16 seniors & 1 Junior fished an all ebb match in, at times, very inclement weather conditions.  Damp 20-30mph NWesterly winds, 2 metre NWesterly swell with colour.  Conditions looked ideal for a fish or two but for some the fish just were not there, literally no bites!  The wind did not let up during the 3hr match, at 20.30hrs a squall blew in off the sea, for 20 mins there was torrential rain.  Some members reported lots of weed in the surf at the start of the match.

The weigh-in was delayed as the scales were moved & set up in the Fleece yard due to heavy rainfall.  Once set up Peter Horbury oversaw the weigh-in of 29 assorted fish - 25 codlings, 3 r’lings, & 1 flounder.  Last year’s champion Dave Hambley, Staithes, in his title defence won both Man of the Match, & HFish - 3 lb 08½ oz. Dave weighed-in 6 codlings for the only ‘double figure bag’ of the night 10 lb 05 oz.

WSAA welcomes 3 new members, Ryan Collinson, RHB, Lewis Plews (Jnr), RHB and Lewis Wright, Whitby, all three got themselves off to a good start with a weigh-in.  From his bag of 4 fish Ryan weighed-in a codling of 3 lb 05 oz, and was 3rd overall - 6 lb 09 oz - well done.

Reminder - October - Monthly Sweeps start, and you have to be in it to win it.  Entry is strictly payment in advance for the full six months £12 HBoFish & £12 HFish - Total £24 in a named sealed envelope to Peter Horbury.

First Sunday match started in daylight.  Conditions were far from ideal, near flat sea state, little to no colour, and a strong Westerly, gusting, 20mph.  Commitment to fish was down with just 14 members fishing the 4hr match 18.00 - 22.00hrs.  Fishing an all flood tide to HWater 21.17hrs.

Piers were very popular, fish bites for many were non-existent, baits were coming back intact, not even any crab life to pick off baits.  With crystal clear skies, a small crescent moon, there was plenty of time for star gazing.

At the scales Peter Horbury oversaw the weigh-in 14 codlings, 6 rocklings, 3 billets and an eel.  Man of the Match Dave Hambley, again, with both HFish 5 lb 04 oz, and HBoFish 9 lb 07½ oz (4).  Dave has set the bar for the Monthly Sweeps.  Ryan Collinson, RHB, had the second best fish 3 lb 01 oz, and stands second on the Leader Board.

Sunday 9th Oct the Knockouts will be drawn, registration with Jason Ebison ASAP.

Low water 19.30 hrs, 2.54 metres, 1009 mbar, 9°C, TR 2.2m

The evening’s 3hr match started in daylight, fishing the last of the ebb and 2½hrs of flood on a slack tide [Tidal Range 2.2m].  Very strong westerly 20-30mph winds.  Sea state flat with no colour, the catch forecast was extremely low, reflected with only 13 members fishing.  Sofa Hole a strong draw.

Clear skies, the aurora alerts pinged ‘amber’ on the phone, but nothing visible with the naked eye.  A few shooting stars to avert the eye from a motionless rod tip - it was a long night.  Baits came back untouched, no crab activity, lead loses were high, end tackle dragged into snags by the relentless wind.

At the scales, just 7 members recorded a meagre weigh-in of 20 assorted fish, 13 codlings, 2 billets and 5 rocklings, 25 lb 11 oz.  Man of the Match Brian Harland, Whitby, ‘double figure bag’ 10 lb 13 oz [42% of the total catch].  HFish 2 lb 10 oz fell to Colin Stainthorpe, Whitby.  Brian tops the Leader Board, albeit by only 12 oz as Dave Hambley fails to weigh-in.

Sunday night Knockout draws.

Before the match had started Peter Horbury retrieved a ‘fish measure’ from under the east pier extension believed to belong to Paul Short [mislaid on Sunday].  This was confirmed upon Paul’s arrival however by 21.00hrs Paul had lost it again - in the sea!

Low water 22.45 hrs, 1.23 metres, 1007 mbar, 13°C, TR 4.4

Low pressure, a gusting SSEasterly [20-30+mph] wind, near flat sea state with no colour for Sunday nights 4hr match.  Low water was not until 22.45hrs, therefore the 14 members had a choice to fish the cliffs/piers for a couple of hours, then drive to LWater marks mid-match as access to the scaurs opened up.

A fresh cliff fall at Robin Hoods Bay was witnessed around 19.00hrs last light, a ½hr after the ‘blood moon’ rose above the horizon.  Heavy cloud cover blew in thereafter, the forecast of rain held off until after the weigh-in.  The close to shore SSEasterly swell fell away as quickly as the ebbing tide, as did the enthusiasm!

Some members recounted the pain of constantly catching nothing but undersized fish, and the amount of precious bait used.  Whilst others did not have a bite all night, with baits coming back untouched - no critter activity.

Eight of the 14 returned to the scales, 11 codlings, 2 billets, 1 LSD, 1 rockling, and a flounder.  Last to the scales, Man of the Match, Dave Hambley, Staithes, 3 codlings for 8 lb 14 oz, his best 4 lb 03 oz took HFish of the night.  Next best fish, a lesser spotted dog fish [LSD] 2 lb 01 oz Dave Ward, Guisborough.

After the weigh-in Jason Ebison & Rich Deadman did the Knockout draws, overseen by Secretary Peter Horbury.  The preliminary rounds will be fished this Wed 12th Oct.

Jason Ebison brought it to member’s attention World Cup Final is Sun 18th Dec, clashing with the Xmas match.  Telling members the pubs will be very busy & may not be willing nor able to cater a Xmas carvery/meal.  Also the 3rd place game will be on Sat 17th Dec.  With 5 committee members present it was decided to move the Christmas match into the New Year, Sun 8th Jan ’23, fishing 2-7pm.

It is stressed members must acknowledge their intention to fish, so a venue can be found and numbers for catering ASAP to avoid disappointment.

Perrett shock weigh-in
Long distance Northerly swell 1½ft with little colour for the 3hr evening match.  SWesterly winds 14-21mph brought constant drizzle and a heavy rain shower at 21.00hrs, an unpleasant night.    Fishing up and over the top of the tide members reported little to no bites until the ebb took hold.  Cliffs and piers were popular with a few travelling with little to no success further afield.

First to the scales Dylan Goldsmith, Whitby, set the bar, his best codling 3 lb 11 oz, a bag of 5 lb 08 oz thereafter no one could match.  A pleasant surprise & all smiles on his first match of the season Davey Turnbull, Darlington, slid his only fish in the weigh-pan 4 lb 00½ oz [for HFish having pipped Dylan].

And members waited for Dave Perrett to return [always last!]

Dave Perrett made two attempts to find his best fish [a Mary Poppins bag] - first - 4 lb 00 oz and second - 4 lb 02 oz, pipping Davey Turnbull by 1½ oz for HFish of the night.  Thereafter Dave dug another 6 codlings and a rockling out of his bag for the only ‘double-figure’ weigh-in - 17 lb 03½ oz.  A remarkable achievement on such a poor night.

Dave has jumped from 7th to 3rd on the Leader Board.

