Members
Dave Hambley Colin Stainthorpe Steve Ingleston Danny Middlemas Andy Neasham Paul Neasham Mike Vickers Denis Thompson John Watson |
Treasurer Dave Perrett had collected members subscriptions as they arrived.
Chairman William Atkinson opened the meeting 19.45hrs, and reminded everyone not to talk amongst themselves once the meeting starts.
The meeting was then started by Secretary Peter Horbury asking for the ‘minutes of the last AGM’ to be confirmed as true [as they had been posted on the website the day after the meeting took place].
Proposed Richard Deadman, seconded William Atkinson - Carried.
1 - Chairman’s report - William Atkinson
William reported he had missed the last AGM held at Whitby Community College, having sent his apologies, due to the Covid pandemic.
He reminded everyone that the weigh-masters word was final, and would be backed by the Committee if dirty or undersized fish were presented at the scales.
William was thanked for his report.
2 - Secretary’s report - Peter Horbury
Many thanks to all for attending, and again, thank you to those who came to the presentation evening. Photographs of the evening were posted on the web site the following day.
There is a lot to discuss, so please just one addressing the floor at a time, and please no private conversations across the floor.
As in previous seasons if we could have a photograph every match as it would be appreciated, and anyone can have a photo taken. Just as Bernard, I can’t guarantee being first to the weigh-in so if you have a nice fish or a good bag please wait before gutting.
I messaged Paul Hogarth [farmer] Goldsborough, earlier in the day, and he has nothing to report re parking.
Also spoke to Adrian Colling, Filey he informed me:-
A - The John Smiths Open is Sun 7th November 2021 [WSAA Open would follow two weeks later, Sun 21st November 2021]
B - Filey Festival 6 matches for shore anglers, weigh-in at Filey sports Assoc. Clarence Drive.
C - Jamie Richardson memorial Open, Sunday 23rd January 2022 with a £2k prize fund.
To be honest I do not have a lot to report, there is an Order of Business provided.
Any Other Business - in no particular order, comments, remarks, and observations made by members for discussion.
Thank you.
Peter was thanked for his report.
3 - Treasurer’s report - Dave Perrett
Treasurer Dave Perrett gave his report which as we all expected had been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Match entry, scratch card, Open raffle and sponsorship revenues were all down, but the Club still had the normal costs, including £100 for hire of Dunsley Hall Oak room for the presentation.
Consequently last years prize funds had obviously been smaller and the club had had to pay out for the Sunday League top three as there was no longer any sponsorship from Hook, Line & Sinker.
There were no questions.
Dave was thanked for his report.
4 - Re-election of officials -
Peter Horbury asked William Atkinson if there would be any problem with Vice Presidents - Wilf Noble & Dave Cass - William did not see a problem.
Club President - William Atkinson, Chairman - proposed Steve Ingleston, seconded Peter Horbury - Carried
Treasurer Dave Perrett - Proposed James Moore, seconded Bernard Vasey - Carried
Secretary Peter Horbury - proposed William Atkinson, seconded James Moore - Carried
5 - The Committee 2020 - 2021
William Atkinson - Honorary Chairman & President
Dave Perrett - Treasurer Honorary
Peter Horbury - Secretary
Bernard Vasey - Weigh Master [Out of retirement] Honorary
Paul Short
Jason Ebison - Knockouts
Richard Deadman
Dave Ward
James Moore
Bernard Vasey confirmed he had resumed weigh-master duties. Peter Horbury reminded the meeting that the first member(s) back to the weigh station were to get the scales out, and not wait nor rely on Bernard nor Peter to do so. And Bernard was reminded he too could fish until 22.00hrs, and did not have to stop fishing at 21.30hrs in order to have the weigh station ready for members at 22.00hrs.
Jason Ebison confirmed he would run the knockouts again.
No change to the Committee.
6 - Subscriptions - Seniors
Currently £25 [£5 includes insurance premium & £2 HF & HBoF of the Season mandatory]
Juniors - Currently 8.50
Peter Horbury asked Treasurer Dave Perrett if he had any views, or a wish for members to review these.
Dave had no comment, and these remain the same.
Steve Ingleston asked if Juniors could join for ‘free’.
Dave Perrett pointed out that Juniors do not pay for match entry, but could still win the prizes.
