglers Association.

Start of the season October 2014

Well done to Matthew on winning for a fourth season in a row, but the season did not start well for Matthew, his brother Paul had switched the bait freezer off to cut the lawn and forgot to re-plug it afterwards, so all inside was lost.
First match and we welcomed a Junior - Chris McCarthy and maybe he wondered what he had signed up for as Mick Beedle casts the top section of his rod off the east pier.  Ben Laws hooked a 5 lb pollock then promptly lost it in the aqua pods on Marine Drive, Scarborough.
I won the first match and from then on it was all downhill.
2nd match & Rich ‘Deadly Fish’ Deadman weighs the first double figure bag.  October was really Colin’s month 59 lb, a 17 lb lead over Matthew & 20 lb to Dave Perrett.
Colin had four of the ten double figure bags. 16 lb 09 oz, 10 lb 06 oz, 15 lb 02 oz, 12 lb 03 oz, and HF sweep 7 lb 06 oz. Matthew HBoF 22 lb 02 oz.

November 2014

Matthew pulls all the stops out and claims November for himself with a narrow lead of less than 7 lb to Cassy.
Although it wasn't until Match 11 that Matthew clawed his way to the top of the leader board as he refound his form with 9 codlings for the months & seasons HBoF 27 lb 08 oz.
WSAA annual Open was won by member Rob Allison, 7 codlings for 19 lb 00 oz, and Denis Thompson weighed the 2nd HF, pipped by Mick Chadwick by 7 oz in the Super pool.
102 anglers took part and of them 29 seniors and 2 juniors weighed in 91 assorted fish for 198 lb 00 oz.
Rob Allison was 2nd in the Mick Hillaby memorial Trophy.
6th Nov and James ‘King Cod’ weighs the first HF out of Comp 5 lb 14½ oz only for Bernard to better it 3 weeks later on Friday 28th  6 lb 06 oz.
30th Nov Andrew Cass weighs 3 codlings for 21 lb 05 oz inc. HF 11 lb 12½ oz.
19 double figure bags

December 2014

First match of December and Dave Perrett wins his first match 4 codlings for 10 lb 02 oz.
Wed 10th Dec and Matthew lands the HF of the month 6 lb 10 oz
Christmas Match kindly sponsored by Paula & Malcolm, (presented with a bottle gift) Jamsy thought match started at 3pm and was won by Matthew 4 codlings, a rockling for 13 lb 00 oz, Colin HF 5 lb 00½ oz.
By the end of the month Matthew only had a 17 lb lead over Cassy and the maximum gap between anyone of the top ten was only 12 lb with the majority under 10 lb.
Singles KO final and Dave beats Ben.
Doubles Rich Cope & Mike Bowman beat Matthew & myself.
8 double figure bags

January 2015

Back fishing in the New Year was a marathon for some of us, the Station Inn Open (9 members managed a weigh-in) and an evening match, both Matthew & Rob double figure bags.  Rob is now 2nd on the leader board.
Sunday 11th Jan Whitley Bay Open and Ben was 5th and the evening match had high expectations.  29 codlings for 96 lb, 4 double figure bags and I weigh the HF of the month 7 lb 08 oz as a better stamp of fish was weighed, 9 fish over 4 lb.
Mon 19th Jan & Paul is out pleasure fishing and weighs the HF out of Competition 8 lb 15 oz.
Come the last match of the month and Cassy pips me to HF with an excellent fish of 10 lb 14 oz as snowflakes the size of saucers fell on a very uncomfortable night.  That was the night Dave missed the weigh-in with a single codling.  Did that fish weigh more than 1 lb 10 oz and cost Dave 7th place to Rich?
8 double figure bags.

February 2015

1st Feb and a Personal Best for Ben and HF of the season 14 lb 07½ oz, total bag of 18 lb 10 oz.  February was Ben’s month with 71 lb 05 oz as he weighed-in (3 double figure bags) with Colin a distant 2nd with 33 lb 05 oz.
2nd Feb and Whitby B team are crowned Yorkshire Fours Champions* (Team B were quick to point out that had not, as yet, received their winners prize money/trophy). Under the leadership of Ben (Capt.), Rich, Cassy and Matthew beat a team from Scarborough Rock Anglers.  Well done to you all.
Bell Trophy Sun 8th Feb fishing two teams we managed 4th & 5th overall as Filey C won.  Last time we won was in 2010.
Wed 11th Feb & Ben surprised everyone with 14 lb 04 oz bag of 18 whitings, closing the gap to 3 lb on 4th place Cassy.

March 2015

March was Paul Kilpatrick’s month but it wasn't easy for him as Rich and Paul Short took turns to lead, Paul, boosted by a 16 lb 07 oz bag, the only one for March (inc HF 5 lb 12 oz) on 22nd Mar, a night when he snapped his rod and had to borrow one to keep fishing.
March was not without incident, Rich came face to face with an angry seal whilst rock hoping back to the scales from Spenner's, Dave & Mick left a drop net on the aqua pods, Marine Drive, making them too late for the weigh-in, Bernard walks all the way to the bottom of the RHB slipway then realises he’s left his head torch in the car and fishes with his spare.  Dave complains of discomfort in his shoe at the weigh-in and empties 3 size 1 hooks onto the tarmac.

So conclusion - All in all the season has been good even though the weather was against us on more than one occasion.
852 Cod
133 rocklings
112 Whitings
28 Billets
26 Flat Fish
14 Poutings
8 Wrasse
5 Pollock
1 LSD
& 1 Eel
Totaling 1,181 fish for 2,266 lb 09 oz not as good as last year but the best in over 12 years.

Many thanks to all members for your input, photographs and tales.
Thanks to Bernard & James for their work at the Open & weigh-ins.
Many thanks to Dave for the book work and keeping everyone in order.  Dave replied and thanked Peter Horbury for the secretarial work and running the web site.  Appreciated & thank you.

24 - Memorable Moment

Most Memorable Moment, there were many to choose from but having discussed the candidates with Dave Hambley we agreed there could only be one winner.  It wasn't hard as this member is renowned for it, and on this night he fished as usual but didn’t heed the weather warnings and dismissed the falling snow as nothing to worry about.
What he hadn't factored in was the other road users driving so slowly and he missed the weigh-in.  With a 2 lb fish in his bag he said to me “hopefully this will not cost me a place at the end of the season?”
In fact it has cost him a place, being 1 lb 10 oz behind Rich Cope.
So Last Cast Dave or Last to the scales Dave is this years recipient of the Memorable Moment trophy.  Well done Dave.

25 - After a memorable and enjoyable evening it was, as is the norm, left to Chairman William Atkinson to make his customary summation, thanking everyone.  He rounded off by presenting James Gilpin, Dave Perrett & Peter Horbury with bottle gifts for their work in ensuring the smooth running of WSAA - Thank you.