High water 20.54 hrs, 4.61 metres, 1010 mbar, 9°C, TR 2.2m

The queue of low pressure systems coming across the north atlantic seems endless.  Light, but cold SEasterly winds grew in strength throughout the 4hr evening match.  Fishing 3hrs of flood over the top of a neap tide, tidal range only 2.2 metres.  Catch forecast was extremely low for the fourteen members fishing.  Sea state flat, crystal clear, on the sheltered scaurs 1ft of NWesterly swell was evident.

Again piers, and cliffs were popular, with some travelling further afield and sacrificing fishing time in the hope of a weigh-in.  Baits were coming back untouched, doesn’t appear to be any crabs to drag end tackle into snags.  Sea scorpions, and undersized billets were caught in the first hour as darkness fell.  Heavy cloud cover so no star gazing to pass the time!

At the scales Peter Horbury oversaw the weigh-in 14 codlings, 3 billets, 1 pouting/blegg, 1 pollock and a flounder 1 lb 04 oz.  Colin Stainthorpe, Whitby, landed both the pollock & flounder having forgotten his head torch at the start of the match.

Man of the Match, Denis Thompson, Lythe, with both HBoFish & HFish, 2 lb 14 oz - his first wins of the season.  Denis also had another codling 2 lb 10½ oz.

Low water 18.32 hrs, 2.9 metres, 1022 mbar, 11°C, TR 1.3m

The afternoons are now closing in, the fishing started in darkness which helped as the water was crystal clear.  The flood had only just started to push on by 19.00hrs, the close to shore 2ft NNEasterly swell slowly grew as gulleys filled-in.  The wind however was wick, ESEasterly gusting 30mph, full cloud cover, a dry night, and lightning flashes visible Tess-side way.

A neap tide, just 1.3 metres tidal range, unable to reach tangle beds, 17 members & 1 junior were spread far and wide with very mixed results.  The wind was the biggest factor to try and overcome.  Bows in the line, like sails, picked up fresh bladder rack as they fell into in the surf, and the gusts masked bites.

Many thanks to the lads who set up the scales ready for the first committee member back to start a book.  Rich Deadman oversaw the weigh-in - 61 codlings and a rockling for the season’s best tally 110 lb 10 oz.  Three double-figure bags, Man of the Match Ryan Collinson, Robinhoods Bay, 15 codlings - 24 lb 13 oz.  Some achievement on a Wednesday night, reported ‘my best session 18 casts, 15 fish & dropped 2 off’.  Well done from all.

Some better fish showing, Lewis Wright, Whitby, 4 lb 10 oz, pipped by Davey Turnbull, Darlington, 5 lb 02 oz, also pipped by Dave Hambley, Staithes taking HFish of the night 5 lb 12 oz.  Both Ryan & Dave lead the Monthly Sweeps.

In the Knockouts:

Dave Perrett beat Bernard Vasey, Brian Harland beat Peter Horbury, Dave Hambley beat Jason Ebison, and Dave ward beat Colin Stainthorpe.

Perrett dashes Goldsmith’s hopes

High water 17.26 hrs, 5.84 metres, 1011 mbar, 13°C, TR 4.5 m

Strong, warm, 13°C SSWesterly winds masked the 1ft long distance Northerly sea state until the land mass gave shelter.  Thirteen fishing an all ebb match, with no colour - the catch forecast was low, cliffs & piers were popular.  Clear skies and no moonlight [for howl at the moon day] plenty of time [again] for star gazing or watching the RNLI on practice manoeuvres.
Brian Harland, ever the showman, entertained the tourists by landing a codling first cast.  Peaked too early, not another bite all night.  Baits were coming back untouched, no crab life to drag end tackle into snags.  Mid match the evening went very still, the wind eased for nearly an hour.

At the scales Peter Horbury oversaw the weigh-in, 21 codlings, 7 rocklings, & 2 bleggs.  Dylan Goldsmith, Whitby, took an early lead, and was hopeful of a double win with his ‘double-figure bag’ 4 codlings 10 lb 09 oz, his best 3 lb 14 oz.  Davey Turnbull, Darlington, came close, with his best fish 3 lb 11 oz, to spoiling half of Dylan’s evening.

No surprise, last to the scales Dave Perrett, Whitby, dashed Dylan’s hopes completely with his ‘double figure bag’.  Dave pulled his best fat codling out & slid it in the pan - 5 lb 01 oz, adding another 4 codlings, and a rockling 11 lb 01½ oz for his 3rd Man of the Match and second HFish win.  Dave reported catching his best fish on the first cast of the evening.  Sorry, not your night but don’t give up Dylan.

Doubles Knockouts semi-finals:

Paul Short & Dave Perrett - 15 lb 04 oz (11) beat
Jon Watson & Bernard Vasey - 0 lb 00 oz (0)

Brian Harland & Colin Stainthorpe - 4 lb 07 oz (3) beat
Dave Ward & Jason Ebison - 2 lb 12 oz (2)

High water  19.09hrs, 5.36 metres, 1011 mbar, 11°C, TR 3.8m

Low pressure, anti-clockwise, continues to dominate the weather, unseasonally warm air dragged in off the continent meeting cold air creating heavy downpours.  Strong gusting SSWesterly winds 18-32mph, 11°C.  Numbers were down due to the Newbiggin Open earlier in the day, just twelve members fishing the evening’s 4hr match.  Flat, crystal clear sea state, catch forecast was low, fishing over the top of the tide from cliffs and piers, with some travelling in search of a fish.

Clear skies, no moonlight, plenty of time to point out the North Star from the Plough and admire the shooting stars.  It was a long 4hrs, small fish bites kept one alert, and baits came back intact, no crab activity?

Bernard Vasey had set the scales up in the Fleece yard, sheltering from the wind.  Just six* of the 12 had a very meagre weigh-in, 6 codlings, 1 rockling.  Man of the Match, Dave Hambley, Staithes HBoFish 4 lb 15 oz (2).  HFish fell to Ryan Collinson 2 lb 14½ oz.

However when Secretary Peter Horbury & Treasurer Dave Perrett did the paper work.  The first casualty of the old adage ‘you have to be in it to win it’, Ryan Collinson forfeits his weight due to none match entry.  Therefore HFish of the night fell to Dave Hambley 2 lb 10½ oz.  Hopeful a lesson learnt!

Severe weather warning!  Four low pressure systems to the west of Scotland, N Ireland and Wales, and the main one over N Scotland linked up with a high pressure over central Europe.  SSWesterly gusting 42mph, and heavy rain forecast.  Sea state as flat as a mirror, catch forecast, very low.  Text kept coming “Not fishing”, for those that remembered to do so, two fished by default.  So just 7 fishing an all flood match, it was a long match.

By match start the rain had eased, and the skies cleared but the wind was relentless until the last hour.  Putting the occasional log on the fire it was soon time to leave Sofa Hole and set up for the weigh-in.  Many thanks to the Fleece for the warm pumpkin soup.

Man of the Match Ryan Collinson, Robin Hoods Bay, 2 codlings, 1 rockling 3 lb 06 oz, including HFish 1 lb 08 oz.  In total 4 codlings and 3 rocklings graced the scales for 6 lb 15 oz.

More low pressure systems to follow with a light possibility of a northerly blow.

Dejá vu, SSWesterly winds, gusting 30mph brought heavy rainfall at the start of the 4hr evening match.  Text messages ‘not fishing’ received just in time, left just 10 members fishing.  Localised close to shore swell 1ft with plenty of colour gave early hope for a fish or two.