Steve was told that Members were not allowed to ‘take’ Juniors fishing, as this had to be done by a relative or guardian Rule 11.
7 - Club Matches - Currently Wed 19.00 - 22.00hrs & Sun 18.00 - 22.00hrs.
William Atkinson reported that this had been the case for over 60yrs, and saw no reason to change.
He recounted that when the Club first set up, members fished every 8 days, so if you started on a Sunday, the next match would have been the following Monday [and so on] - which as you can imagine got very confusing.
8 - Match entries - Currently £2.50
Again Peter Horbury asked Dave Perrett if he had any comment or concerns over revenue/income.
Dave had none, but said now was a good time, and went on to read out how much each member still had ‘in-credit’ for match entries. He proposed that these be ‘rolled-on’ for the coming season, and if last years members do not return then their money would be refunded.
There were no further comments, and this was seconded by Richard Deadman - Carried
9 - Knockouts
To be considered - Last seasons Knockouts to run concurrently with this seasons. Dave Perrett has suggested the presentation for the conclusion of the 2019 - 2020 Knockouts be held at the Christmas Match.
Peter Horbury suggested that the unfished matches from last season, be fished on equivalent dates that they were due to be fished. Therefore tying them in with this seasons dates.
Peter pulled up the WSAA web site, and gave examples of how this would play out.
Questions were raised about ‘What happens if an old member does not re-join? Then their opponent gets a bye.
Work commitments etc, normal rules would apply Jason Ebison reminded members, as Steve Ingleston pointed out he was on a 3 week work cycle.
After much debate Peter’s proposal was seconded by Jason Ebison - Carried
10 - Open Match
Date, sponsors, & ticket sale outlets.
Now we know the date of the John Smiths Open the WSAA Open date was set at Sunday 21st November 2021.
Match times would be the same, as would the weigh-in times.
Sponsors were discussed, William Atkinson would confirm Wilf Nobles £500, and did not see any problems as James Noble had said yes previously.
James Moore had confirmed his £100, members thanked him.
Dave Ward was confident on getting £200, again members thanked him.
Dave Hambley offered £50 for 17th Place, to replace the sponsorship lost from Ben Laws, again members thanked him.
Richard Deadman offered £20 for the Heaviest Flat Fish, as no one knew if Mick Beedle would carry on, as he had done in previous years. Members thanked Richard.
Steve Ingleston offered £50 for the smallest codling to get more anglers back to the venue. There was much discussion, as both Bernard Vasey [weigh-master] and Dave Perrett pointed out that this would create untold work at the weigh-in, as every codling would need to be weighed, and recorded. Steve was also told that we already had a prize for Last Place. Steve then offered the £50 for 34th Place, and was thanked by members.
Junior sponsors, again members stepped up to the plate:-
Danny Middlemas, Peter Horbury, Bernard Vasey, Dave Ward and Colin Stainthorpe offered £20 each for a £100 prize fund.
Members raffle prizes - Peter asked for a co-ordinator, someone to collect and store these. In the past members took their prizes to Malcolm Pitman, Hook, Line & Sinker but he is neither a member nor a sponsor since the 2020 AGM.
Dave Perrett stated it would not be him, as he had enough to do re the prize table.
Bernard Vasey said he would take charge, and members would bring their prizes to the match weigh-ins prior to the Open.
Ticket sales, it was debated whether or not Hook, Line & Sinker would be prepared to sell our Open tickets.
Members asked how we had lost their sponsorship, Dave Perrett explained, and informed the meeting that we were not the only ones to lose sponsorship, as Whitby Chartered Skippers Association had too.
Dave Perrett thought they would if he were to purchase vouchers, and prizes for the Open, both Dave Perrett and Richard Deadman would approach Malc & Paula.
Dave Perrett confirmed he would see Carla re holding the Open at the Fleece, and if she would continue to sponsor the event, and provide the catering.
There was much discussion as to whether or not it was time to find an alternative location, as Whitby was changing.
No longer a sleepy winter fishing town, but none stop tourism, and consequently parking in/on Church Street is a serious concern, especially with the new ‘turning-circle’ [the private car park near Grape Lane is now a roundabout, nee turning circle for busses. The lost parking spaces have been replaced by spaces from the ‘Pay & Display car park].
