62nd Annual
|
The Stables, Whitby
Saturday afternoon Dave Perrett, Bernard Vasey & Peter Horbury set up the tiered table of trophies as they do every year.
Members and their guests
Tonight is our 62nd Annual Presentation evening, thank you for coming and I trust everyone enjoyed their meal.
Many thanks to the staff at The Stables
To summarise the season:-
Thirty four members enrolled this season, and throughout we did not have fewer than 15 members fishing.
The majority of matches had 20 or more members fishing, and if the Clubman Series had been running WSAA could have done well with all the double points for 20 or more fishing.
Sadly the Clubman Series run by Sea Angler did not have a sponsor.
Don’t think I have ever seen the top spot change so often during such a closely fished season, comradery was at its best throughout, and the weigh-ins well attended by all because of the close fishing.
We had storms Stella, Doris, Angus, and a tidal storm surge, as well as totally unseasonally mild weather.
September 2016
Just the one match, and ‘déjà vu’ for Bernard.
8 lb bag (4) 3 codlings & a rockling
inc HFish 4 lb 10 oz, winning as he had last season.

Sixteen members entered both the Singles & Doubles Knockouts.
Matty was an early contender for HFish out of Competition, when on Fri 7th he caught an 8 lb 07 oz cod.
However one week later, after the evening match Sun 16th & Mike lands the HFish of the season 9 lb 05 oz.
Wed 12th saw the Coastguard approach 2 members whilst fishing on or around the South Batts area after a member of the public had raised concerns over lights seen on the shoreline.
On the same night Stuart locked Brian & himself out of his van.
All in all, just 7 double figure bags weighed-in.
November
Was Denis’ month 26 fish 83 lb 02 oz
27 lb 05 oz more than Brian Harland.

Many thanks also to Malcolm Scallion, Bass Boots & the other sponsors.
Denis was first to pass the 100 lb marker on Sun 20th when he weighed (5) 19 lb 09 oz on a night of 4 double figure bags from Danny, Brian & Chris for the Junior HBoFish trophy smashing the record
previously held by Matthew Atkinson from the 1997-1998 Season.
Wed 23rd & Matty was next to pass the 100 lb marker.
Sun 27th and no less than 6 double figure bags Brian 27 lb, Colin 20 lb, Bernard 14 lb, Matty 13 lb, Rob & Denis 10 lb.

with 6 whitings & a dab, on a night when there were no codlings weighed-in.
92nd Bell Trophy Sun 19th won by Cloughton Rock Anglers, and we were just one of four local teams that failed to weigh-in.
Just 4 double figure bags.
February
Brian takes his turn 25 fish 25 lb 08 oz, 4 lb 06 oz ahead of Matty Lamb.
Wed 1st - Steven Swales HBoFish 10 lb 01 oz,
same night Matty HFish 5 lb 10 oz

Jason is making a remarkable recovery from his strokes whilst in Turkey. As mentioned a fine spragg back in January 7 lb 10½ oz - More on that one later.
New members “the brothers Swales” need to change their names, causing too much confusion at the scales and in the ledger.
Both have done remarkable well in their first season, and hopefully they will achieve more in the future.
Both Chris & Luke become seniors next season, both have come on well especially Chris finishing 14th overall has shown he can mix it with the seniors.
Most consistent angler was Matty Lamb with 35 weigh-ins.
All members are to be thanked for their input, photographs and tales.
Thanks to Dave, Bernard & James for their work, at the Open & weigh-ins (and of course their banter).
Many thanks, again to Dave for the book work and keeping everyone in order.