The rain was short lived, but by 20.30hrs the heavy cloud cover cleared, revealing an unwelcome bright near full moon.  Fishing the last 2¾hrs of ebb, noted did not ebb as forecast (low pressure), members were able to reach the thick tangle beds and gullies.

The strong winds masked fish bites, and with heavily bowed lines, end tackle was dragged into snags with heavy loses.  Rods kept low aided bite detection, but not too low for braid to snag on the rocky foreshore.  The wind did steadily ease throughout the match.  Jason Ebison kept ‘cracking-off’, and sort assistance to check the ceramic rings with a sharp knife, which did not reveal any cracked rings and was able to continue fishing without further hindrance.

At the scales Peter Horbury oversaw the weigh-in from only 5 successful members.  Two surprise double-figure bags, the first from Brian Harland, Whitby 11 lb 08 oz (8) 7 codlings, 1 r’ling who was pipped for Man of the Match by Bernard Vasey, Whitby 13 lb 01 oz (8) 7 codlings, 1 r’ling.  Bernard also took HFish of the night 3 lb 14 oz, beating Peter Horbury, Whitby 3 lb 02½ oz, who shared 3rd place with Colin Stainthorpe, Whitby.

Christmas match, pencilled in for Sun 8th Jan 2023 may have to be moved again, as it clashes with the Amble Open (depending on numbers thinking of fishing the Open).  Committee to meet after Wednesday evening’s weigh-in please.
Note - Wed 9th Singles Knockouts.

High water 16.24 hrs, 5.48 metres, 1008 mbar, 7°C, TR 4.2m

SWesterly winds forecast to hit 30+mph during Wednesday evening’s 3hr match.  Sea state flat with little to no colour.  Thin high level cloud cover thankfully masked a full moon within an hour of the start.  The only factor in the members favour was the Tidal Range (TR) 4.2m to tempt resident fish in to feed.  Again catch forecast was low, with no end in sight for the continuing train of low pressure systems and their SW/S/SEasterly winds, a Northerly blow is required to stir things up.

Fishing started 1½hrs after HWater, an all ebb match, unlike Sunday there would not be time to gain access to tangle beds or gullies until possibly the last hour.  To maximise fishing time piers were popular, whilst others travelled to more tidal marks, with very mixed results.  The wind strength eased for an hour, shifted WSWesterly, and tried to rain twice.

Of the 14, only 7 members had a weigh-in, 4 codlings, 1 pollock, 1 blegg & 2 rocklings.  Man of the Match Denis Thompson, Lythe, took both HBoFish and Hfish with a single pollock 4 lb 12 oz.  Secretary Peter Horbury, Whitby, second, had a 3 lb 02 oz codling in his bag (2) 4 lb 04 oz.

Singles Knockouts semi-finals:

Dave Perrett 1 lb 01 oz (1) beat Brian Harland 0 lb 00 oz (0)

David Ward 8 oz (1) beat Dave Hambley 4 oz (1)

Therefore Final - Dave Perrett - V - Dave Ward - Wed 30th Nov.

Many thanks to the Committee members attending after the weigh-in - It was agreed to put back the members Christmas match 1 week to Sunday 15th January 2023 due to a clash with the Amble Open 8th January.

High water 18.38 hrs, 5.21 metres, 1014 mbar, 10°C, TR 3.4 m

What a cracking summers day, only it is near mid-November, the unseasonal weather continues with everything looking very autumnal!  Low pressure systems continue to dominate, possibly for the longest time recorded.  Gentle SSEasterly wind, slight localised SSEasterly close to shore swell, crystal clear water, consequently, again, the catch forecast for the 4hr evening match was low.  Full cloud cover for the 12 members fishing the all ebb match, bar the first ½hr at top of tide. There was a slight chill in the air by match end 10°C.

Some members had fished the Filey Open so stayed south to maximise the fishing time with good results.  Locally head torches & rod tip lights could be seen all over.  Piers, Whitby prom, and cliff marks were popular with both members & clubmen from other clubs fishing 17.00-21.00hrs, and pleasure anglers, stopped for some fishing banter.

Remarkably on such a poor night, there was one ‘double-figure bag’ at the scales which pleased Bernard Vasey.  Personally I have never caught a pollock but listening to Dave Ward, Guisborough, recall how it nearly ripped his rod from his hands, it had tipped the scales at 3 lb 10 oz.  Dave went on to say he also weighed-in two codlings, and a rockling, his best codling 5 lb 01 oz for a surprising 10 lb 01 oz bag.

A well earnt Man of the Match, adding HFish, his first wins in-both this season, saying “it’s about time.”  His codling now leads in the Monthly Sweeps as Brian Harland’s HBoFish still leads 11 lb 08 oz (8) Sun 6th Nov.

Dave Perrett, Whitby reported being pestered all night with undersized fish, and then dropping a ‘donkey’ which he could not do anything with.

Doubles Final on Wednesday night.

Wednesday morning some welcome NEasterly swell 2ft, SEasterly winds 8-15mph.  Nineteen seniors & 1 junior fishing the all flood 3hr evening match to HWater.  Once the match started it soon became apparent the sea state had not only grown but was still growing and surging.  This caught out more than member, myself included, and we had to make the climb out of our chosen marks and quickly travel to a fishable mark.

Being the first sea for a ‘long time’ pleasure anglers had got to marks first, forcing some into Plan C.  On the west pier a holidaying group of ‘anglers’ from Kent had fully ensconced themselves.  Fishing 12hrs 12.00 - 00.00hrs, two beach shelter tents had been set up and nailed to the pier, selfishly blocking access to the Northerly edge (you had to see it to believe it).  They did not take kindly to those of us (locals) who wanted to gain access to the end.  Hopefully their detritus was cleaned up before they left, thankfully alcohol was not involved.

Looking to the east, the skies darkened, the ‘yellow warning’ weather front was moving in, the RNLI enjoying the swell for their evening’s training.  The wind started to increase, with strong gusts catching one unaware, at 21.00hrs the heavens opened as a squall hit town & icy cold rain fell.

First back, Bernard Vasey had set up the scales in the Fleece yard away from the inclement weather as the hot soup warmed inside.  Fourteen waited patiently for their turn to weigh-in.  The individual catches, as expected, low, due to the growing sea until that is Ryan Collinson arrived.  His best 6 lb 04½ oz, another 4 lb 13½ oz, and 3 more for Man of the Match 17 lb 02 oz (5).  Recounting how he’d dropped two, one a ‘much-better’ fish than his best.  Lewis Plews (Jnr) 3 lb 07 oz (1) - well done.

Doubles Knockout Final - Paul Short & Dave Perrett 5 lb 09 oz (3) crowned Champions, beating Brian Harland & Colin Stainthorpe 2 lb 05 oz (1)

Low water 19.30 hrs, 2.32 metres, 1005 mbar, 4°C, TR 2.9m

The sea state from Friday & Saturday had died off but it had done its job, stirred-up the sea bed & brought fish in to feed.  Social-media showed good bags & a few near double-figure fish from the NEast coastline.  The evening’s sea state NEasterly, close to shore swell 2-3ft (swell sets 8-10ft apart), thick with colour.  Fishing the last 1½hrs of ebb & 2½hrs of flood, TR 2.9 metres.