Dave Perrett pointed out that the Fleece had been our Open venue and sponsor for many a year, and saw no reason to change.
William Atkinson and Peter Horbury pointed out that when the ‘flood defence works’ were being built the car park was closed, and anglers parked on the other side of the river, and walked back to the Fleece.
An earlier than scheduled bar break was called by Secretary Peter Horbury.
11 - Christmas match
Peter Horbury told members the last Sunday before ‘Christmas Day’ was the 19th Dec 2021, confirmed as the date for the members Christmas match.
Stakesby Arms, Dave Perrett would approach the new owners, and get back with meal costs etc.
Fishing times, again much discussion, Steve Ingleston wanted to change the times 13.00-18.00hrs but it was pointed out others us the Stakesby Arms, and it was possible two events would overlap for the hosts.
Dave Perrett ask for confirmation from Secretary Peter Horbury, asking if we had changed the weigh-in time.
Peter confirmed that the allotted Open weigh-in time had been reduced, but the members Christmas match was still an hour 19.00-20.00hrs. Peter and Bernard informed the meeting that by 19.45hrs all members had weighed-in.
William Atkinson proposed that the weigh-in time be reduced by 15mins ie 19.00-19.45hrs, seconded Peter Horbury - Carried.
During discussion comment was made over the overall length of the evening being late. Richard Deadman asked if the meal could arrive at a set time, and for those that have gone home to change, drop their cars off at home, whatever, were the problem.
Dave Perrett pointed out, the meal [carvery] is not served until all members are present. Dave Perrett would enquire when he approaches the new owners for a booking.
Richard Deadman & Keeley Fairbanks were thanked for their £50 for Heaviest Fish re The Michael Deadman Memorial Trophy.
The Christmas match had been sponsored by Hook, Line & Sinker Dave Perrett informed the meeting.
Much discussion on how to fund the event, ‘do we revert back to the old system’ Heaviest Bag of Fish, and Heaviest Fish [and no one member can win both {unless only one fish is weighed-in}] asked Dave Hambley?
Mike Vickers asked Dave Perrett ‘how much was required?’
‘£100 for a £50, £30, £20 one, two, three.
Mike Vickers then informed members he would sponsor the members Christmas match, and gave Dave £100. Mike was thanked for his generous sponsorship.
Having gained the sponsorship Steve Ingleston then asked Dave Perrett ‘what happens to members match entry fees then?’
Dave told Steve if the match entry was say £10, then £7 may be req’d for the meal, and the rest would be spent on the prize table and raffle prizes. Reminding Steve that ‘no one went home empty handed at the Christmas match’. The names of those that do not weigh-in are placed in a hat and drawn for a pick of the table after others have had their prizes awarded.
Dave Perrett finished off by saying he would approach the Stakesby Arms and report back.

Any Other Business - always contentious
A - Monthly Sweeps
{not official WSAA Club business} - Heaviest Fish & Heaviest Bag of Fish - Peter Horbury currently has the ledger, a volunteer is req'd to run this [preferably a Committee member].
Danny Middlemas was asked by Peter Horbury if he would like to resume this duty.
Danny confirmed he would, but would not be messing with one month at a time - all-in 6 months up front [6 X £4 = £24].
He also confirmed he would resume scratch cards.
B - Weigh-in location
[currently Coates Marine car park] Do we return to the Fleece car park/parking capacity due to new bus turning circle - closure of the swing bridge to traffic?
As written above re Open match No.10, yes we would like to return to the Fleece.
Steve Ingleston suggested we switch venues, and use the Rifle Club, as he wished to be able to walk into a pub/bar after the weigh-in and not have to park up and walk back to the pub.
The socialising is part of the clubs heart and felt people would just go home after the weigh-in.
As above Dave Perrett would approach Carla but he felt that we will be more than welcome to resume the Fleece’s hospitality as before.
C - Parking
Gaining an unfair advantage ie West Pier lighthouse, Knipe Farm, Hawsker, East pier Henrietta St. turning area, Cowbar [Nr lifeboat Station/water treatment plant].
Peter Horbury explained that there had been grumblings over this issue of some members being able to fish longer because of where they had parked [permission or not].
