44th Annual Open

Collinson victorious
Low water 13.54 hrs, 2.4m, 999 mbar, 10°C, TR 2.7m
Whitby Sea Anglers Assoc. held its annual one day Open match on Sunday with a top First Place prize of £500 sponsored by Wilf Noble Plant Hire & Construction, Ruswarp.
Eighty nine seniors & 5 juniors fished from 10.00 - 16.00hrs between the boundaries of Skinningrove Beck to Coble Landing, Filey. The sea state was less than favourable for the 6hr match, flat calm save possibly 1ft SEasterly at best. Water coloured varied from thick to crystal clear.
The day started bright with a mackerel sky, a strengthening off the land SWesterly wind [gusting 30mph], with rain forecast for later in the afternoon. Fishing the ebb to low water 13.54hrs [Whitby] the scaurs soon opened up for anglers to venture out and fish the tangle beds and gulleys. The tide turned quickly and what swell was evident was soon lost in the flood. 14.00hrs and the darkening skies soon became inclement with rain showers and drizzle for the rest of the day. For some it was a bite less match but Ryan Collinson, RHB, reported it was a fish on both his first two casts.
Late afternoon weigh-masters Bernard Vasey & Jason Ebison had set up the prize & raffle prize tables in Whitby Rifle Club before setting up a gazebo, under which to carry out the all-important weigh-in [16.00 - 16.45hrs] aided by WSAA Chairman William Atkinson.
The winner of the 44th Annual Open was WSAA Member Ryan Collinson 11 lb 15½ oz (5), and winner of the First Place prize £500 sponsored by Wilf Nobles Plant Hire & Construction, Ruswarp. Ryan also picked up 2nd Heaviest Fish in the Superpool 4 lb 14 oz.
Of the 94 competitors 28 weighed-in - 161 lb 04 oz - Av Fish - 2 lb 02 oz from 77 assorted fish
43 codlings, 13 wrasse, 11 billets, 4 pollock, 3 flat fish, 3 bleggs, & 1 haddock