The WSWesterly wind 4°C 7-10mph was icy cold, the coldest evenings fishing this season, wind chill made prolonged baiting up painful.  Clear skies, ideal for star gazing, however the wind steadily increased in speed and the temperature dropped further, eventually making for a hard overnight frost (the first for 2022).

The high-water shoreline was littered with weed, ripped up in Friday’s seas, thankfully nothing in the surf.  Come low water the swell lost some of its impetus in the flood but soon caught up.  At the scales Jason Ebison had set-up & started a book, joined by Dave Perrett.  They recorded the season’s second best weigh-in 107 lb 63 fish - 47 codlings, 16 rocklings (the best was 111 lb - 62 fish Wed 19th Oct).  Remarkably six ‘double-figure bags’ recorded from 16 of 18 who fished.

Man of the Match (his second) Dave Ward, Guisborough, had been pleasure fishing on Saturday night - 7 lb 11 oz his best but could only record 3 lb 04½ oz from his 17 lb 03 oz (8) bag.  The evenings HFish fell to Colin Stainthorpe, Whitby - 5 lb 15½ oz Colin’s HFish second win.  Nice to see Rob Allison back at the scales, (with raffle Xmas cake) his first match this season.

Members Open raffle prizes to Bernard Vasey on Wednesday night please.

Low water 21.32 hrs, 1.51 metres, 990 mbar, 6°C, TR 4.2m

Sea state NEasterly swell 1-2ft thick with colour, and an ebbing tide to low water.  Seventeen seniors and 1 junior fishing the 3hr evening match gained access to tangle beds and gullies.  A pleasant surprise, it was not raining!  Clear skies, no moonlight, light SSWesterly breeze, made for a pleasant nights fishing.  Swells were regular, no surging, marks did not drain away too quickly therefore not pulling fish out into open water.

Paul Short got off to a bad start in the first 5 minutes, hook snood cut through (limpet/barnacle) first cast on retrieval of a fish, but still had 3 fish in his bag before 19.30hrs!!  Nothing I could do but watch, play gillie and lift his fish.  Paul’s £20 multiplier auction-buy not up to the job.  Then it went quiet, time for a move.

Again thanks to Dylan Goldsmith for setting up the scales.  Members were very slow to the scales due to the long walk back to their cars across the empty scaurs laden with fish.  Peter Horbury oversaw the weigh-in from 16 seniors & 1 junior recording the best weigh-in to date (just 1 blank).  54 codlings, 9 rocklings, 5 bleggs, 2 billets - 128 lb 03 oz with a better stamp of fish landed 3 & 4 lb’ers.

Man of the Match Brian Harland, Whitby, 20 lb 00 oz, (6) his best two codlings 4 lb 12½ oz & 4 lb 13 oz were pipped by Colin Stainthorpe, Whitby, 4 lb 14½ oz.  But there was still more in the queue to weigh-in, Davey Turnbull, Darlington, took HFish of the night by 1 oz @ 4 lb 15½ oz from his bag (2nd double-figure bag)  6 codlings.  Davey has the best Average Fish weight - 2 lb 12 oz.

Sunday WSAA’s 43rd Open Match fishing 10.00 - 16.00hrs weigh-in & food The Fleece, Church St. Whitby.  Tight lines to all.
Many thanks to those who have remembered their raffle prizes.

On Sunday Whitby Sea Anglers Association held its 43rd annual Open match, fishing from 10.00-16.00hrs.  The weigh-in, hot food, and prize presentation was held in the Fleece, Church Street, Whitby.  Many thanks to landlady Angela Fiori and her staff.

Conditions for the 6hr match were far from ideal, 1-2ft SSEasterly localised close to shore swell, with plenty of colour everywhere.  The SSWesterly wind however was not kind, cold wind chill, 10 gusting 20mph.  Overall a dull day, plenty of cloud cover.  Eighty two senior anglers, including one lady, and 3 juniors took part for the £600 1st place prize, in part, courtesy of Wilf Nobles Plant Hire & Construction, Ruswarp.

Fishing the last 2hrs of ebb, and 4hrs of flood, the tide turned very quickly, assisted by the wind, anglers soon had to retreat back up the scaurs as the swell gently grew.  Fish bites were timid, almost playful, one tap/pull and nothing more.
In the members Club match just 11 weighed-in.

Man of the Match Paul Short, Guisborough 6 mops did not have a single fish worth weighing.  The HFish was won by Neil Eglon 3 lb 09½ oz.  Lewis Wright was a close second 3 lb 05 oz.

Dave Hambley is the first to join the 100 lb Club.

Due to William Atkinson [recovering from pnuemonia] and Bernard Vasey [sciatica] being unfit to attend the weigh-in.
I personally stopped fishing at 3pm in order to be at the scales by 4pm [with Chris] to set-up the room, and start the weigh-in with Jason Ebison until relieved by Rich Deadman.

Hambley 100 lb Club
High water 21.05 hrs, 5.15 metres, 1028 mbar, 3°C, TR 2.7m

Last Sunday 27th, WSAA 43rd annual Open, Dave Hambley was the first to join the 100 lb Club.

Conditions for Wednesday evening’s 3hr match were far from favourable, this was reflected with only 11 fishing.  Sea state ENEasterly close to shore swell 1ft, with some colour.  A very cold Southerly breeze [a frost by morning], for the best part full cloud cover.  A red aurora alert was issued around 19.30hrs but there was no chance of witnessing any light show.

Fishing the last 2hrs of flood & an hour of ebb, local piers, cliffs and beaches were fished in search of anything for a weigh-in.  Dave Perrett & Dave Ward were competing for the Singles Knockout trophy.  Members spent the match watching a motionless rod tip, even bites were few & far between from undersized fish nee bait robbers.  And as yet no whitings on the local beaches which would have provided some entertainment!

The weigh-in [scales had been set up - see photo], 7 members were successful - 7 codlings, 2 billets, 2 flounders [returned alive], and a rockling graced the scales.  Man of the Match Dave Hambley, Staithes won both HBoFish 4 lb 06 oz (2), his 5th win, & HFish 3 lb 15½ oz, his 6th win.  Well done on such a hard night.

After the weigh-in members enjoyed pork pies and crisps, put on by landlady Angela Fiori - many thanks from all.

3rd win for Harland
There’s a saying ‘when the wind’s in the east, the fish bite the least’, consequently big Easterly seas 6-8ft are far from popular.  The swell sets were close together, no colour and surging dangerously.  “It was brutal”, quoted one member, and yet pleasure anglers were everywhere.  There is no shelter to be had from an Easterly, gusting 20mph+, which brought more than one icy cold rain squall to test the mind set of every angler, ‘is it really worth it?’  More than one said ‘no’ & turned in for an early bath.

Fishing the last 1½hrs of ebb, the easterly blew with the tide, creating a bigger ebb than tabled.  Once the tide turned it was straight back, pushing anglers back up the scaurs.  Some other Clubmen had fished 10.00-18.00hrs and had very little to show for their effort.  Marks that looked perfect, did not fish, whilst others, that looked too heavy, fished.  Jason Ebison, Whitby, did his best David Attenborough impression when an adult seal swam past him as he stood in the surf.