Secretary Peter Horbury then continued with the final two trophy nominations.
Most Improved Angler - Donated by Rob Allison & Dave Hambley
This is determined by WSAA Members each voting for their choice.
In 3rd Place Matty Lamb
In 2nd Place Dave Ward
In 1st Place Danny Middlemas
Danny Middlemas had good teachers with Jimmy & George Middlemas, and hasn’t forgotten what they taught him.
Memorable Moment - Donated by Rob Allison & Dave Hambley
Throughout the season there have been many tit bits & these included....
Van keys left inside a locked vehicle, or left in a scooters ignition whilst in the pub.
Cars left unlocked, scales & weigh pan left in car park to bait bucket & scissors left at home.
Driving in slippers or driving into ditches requiring a friendly tow out.
Going for an early bath, when falling into a whirlpool, missing the weigh-in due to traffic
in-sufficient match entries, not entering the Monthly Sweeps.
Abandoning tripods so as to scale a clay cliff, visits from the HM Coastguard
leaving car parts at the road side, and going back for them after the weigh-in, tripods left leaning against a car (at the start of a match)
leaving lamp batteries in the van, to forgetting to fill in the Open ticket with your name.
Forgetting hooks, money for a refreshment, worms left at home.
Casting a rod tip light into the sea all very amusing but who picks up the trophy this year?
You will be pleased to know the Most Memorable Moment trophy does not go to Dave Perrett this season!
Congratulations go to Stuart Swales, for locking your van keys in the van.
I will say Good night, tight lines & see you all at the AGM Wed 30th August.

Bernard Vasey
I (Bernard Vasey) remember when I joined Whitby Sea Anglers club in 1988-89 season, Patrick Hoy was the man who lured me into the club, Ian Russell was the Secretary at the time and gave me a membership card with the club rules and all the cups that were there to won.
I have not any records of where I was positioned in the season 1988-89. But the following season Ian printed a result sheet and I managed to come 9th Place with 44 fish 89 lb 06 oz
Paul Kilpatrick was in 1st Place 99 fish 201 lb 14 oz
Paul Kilpatrick Heaviest Fish of the season 16 lb 12 oz
John Messenger Heaviest Fish out of a club night 13 lb 00 oz
I won the individual Knockout, it was fished over two matches then. I was fishing against Paul Kilpatrick, in one match I caught a 10 lb 06 oz codon the east pier. Which helped me win the trophy.
Bob Eglon had a 14 lb cod which helped him win the Christmas match.
And Peter Horbury won the Bridlington Open and the Cloughton Open heaviest fish match in December and a month later won the William Youngers Open at Scarborough with a 10 lb 08 oz cod.
Unfortunately there are NO PHOTOGRAPHS (as far as I know) of their achievements, which is sad for the MEMORABILIA TO ANY OF THESE ANGLERS.
BUT NOW we have a website and thanks to Peter Horbury who takes the photos of all match catches there is a record of how Whitby Sea Anglers Association operated.
And I am one of the 'weigh-masters', this is why I would like to give a memento to THREE anglers for the 2016 - 2017 season. Two new members and one who fished in previous years.
The first photo I would like to present to Jason Ebison.
An angler who under no circumstances was his health condition going to stop him doing the thing he liked best, as we all do. GO FISHING ON THE SHORE. In his determination one night it paid off, a personal best cod of 7 lb 10½ oz was reeled in, it was also the best fish of the night, and taking second place overall.
"JUST A ROCKLING Bernard" he said as he slid a fine spragg onto the scales from his fish bag, wow.
WELL DONE JASON all the best for 2017 - 2018 season.
The second photo I would like to present to Danny Middlemas.
Danny's father Jimmy also fished in the club around the same time I joined.
Dany started off fishing on his own, riding to fishing marks on his scooter. Then Brian Harland took him under his wing. His fishing improved learning new marks even though Brian still kept getting the best fish. On the 20th November Danny managed to catch three cod for 11 lb 13 oz, one a personal best of 7 lb 13 oz. AS the photograph shows, he was over the moon to weigh his fish in.
As you know Danny took 10th place this season. 90 fish 83 lb 07 oz
KEEP IT UP - WELL DONE
The third photo would like to present to STEVEN SWALES
Who has also enjoyed his first season fishing the club. He managed to be placed 19th with his catch of 41 fish for 45 lb.
On the 11th December 2016 he rturned to the scales with a cod of 9 lb 09½ oz. The best fish of the night and the heaviest bag to win the match. It also became the heaviest fish of the month for December.
I hope you will keep this photograph and add to it NEXT SEASON.
Well done to you all and I hope I will be weighing in more personal best fish in the 2017 -2018 Season.
