The 3rd match of the season was fished by Whitby Sea Anglers Association members under rough conditions from a north by north easterly swell, this was a high water to ebb match taking anglers to their cliff marks along the coast. A few of the marks failed to produce fish as they were reluctant to swim close to shore due to the loose weed washing around in the swell. Denis Thompson showed his form and managed to catch 7 fish with his first good bag of the season for 17 lb 06 oz.

The four hour match for Whitby Sea Anglers Association members was a flooding tide to high water, fishing a slight north westerly swell the rain managed to stay away and the strong wind through the day eased as the night went on. This was another night when a variety of fish were weighed in due to the sea conditions and lack of colour in the water. A quantity of rocklings, billets, dabs and the first 2 bass were on the scales. Also the heaviest fish to date for October 5 lb 07 oz landed by Dave Perrett.

Once again very wintery conditions returned for the weekend as a north westerly sea swell brought with it gales and heavy rain for Whitby Sea Anglers Association members. A high water competition although it was a dry day there was still a strong wind presence and catches were lower than expected as only 8 anglers returned with a total of 17 fish. Two double figure bags, the low catches could be due to the long distance swell surges which fish do not seem to like.

Whitby Sea Anglers Association members had a poor catch in the competition as only 3 fish were weighed in, this was due to strong gales from the west which had flattened the sea and this was due to strong gales from the west which had flattened the sea and anglers struggled to find a sheltered mark to fish out of the wind.
The crabs were the only sea creatures that were active as many hooks came back with only the cotton left on.

Saturday 31st October - Glenn Kilpatrick 9 lb cod, pleasure fishing, sets target for Heaviest Fish Out of Competition.
Sun 1st Nov - 10 of 51
A north westerly sea swell returned for the weekend and on Saturday night Glenn Kilpatrick landed a 9 lb cod which was weighed in at Rods and Reels tackle shop to set the target for the heaviest fish out of a club match.
The swell had grown for the evenings Whitby Sea Anglers Association match and anglers were able to go onto the scars to fish the runs on an ebbing tide on a full moon lit night. There was a great improvement from Wednesday’s match as 24 anglers weighed in a total of 61 fish with the better fish beginning to show in three to five pound range. Once again Denis Thompson was on form as he produced 9 fish to win the match and take the heaviest bag of the season to 29 lb 05 oz.

The sea conditions were much improved for the Whitby Sea Anglers Association 4 hrs evening match as a north westerly rough swell returned and put colour back into the water which brought the fish closer to shore and anglers were able to fish the runs on the scars from a low water to flooding tide. Once again good fish of three to four pounds were on the scales with the best fish of the night falling to Dave Perrett 8 lb 04 oz, which also won him the heaviest fish of the month competition on the last day.
Junior angler Richard Parkin (Jnr) also had a good night as he returned to the scales with 3 fish for 8 lb 14 oz, putting him in 4th place for the nights positions.

First Saltburn Sea Anglers Open
First Saltburn Sea Anglers Open
High-flier Crowe in dominant form
More than 200 anglers, both local and from further afield, were competing in the first Saltburn Sea Anglers open last Sunday.
Although conditions were calm, a big tide provided anglers with a certain amount of enthusiasm. In first place, and almost totally dominating the day's proceedings, Andy Crowe with three fish weighing 10 lb 03 oz 08 drms. This included the heaviest single fish of the day, a cod weighing just over 7 lb. Incl;uding the Superpool and the fact that Crowe and Mick Ellis won the doubles, Andy took home a massive financial of about £800. In second was myself [Paul Medd] with two fish for 8 lb 05 oz 06 drms, including a second position in both the Superpool and team event accompanied by Andrew Woodall, I managed to take home £300. In third position was Darlington angler Steve Coverdale with two fish for 8 lb 05 oz 04 drms. In total Steve took home a respectable £170. |
As with the Red Lion event, this was an excellent match which was well organised and backed by impressive cash and other prizes.
Speaking to match organiser Bernhard Westgarth, it appears almost certain that the match will run again next year. |

Following Wednesdays match the weather front had changed as the wind had got round to the north west and produced gales and rough seas for the rest of the week. It looked as though Sunday nights 4 hr match there would be plenty of fish, but they were still not showing even with a north westerly swell. Fishing a flooding tide there were still some marks that could not be fished due to strong winds and rough sea swells and the results were poor as there were only 6 fish on the scales from 5 anglers.

Despite the blustery and very wet conditions the Whitby Sea Anglers Association club match went ahead as normal. With a growing north westerly running swell the sea state was very rough which brought in loose weed to shore and spoilt some fishing marks. It was a high tide into ebbing tide match and the water a chocolate brown, in colour due to rain washing mud from cliffs, fish were scarce with only 5 anglers returning with fish.

A change in the sea swell to the very rare south easterly and frosty conditions failed to produce the quantity of fish which usually favour some of the fishing marks for this time of year.
The fish caught in the mid week match were of good size with William Atkinson winning with 2 fish for 11 lb 04 oz, one of 7 lb 04 oz, his best this season. Mathew Atkinson (Jnr) taking second.

There was a taste of spring in the Whitby Sea Anglers Association 4 hr match as the weather was warm, sunny and dry with a little sea swell. The fish were hard to find with anglers moving around on the scars to try a mark that would produce a fish as the tide ebbed to a low water into a flooding tide. The total catch from 20 anglers was 4 codlings, 4 rocklings and a sand dab.

Whitby Sea Anglers Association fished a fast ebbing tide midweek, there was a slight sea swell but this dropped as the water rushed out leaving it calm with the tangle weeds swaying in the runs as it reached low water spring tide. This was another match with a poor result with only 2 fish weighed in.

Although the sea conditions were rough for the evenings competition and with another high tide, heavy rain with a strong northerly wind spoiled most marks. Deciding on a mark that could be fished in comfort was impossible but Neil Inglis managed to pull 4 fish out and win the match with 10 lb 13 oz, he also reported losing a good fish in the swell.