At the scales, the weigh-in overseen by Peter Horbury & Jason Ebison, three ‘double-figure bags’ Brian Harland, Whitby, Man of the Match 15 lb 14 oz (9).  Ryan Collinson, Robinhoods Bay 14 lb 12 oz (8), and a big well done to new member Lewis Plews, Robinhoods Bay 11 lb 14 oz (6).  Lewis is our only Junior member this season, and is mixing it well with the seniors, now lies 11th on the Leader Board.

HFish of the night fell to Denis Thompson, Lythe, 4 lb 03½ oz, there was another 4 lb’er which came from Lewis Plews (Jnr) 4 lb 00½ oz.  Nice to see some better fish showing, three 3 lb’ers came from Colin Stainthorpe 3 lb 06 oz, Ryan Collinson 3 lb 08½ oz & Brian Harland 3 lb 13½ oz.

Total catch 39 codlings, 5 rocklings, 1 billet.  13 fished + 1 Jnr

Brian & Denis have set the bar for Decembers Sweeps.

Tales of woe! 1) Denis Thompson reported snapping off his rods’ tip-eye.  2) Dave Perrett returned to his now ‘fallen-over bag’, leads & bait in the water & trace wallet nowhere to be seen. 3) Neil Eglon 6 lb 14 oz (4) forfeited his weight due to none match entry.  Like the lottery, you have to be in it, to win it!  Lesson learnt.

Low water 21.39 hrs, 1.5 metres, 10146 mbar, 0°C, TR 3.8m

Artic winds and a cold snap named the ‘Troll from Trondheim’, named after a city in central Norway.  Consequently the Northeast coastline was given a ‘yellow weather warning’, snow & sleet with temperatures expected to drop below 0°C.

For the 3hr evening match the NWesterly winds 18-24mph, 0°C with the wind chill felt like -4°C, definitely the coldest night to date.  Fishing the last 2½hrs of ebb, the long distance [polar] Northerly ground swell, thick with colour, 8-13ft was surging, as bays emptied and then flooded back.  One minute stood in ankle deep water, the next waist deep, Brian Harland reported having to bob-up & lift himself above the swell tops.

A full moon, the ‘cold moon’, shone brightly overhead - the name reflects the frigid conditions of December and the increasing grip of winter.  Conditions were far from ideal.  18.00hrs watching from high ground in the moonlight it was clear to see.  Regular swells were 100 metres apart [12secs], then after a while, each swell would have a second swell ridge right behind it, doubling-up is not indicative for good fishing but still marks were full of anglers.

At the scales, as expected members returned with meagre weigh-ins complaining of the surging, and weed.  Then a few members turned up with better than expected bags of fish.  Jonny Watson, Guisborough, was first with a ‘double-figure bag’.  10 lb 02 oz inc. a codling 4 lb 06½ oz.  Just as we thought everyone had weighed-in, Davey Turnbull, Darlington arrives, and the scales are switched back on.  Best fish first!!  7 lb 10½ oz, a spragg followed by 7 more for Man of the Match - 26 lb 05½ oz - Davey was complaining “I hadn’t had a bite in the last 1½ hrs”.

Davey leads in the Monthly Sweeps both HBoF & HF [yes he remembered to enter this season] but admitted driving straight home on Sunday with a 3 lb’er in the boot, ‘if weighed-in’ he’d now be in the 100lb Club!

Total catch 40 codlings, 5 rocklings, 45 fish, exactly the same as Sunday gone.

Davey Turnbull caught more fish in one 3hr match than I'caught all season!!

Harland tops Leader Board
PictureBrian Harland HFish 5 lb 11 oz
High water 1747 hrs, 5.28 metres, 1010 mbar, -2°C, TR 3.3m

The artic winds, nee the ‘Troll from Trondheim’, continues to dominate the weather, with no let-up in sight.  Northerly sea state continues, 4-7ft with plenty of colour.  A change in wind direction, Westerly, 6mph.  Late afternoon the coastline was shrouded in freezing fog, a real pea-souper, visibility down to 10yds.  The daytime temperatures never lifted above -2°C, wind chill made baiting up painful on the fingers, gloves a necessity.

During the day members had had the opportunity to fish the Cloughton Open, a HFish match, well done Dave Ward, Guisborough, 8th overall, a codling 4 lb 12½ oz [now leads HFish out of WSAA Match].  Consequently only 12 fished the Clubs evening match, of those 4 had fished the Open gluttons for punishment!

Once members got fishing it was quickly apparent the sea state was still surging in the all ebb match, which started 10mins after HWater.  Within an hour the moon broke through the fog giving members a better visual warning of the incoming swells.
Members admitted a lot of HWater marks were too heavy, but some members stayed in the hope the swell strength would dissipate on outer reefs in the ebb - it did not.  Those that made the early decision to move were rewarded.

Disappointingly the scales had not been set up by the first members back one a Committee member, ready for the evenings weigh-in, saying it was too cold to stand outside!  Peter Horbury & Rich Deadman oversaw the 31 codlings and 1 billet to grace the scales.  Four double-figure bags with a better stamp of fish showing, all fresh run, no stock red tangle fish.

Man of the Match Brian Harland, Whitby 18 lb 08 oz (9) also had the HFish 5 lb 11 oz.  Rob Taylor, Whitby, was one who moved, but not before he had a 10 lb bag (4) inc 3 lb 09 oz & 3 lb 10½ oz, as his first choice mark became unfishable.  Davey Turnbull, Darlington 14 lb (4) having fished all day was keen to get home.  Dave Hambley, Staithes, another who read the sea state well, and moved having caught 2 codlings early on.  11 lb 10 oz (5) inc a codling 4 lb 06 oz, now second on the Leader Board.

At match end some members doubted whether they could split their rod’s ferrules and all were covered glistening ice, formed by the freezing fog.

In all 31 codlings and a billet with an av/fish at 2 lb 02 oz

High water 19.40 hrs, 4.86 metres, 1009 mbar, -3°C, TR 2.5m

Low pressure in the Bay of Biscay, high pressure over Iceland joined forces to continue drawing the arctic weather over the UK.  Locally we had snow showers from first light continuing during the day, causing traffic to grind to a halt with many accidents, Lythe Bank was for shut for a few hours while gritters worked & cars were towed out of hedge backs.  Similar problems at Pond Hill, Scarborough, Blue Bank, Sleights, old winter favourites.

Sea state Northerly, thick with colour, the biggest sea we have had this season, it had grown throughout the day to over 11ft, and surging.  NNWesterly wind gusting 21mph, it was an extremely cold night -3°C possibly -7°C with the wind chill.  “The coldest conditions I’ve every fished” exclaimed Ryan Collinson.

Weed was a big problem, not just strands of bladder rack or fine sea grasses, but complete kelp stalks & fronds.  Consequently Whitby East pier was unfishable, as was the Southerly side of Whitby West.  Within minutes end tackle was dragged away.  Piers, and cliff marks were very popular but surprisingly nothing came off the cliffs.  It seems the fish have moved off the scaurs onto the sand in search of food [on gutting fish, their stomachs were found to be empty].  By match end the slush on the piers, roads and streets were sheet ice, and extremely slippery even with studded boots!

