Secretary’s Challenge Trophy day - Whitby Sea Anglers were hosts to Cloughton Rocks, fishing from 10.00-16.00hrs within the boundaries of Cowbar Steel to RHBay Landing Scaur. The weigh-in, 16.00-16.45hrs, followed by hospitality and presentation would be at The Wilson Arms, Sneaton.
Team work, the winning team would the one with the best aggregate weight.
Looking at the weather forecasts it would be a scratching match for the 22 anglers, 12 representing Cloughton Rocks and 10 from Whitby Sea Anglers. SSEasterly winds 5-13mph, minimal cloud cover gave unwanted bright sunshine as the water was clear bar a slight milkiness. Sea state virtually flat, ⅓rd foot Northerly swell.
Low water 10.45hrs, 1.65 metres the ebb was larger than forecast, nearer a 1.0 metre giving better access to tangle beds and gullies. A bonus, the flood was late turning giving another ½hr fishing the harder ground before being pushed back.

An hours fishing at one mark, no fish, move to another, and repeat. Once the flood was in its full stride, the swells increased to 2ft however it was too little too late. An undersized bullhead was the highlight of the 6hrs fishing for me.
At the scales Bernard Vasey had kindly volunteered to oversee proceedings for the successful participants. Three codlings and two billets from 5 of the 22 fishing.
The prize fund Clubs £50 each, and £5 from each angler £210 total, giving £105 split 50/30/20% each for HBoFish & HFish 1st/2nd/3rd . Davey Turnbull, Simon Barker & Freddie Barker took 1st/2nd/3rd in both HBoFish & HFish.
Overall results:- 5 fish - 8 lb 06 oz (Av 1 lb 11 oz)