For example - Redcar and Cleveland Council had tried to close [by means of a gate] access to Cowbar Lane at the layby just down the road from Boulby Mine because of parking complaints [2] from locals. This planning proposal had been defeated.
Hawsker Farm Peter told members he had had a message from the owners requesting no one parks there anymore [only those with permission] as during Covid anglers had been turning up in the early hours to go fishing.
Much discussion followed, eventually Steve Ingleston proposed that parking was left to the individual, and to park with respect inc. the Highway Code, and to have respect for farmers as it was not the Clubs responsibility.
Seconded Dave Ward - Carried.
D - Steve Ingleston wanted to discuss Fish sizes and no photographs of members holding ‘Hands of Mops’ as he had read too many defamatory remarks about ‘these photographs’ on Facebook.
Steve went on to inform the meeting of various fish sizes implemented by other local clubs, including whiting sizes altering within a club depending on age! Dave Perrett was all for this ageism.
This discussion got very heated, but the point was made that WSAA cod size 35cm ‘is the legal size’.
Peter Horbury asked if he [Steve] had defended the Club in the Comments on Facebook, and pointed out that photographs are posted in the web site gallery, with a link from Facebook to the gallery, and very few photographs go directly to Facebook.
Peter confirmed he too is sick of Facebook, and would prefer it if it was done away with, and just use the web site. The trolls & keyboard warriors would need to skip between Facebook, the web site, and back to Facebook to comment.
William Atkinson said just don’t read their comments.
James Moore confirmed fish sizes were legal, whiting size was longer than the legal size, and we are a ‘match fishing club’. “What do they expect?”
Denis Thompson pointed out that the total weight of fish [WSAA ungutted] is extremely small compared to total landed by the fishing industry.
Andy Nesham made a point, to have an anonymous vote on paper as some maybe too shy to put their hand up for a particular size. Agreed.
Richard Deadman issued every member with a piece of paper, and members wrote down their preferred cod size.
The papers were collected and given to Secretary Peter Horbury.
The result was announced - 1 for 60cm, 3 for 40cm, 3 for 36cm, and 9 for 35cm - carried - see #Opinion
E - Jason took the floor and informed the members, with examples of hoodies.
Members examined the goods with approval and future orders were promised.
Jason sort approval to continue - approved.
F - Again Jason addressed the meeting re the ‘No practice cast rule’.
After examples given, and reasoning [William Atkinson, Dave Perrett & Dave Hambley] as to why it was brought in [some anglers caught with lines in the water before time] his proposal was seconded by Bernard Vasey - Carried.
G - Steve Ingleston asked for a day match a month.
Both Dave Perrett & Peter Horbury pointed out that we already have this, WSAA Open, Christmas match, Secretary’s Challenge Trophy and the Bell Trophy as examples.
No interest for change.
H - Jason Ebison asked if there would be any interest [and he was prepared to organise] a summer match down on the beaches. All in, all out, catch & release match, mini bus and make a day of it.
Dave Perret asked if it would be held ‘as and when’ the smooth hounds were fishing - yes.
Jason got the approval he was after, and would report back.
I - Dave Perrett addressed the meeting re members failing to ‘text-in’ as required.
Certain members [named] were very lax to inform the Committee as to whether or not they had/had not fished, and were safe at home.
Richard Deadman supported Dave and said he was to be strict and assume members have fished as written up in the rules.
It was reiterated by Peter Horbury, it is the members responsibility to text-in if going home, and not to ask others to pass messages on. As in the past, those others have themselves gone home, and no messages forwarded to the Committee at the weigh-in. And then members start texting/ringing them to confirm they are safe.
J - Dave Perrett and Peter Horbury confirmed that the first match of the season would resume with the meeting at the Bandstand, Pier Road, Whitby with the customary group photograph.
A reminder to those who cannot make this due to work commitments, they cannot start fishing until 19.30hrs.
Many thanks to all [mentioned above] for attending the meeting which closed 22.20hrs
Tight lines, Peter.

Many thanks to all [mentioned above] for attending the meeting which closed 22.20hrs

#Opinion - re fish sizes - it is my opinion WSAA missed a chance to voluntarily increase the minimum codling size,
my choice was for 36cm.
my choice was for 36cm.