Star gazing was a bonus for the 3hrs, completely clear skies enabled anglers to watch the last evening of the Geminids meteor shower.  Fishing the last hour of flood & over top of tide on such a big sea was never going to be easy, with the added weather, some started the match then opted to join those already in Sofa Hole, texting-in “Gone home”.  Just 13 [tried to] fish with 7 weighing-in 18 codlings 39 lb 07 oz, the seasons Av/Fish is now 1 lb 12 oz, up an ounce from Sunday.

First to the weigh-in Davey Turnbull was keen to make his way back to Darlington, 3 codlings - 8 lb 06 oz best 3 lb 06 oz is closing in on 2nd Place Dave Hambley, just 5 lb 02 oz adrift.

Man of the Match, his fourth, new member Ryan Collinson, Robinhoods Bay, 6 codlings, an ounce short of a ‘double-figure bag’ - 9 lb 15 oz.  His best 2 lb 14 oz was beaten by Dylan Goldsmith, Whitby, for HFish of the night 4 lb 15½ oz.  Waiting in the Fleece hospitality, a hot vegetable soup, shared by just 3 members and the other punters.

Dave Perrett, Whitby, has joined the 100 lb Club.

Low water 17.33 hrs, 2.68 metres, 1003 mbar, 3°C, TR 2.1m

The last Sunday match before the Christmas break, an all flood match, started a ½hr after LWater on a neap tide.  Long distance Northerly swell 4ft thick with colour.  A few light snow flurries before turning into light rain at match start, footpaths and coastal paths were slick and dangerous.  SEasterly wind 3°C still had a bite to it, wind chill, wet hands, made baiting up painful.

Once fishing, it soon became apparent there was surging, whiteouts then calm, but manageable.  Thankfully no weed problems reported unlike Wednesday.  The SEasterly wind, gusting 30mph hampered casting and bite detection.  Full cloud cover until 20.00hrs, the snow/rain laden clouds blown out to sea looked menacing on the horizon.  Members reported marks looked perfect at match start but no bites, nothing, so they moved early on, (again) making good choices to find the fish, and were rewarded.

At the scales, members had to be very careful, the black ice was melting and treacherous under foot.  Just 7 members were successful, returning with 17 codlings, 1 billet, & 1 rockling from the 13 fishing.  First up Lewis Plews (Jnr), Saltburn, just one fish 3 lb 15 oz, he was rightly hopeful for a HFish win.

Dave Ward, Guisborough, the first of two ‘double-figure bags’ - 11 lb 04 oz (6) was one who correctly moved to find the fish, his best 2 lb 12½ oz.  This is Dave’s 3rd HBoFish win.

Davey Turnbull, Darlington, the second ‘Double-figure bag’ - 10 lb 02 oz (3).  Davey also took HFish of the night 6 lb 02 oz.  Next time Lewis.

Remarkably in the last 4 consecutive matches Davey Turnbull has weighed-in 58 lb 14 oz (18) Av/Fish 3 lb 04 oz.  Davey has definitely got the bit between the teeth, now stands 2nd on the Leader Board, only 4 lb 08 oz behind leader Brian Harland.  Hopefully no more little voices saying ‘turn-right to Darlo’ with 3lb’ers in the boot!!  Ever ounce counts from now on Davey!

Turnbullator Christmas No.1
PictureDavey Turnbull
Low water 20.23 hrs, 1.87 metres, 1005 mbar, 2°C, TR 3.4 m

The half-way stage of the Season, members can enjoy a two week break for Christmas.  Sea state, swell 2ft Northerly, thick with colour for the 3hr Wednesday evening match.  Icey cold SWesterly winds gusting 30+ mph which severely hampered casting and bite detection.  It was a totally cloudless & moonless night plenty of time for star gazing with numerous shooting stars.  Low water 20.23hrs, 1.87 metres allowed the 17 members to get out onto the open scaurs and fish the gullies & tangle beds.

The swells were regular, no surging and no weed, just a total lack of bites for the 3hrs.  Short casts, long casts, overhead blob all tried, the fish just were not there for than half of members.

Members were slow to the scales, fishing right up to time before the long walk/climb back to the car.  Text messages kindly received “Gone home safe.”  Heaviest Fish first, started at 1 lb 10 oz, with the best at 2 lb 04 oz until that is Mr Turnbullator turned up at 22.25hrs.  Davey Turnbull, Darlington, fumbled in his bag and pulled a fine fat codling 5 lb 09 oz, with a rocking made 6 lb 01½ oz.  Clinching his 2nd HBoFish & 4th HFish wins.  “I lost a better fish” recounted Davey “I kept trying to re-catch him, but ran out of time.”

Just 6 of the 17 managed a weigh-in, 11 codlings, 2 rocklings.

Month ending, December is definitely Davey’s, landing 19 codlings, 1 rockling for 65 lb 00 oz in 5 matches, [20 lb bar 2 ounces more than Brian Harland].  Giving Davey a Dec Av/Fish of 3 lb 04 oz, and 2 lb 15 oz for the season to date.  Davey now tops the Leader Board by 1 lb 10 oz from Brian Harland.  My records indicate Davey has only fished 15 of the 25 matches fished, and gone straight home with fish in the boot!!!!

Over the Christmas break members had chance to fish a couple of matches.  Of note WSAA Member David Ward, Guisborough, had some success.  In the Redcar & Cleveland Sea Anglers match Tues 27th Dec, David weighed-in the HFish - 4 lb 13½ oz.  Now recorded as the HFish caught Out of WSAA Competition for the David "Sten" Stonehouse Memorial Sandsend Trophy.

Then in the Cloughton Rock Anglers Festive Sweepstakes Fri 30th Dec, David won the HBoFish match - 10 lb 15 oz, both recorded in the Members Trophy Cabinet [on the web site].

First match of the new year, Match 26 of 50.  Sea state near flat with a slight close to shore Northerly lift [less than a foot], thick with colour, low pressure over Iceland dominating, strong Westerly wind 22, gusting 37 mph.  Numbers fishing well down, eight plus 1 junior due to poor conditions and the dreaded cold/chest/flu complaint going around.

At the weigh-in, overseen by Peter Horbury [didn’t fish, still recovering] just 6 members managed a very meagre weigh-in - 5 rocklings, 3 codlings, & a billet - 8 lb 10 oz.

Man of the Match, with his first win Colin Stainthorpe, Whitby 2 lb 10 oz (2), Colin’s best 2 lb 03½ oz was not enough as the HFish of the night 2 lb 05 oz went to Paul Short, Guisborough, also with his first win.

Paul Short was the only mover on the Leader Board - up one to 9th.

Hambley 6 lb’er shock
PictureDave Hambley
High water 16.56 hrs, 5.48 metres, 985 mbar, 4°C, TR 4.0 m

First Sunday match of the New Year, and enthusiasm was understandably low, low pressure systems continue dominating the weather, just 9 fished.  Some members had elected to travel north and fish the Amble Open [fishing 08.00 - 12.30hrs] an early start or overnight stay?  Either way the conditions were the same, day or night, the sea state was flat, strong SSWesterly wind, gusting 30mph with the threat of a rain shower.

Water was thick with colour, 4hrs fishing, all ebb, which started 1hr after HWater, the catch forecast was understandably low.  Unable to gain access to the scaurs until well into the match, leaving piers, and cliff marks the best options to maximise fishing time.  The sea state has been flat for too long, leaving one to assume that fish have probably moved into deeper water to start spawning.  A hard time of year, and as yet no whitings.

Two nights after the full moon, the waning ‘Wolf moon’ made a brief appearance above the horizon before heavy cloud cover thankfully obscured it.  Alternating a two hook flapper and a single pulley rig, fresh mussel and frozen blacks got the most attention, however only from small bait robbing fish.

The 4hrs soon passed, and at the scales Dave Hambley, Staithes, took his 6th Man of the Match, and 7th HFish of the night wins.  His best 6 lb 03 oz and another 2 lb 6 oz made the winning bag 8 lb 09 oz.  Recalling that he was on the phone when the 6 lb’er very nearly took his rod from its perch.  A remarkable achievement of such a poor night, well done Dave.
Dave has retaken the top spot on the Leader Board leaving Davey Turnbull, with a 6 lb 05 oz deficit.

Sunday is the members Christmas match, fishing 14.00 - 19.00hrs with the weigh-in 19.00 - 19.45hrs and meal at the Grosvenor, Robinhoods Bay.

High water 18.35 hrs, 5.37 metres, 1000 mbar, 4°C, TR 3.4 m

Low pressure continues to dominate, the only difference, the wind direction, WSWesterly, gusting 40mph, sea state flat with colour.  An all ebb 3hr match, starting a ½hr after HWater (Whitby).  Catch forecast was extremely low, reflected by just 8 members fishing (1 by default), as the rest had texted-in - not fishing.  Clear skies at the start soon clouded over but not before a bright orange moon rose above the horizon.

A scratching match, I opted to fish the sand for flat fish, and possibly whitings, 2 hook flappers, frozen blacks and mackerel baits of choice, alternating with scallop & fresh muscle to tempt billets.  Not a single bite until 21.20hrs, landing a flounder hopes were high of a ‘weigh-in’, dashed as it was 3mm undersized.

Having set the scales up in the Fleece yard for protection from the wind, just 3 members recorded a weigh-in, which when combined recorded the worst weigh-in this season - 5 assorted fish - 5 lb 09 oz.  2 codlings, 1 flounder, 1 dab, and the season’s first whiting, thanks to Brian Harland.

Man of the Match, Ryan Collinson, Robin Hoods Bay, also fished the sand, reported catching 7 undersized fish, and 2 fish of size.  Ryan had targeted flat fish at the start of the match over HWater and was rewarded with a flounder of 1 lb 00 oz, and HFish of the night 1 lb 14 oz, having switched to 4/0’s to target codlings.

Ryan now has 5 HBoFish wins & 3 HFish wins (which includes ‘potentially’ the season’s Wooden Spoon Award for ‘Lightest-Fish’ to win HFish.  A codling 1 lb 08 oz Wed 2nd Nov ’22).  The way the season is going this could be broken in the remaining 21 matches.  Recorded in the WSAA Archives there are instances where nothing had been weighed-in!
Dave Perrett, Whitby, reported hooking a codling, but after 4 attempts to let the fish swim free from a snag, had to resort to the ‘do or die’ pull free, and lost.

Davey Turnbull, Darlington opted for Sofa Hole allowing Brian Harland, Whitby, to take 2nd place on the Leader Board from him.  At this time of year places can be won/gained by persistence, just plugging away with meagre scratching weigh-ins.  Current leader, Dave Hambley, Staithes, is now the only member who has recorded more than the competitive 5 lb match average, just 5 lb 01 oz in excess.

Tight lines for the members Christmas match on Sunday.

Fishing from 14.00 - 19.00hrs it was the members Christmas match [1 month late due to the World Cup] followed by an excellent meal and presentation at the Grosvenor, Robinhoods Bay.

The sea state had grown massively from first light.  NNWesterly swell 10ft+, thick with colour, however it was surging aggressively.  A surging, growing sea is far from ideal, and many members do not like such conditions.  Bright sunshine at match start soon clouded over, a chilly WNWesterly wind 6°C in daylight dropped to 2°C by match end.  Weed was a problem for a few, forcing them to move, whilst others were totally clear for the entire match.

At the scales Peter Horbury & Jason Ebison oversaw the weigh-in outside the Grosvenor.  Lewis Plews (Jnr), Robinhoods Bay, 2nd overall weighed in a PB codling 5 lb 04 oz.  Keeley Fairbanks, Thorpe Willoughby, 7th overall registered her first weigh-in, and the ladies HFish 2 lb 03½ oz.

No surprise to Man of the Match as conditions suited Davey Turnbull, Darlington, 4 codlings - 18 lb 04½ oz, also weighed HFish 6 lb 02½ oz winning the Michael Deadman Memorial Trophy.  Davey has regained the No.1 spot on the Leader Board, by 10 lb over Dave Hambley, notching up his 6th HFish, & 3rd HBoFish wins.  He now also leads in the HBoFish Monthly Sweeps but missed out by ½ oz to level HFish of the Month with Dave Hambley (@ 6lb 03 oz).

One or two better fish showing - Briand Harland 4 lb 11 oz, Paul Short 4 lb 07 oz, & Ryan Collinson 3 lb 08 oz.
The best weigh-in for January to date - 82 lb 08 oz - 32 codlings, 3 rocklings, the Seasons Av/Fish is now 1 lb 12 oz.
Having lost my end tackle and some line on my first cast, it was a pleasant surprise (& a weigh-in) to pull it all in on my fifth cast, complete with a rockling!

Low water 18.58 hrs, 2.3 metres, 1001 mbar, -1°C, TR 2.5 m

The WSAA member’s 3hr evening match started at LWater on a neap tide, just 2.5 metres between tides.  The NNWesterly sea state was still running from Sunday’s Christmas match.  It was forecasted to increase to 13ft, but thankfully had started to wane from midday.  This change in sea state caught a few out as ‘sofa hole’ was their option.  By 19.00hrs the swell sets were regular with no surging.  The NWesterly wind, clear skies, on the other hand had not let up 16 gusting 30mph, and very cold - with wind chill -3°C [the sand above the HWater line was frozen as were access footpaths].

Once the match was underway weed was a problem, and lots of it, as soon as end tackle hit the water, rods were pulled over.  A move was required that cut travel time to a minimum.  Or walk to a nearby mark and risk similar conditions.  For others it was weed free but pestered by undersized pin codlings.

Members were quick to return, road works, detours and traffic lights, meant members packed up early to make the weigh-in.  Ten seniors and 1 junior fished with 8 seniors returning to the scales, 17 codlings, & 1 rockling.  Members enjoyed a most welcome hot vegetable potage in the Fleece after the weigh-in.

Man of the Match, his 5th, Brian Harland, Whitby, 3 codlings for 8 lb 10½ oz.  He had two good fish 3 lb 13 oz & 3 lb 09½ oz but not good enough for HFish of the night.  Brian moves up into second on the Leader Board, leaving a 7 lb 01 oz deficit for Dave Hambley in 3rd and a 7 lb 09 oz deficit to first place Davey Turnbull.  No doubt these three will continue to swop places in the remaining 18 matches, and not to discount new member Ryan Collinson.

Dave Ward, Guisborough, took the HFish honour, his 2nd, with a codling 4 lb 02½ oz, a lovely light coloured fresh run sand fish, and 2 codlings for second place 6 lb 15½ oz.

Only two members have maintained the req’d 5 lb match average weigh-in to be competitive, Brian Harland & Davey Turnbull who also has the highest Av/fish of 2 lb 15 oz which is some achievement.

Sunday 12th February has been picked for the Secretary’s Challenge Trophy match Cloughton - V - Whitby, just awaiting confirmation from Cloughton Rocks.

‘You are joking?’ asks Hambley
PictureDave Hambley
Low water 22.46 hrs, 0.92 metres, 1034 mbar, 2°C, TR 3.9 m

Sea state, flat calm, no colour, high pressure now in charge.  With HWater only 1¾hrs back, 5.8 metres, it was a case of fish a HWater mark & then travel once cut off points were safe to pass, or stay at home and start an hour or so late.
During the day members had the opportunity to fish the Jamie Richardson Memorial match [heaviest single fish], fishing 09.00 - 15.00hrs.  130 seniors & 1 Jnr fished with just 12 weighing-in, won by Freddie Barker, Scarborough 4 lb 07 oz 02 drms.

Sofa Hole was very popular, and after a poor days fishing not many were keen for another 4hrs, leaving just 10 WSAA members fishing the evening match with an extremely low catch forecast.  Little to no wind, 100% cloud cover it was a pleasant evening until 20.40hrs when a very brisk & extremely cold Southerly wind picked up.  Wind chill made baiting up painful on wet fingers.  Alternating between a two hook flapper and pennel pulley rig I caught 8 undersized billets and one lobster claw.

Members reported the tide flew out, [the biggest ebb this season 0.9m, coupled with high pressure] quickly revelling kelpless gullies!  For a while now members have been reporting marks have lost all their kelp beds, the acres of waving fronds have gone, leaving stalks.  Is this kelp bed devastation related to the pyridine from the River Tees dredging, and mass die off of crustaceans?  If there is no underwater forest to harbour sea life ie the lower food chain to live, what’s next?

At the scales, a stunned Dave Hambley, Staithes, asks ‘You are joking, I’m the only one with fish, wow?’  Dave was indeed the only one to weigh-in - 3 lb 13 oz, 2 codlings, his best 2 lb 08 oz.  Dave now has 8 HF & 7 HBoFish wins.  Dave’s Av/fish is 2 lb 01 oz, a long way from Davey Turnbull’s 2 lb 15 oz.  Dave now tops the Sunday League leaving a 2 lb 06 oz deficit for Brian Harland.

1st - Dave Hambley - 2 codlings

“Just the one” - Hambley
PictureDave Hambley
High water 18.34 hrs, 5.97 metres, 1030 mbar, 4°C, TR 4.5 m

The NWesterly wind had been forecasted to pick up on the flood [noon], by match start 19.00hrs, sure enough a NWesterly swell 1ft was growing, more surface blash at first.  A growing sea, now on the ebb, is not to everyones liking but the same for all, just 10 members fishing, again catch forecast was low.  Crystal clear water, clear skies and a small waxing crescent moon turned orange and fell below the horizon mid match.  Members were spread far & wide, piers and beaches fished for a weigh-in, another scratching match.

Fishing was extremely slow, conversation turned to the green comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF), due to be visible [clear skies] Wed 1st Feb.  The wind steadily increased in strength, hampering casting, and bite detection.  Facing the wind members got cold very quickly with a number throwing in the towel before time.  Not a bite for the first two hours, no rocklings, billets nor pin cod!  A change of tack, using the wind to launch a bait out into the tide it wasn’t long before a well hooked codling was in the fish bag, but alas no more.  Single 5/0 pulley rig loaded with peeler & frozen blacks.

Sheltering from the wind, the scales had been set up in the Fleece yard.  First up Dave Ward, Guisborough, fished the sand, 4 dabs for 2 lb 00 oz.  Next, “just the one” says Dave Hambley, Staithes, as he slid a fine spragg 7 lb 07½ oz in the pan.  Winning both Man of the Match & HFish of the night.  His HFish also takes the lead in the Monthly Sweeps, with just one match of Jan left.

Dave Hambley’s deficit to leader Davey Turnbull now 3 lb 05 oz passing Brian Harland by 4 lb 04 oz - 18 matches left.
One for the diary - Sunday 12th February ’23.

High water 22.03 hrs, 4.94 metres, 1016 mbar, 8°C, TR 2.5 m

Last match of January, an all flood match to HWater, another scratching match.  Very strong Westerly winds, 23 gusting 37mph, 80% cloud cover and no moon light.  During the day a slight long distance Northerly swell had been trying to grow, knocked back by the off shore winds.  By match start there was 1ft of regular swells, with colour.

Eleven members were spread far & wide seeking that all important weigh-in, just one fish would do.  So imaging getting all kitted up, and within 40yds, you’re walking back to your car - no head torch, and home is Guisborough.  Thankfully for Paul Short I had a spare my bag - panic over.

The wind was a problem, for both casting and bite detection, you were reliant on fish self-hooking.  Fishing the beach for the first time, 70 lb shock leader, 20 lb mainline for distance and less wind drag.  Scaling down to 2/0’s, two hook flapper rigs looking for flat fish, and possibly a whiting or passing codling, however only a pin cod and an undersized billet were caught.  Fishing was very slow, unless you had fresh lug worm.  Then it was ‘fish a chuck’ undersized though!

20.30hrs a ½hr of rain, and then the wind dropped before returning with vengeance WNWesterly with increase vigour.  As the tide pushed-in some shelter was gained from the land mass.

Waiting with the scales set up in the Fleece yard, texts started “Gone home, safe.”  Scales closed at 22.30hrs, just 3 members had weighed-in, 4 codlings, 8 lb 07 oz.  Man of the Match was a very happy and giddy Davey Turnbull, Darlington 1 codling 4 lb 06 oz.  Davey’s stats - 11 wins - 7 HBoFish & 4 HFish.  Remarkably his Av/Fish is now 3 lb 00 oz.  55 fish for 164 lb 07 oz.

Two ‘double-figure bags’

Sea state for the mid-week match, long distance Northerly swell 6-9ft, brisk Westerly wind, gusting 30mph.  A bright ¾ moon hidden behind 90% cloud cover thankfully did not make a full appearance.  No chance of seeing the ‘green comet’, it will however be back in 50,000 yrs!

Paul Short, lesson learnt, had packed two head torches, with a third stored in his car [for emergency use].  Although I did have to pick up his coat at the end of the track before the match had even started.

Fishing, allegedly the last 40 mins of ebb, unexplained the ebb just kept going and going.  There was some surging nothing drastic with no draw back as one might have expected.  The flood did not start until 21.10hrs, and even then it did not rush in.  Minimal weed, just some bladder rack in the surf, end tackle was stable in the surf with no loss.  Four good bites but no fish, on retrieve the hook was upside down.

Of the 14 seniors and 1 junior fishing, 9 plus the junior had a weigh-in.  34 codlings, 4 rocklings for 74 lb 06 oz best fish 6 lb 05 oz from match winner S Ingleston, Whitby.
