Sunday, members festive Christmas match, fishing 2 - 7pm, weigh-in by 8pm at The Stakesby Arms, followed by a Christmas carvery, and presentation. The match kindly sponsored by members Malcolm & Paula Pitman of Hook, Line & Sinker, Church St. Whitby.
Sea state had dropped away NEasterly 3ft, flattened by the SWesterly winds, moving further into the West by late afternoon. Wind speeds of 22mph gusting to 35mph. Finding a sheltered mark over HW, and in daylight was not easy. Recent heavy seas have deposited masses of weed, all refloated at HW. Midday heavy rain soon past, as did the cloud cover, and the temperature dropped once the sun set, not as cold as Wednesday night.
£100 sponsorship, split £50, £30, £20 for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places, thereafter a pick of the prize table laid on by Treasurer Dave Perrett. Fishing for two trophies, the WSAA Christmas Match Trophy & the Michael Deadman Memorial Trophy. The latter awarded to the member who weighs the Heaviest Single fish, donated by Richard Deadman in 2016, in memory of his father Michael Deadman. The WSAA Christmas match Trophy, a trophy originally donated to the Whitby Coarse Fishing Club by Ray Hardwick, of the Royal Hotel, in 1970. The coarse fishing club folded, and the trophy was then donated to WSAA by Dave Smith and renamed.
At the scales Bernard Vasey was in festive mood wearing a Santa hat, tripod bedecked with tinsel. Of the 31 entered only 17 managed a weigh-in of assorted fish 25 codlings, 9 r/lings, 9 flat fish & 9 whitings. Rob Allison, won the coveted Christmas Match Trophy, 7 codlings & a r/ling 12 lb 13 oz - the only double figure bag. Rob last won the Christmas match in 2015. Consequently on the Leader Board, both Rob & Denis Thompson have past the 100 lb marker, with Rob now trailing Denis by only 11 oz. Rob also pips Paul Kilpatrick, by 1 oz into HBoFish Monthly Sweep leader. Malcolm Pitman was on hand to present the trophies & prizes.
Members were overjoyed with praise to Keeley Fairbanks who landed the Heaviest Fish, a fine spragg 8 lb 07½ oz, finishing 3rd overall. Keeley’s partner Richard Deadman reported she played the fish to the bottom of the cliff, but neither could lift it despite their best efforts. Time was now 18.30 hrs, Richard decided he ‘had’ to get on to the scaurs below if they had any chance of landing this fish. He packed up their gear, loaded it into the van, leaving Keeley on the cliff mark to maintain tension on the rod & line whilst he drove to gain access to the scaurs. Once under their fishing position it was no easy task to reach the line, but lady luck was on their side and a wave pushed the fish, and line within his grasp. Unclipping the trace, and seeing the fish for the first time he was now under pressure to get it, Keeley & himself to the weigh-in before 8pm. Well done Keeley.
After the 17 successful anglers had had the pick of the prize table, the remaining anglers’ names were pulled from a hat for their choice of the prizes. Members also received a scratch card as they chose their prize. Before the raffle, both Peter Horbury & Dave Perrett received gift bags in recognition of their work from WSAA members. Members received a Christmas cracker with their meal, inside which, Dave Perrett had placed a raffle ticket. Colin Stainthorpe, won the main raffle prize, a Christmas cake made by Rob Allison’s mother.
Many thanks to Tracey Stevens, landlady of The Stakesby Arms, and her staff who, again as last year, laid on an excellent carvery and hospitality for WSAA members. Many thanks to Bernard Vasey & Dave Perrett for helping with proceedings.
Colin Stainthorpe & Paul Kilpatrick arranged to fish the Singles Knockout Final during the Christmas match. Congratulations to Colin who is (again) crowned Singles K/O Champion, having also been last years Champion.
Colin Stainthorpe 5 lb 01 oz (4) - V - Paul Kilpatrick 10 oz (1)
Correction - at the presentation, Keeley’s fish was thought to the HF this season. Ste Swales leads 8 lb 09 oz Wed 29th Nov 2017. Keeley's fish has been recorded in the members Records, as the HF landed by a lady.
On Saturday night Bernard Vasey weighed a fish ‘Out of Competition’ 5 lb 11½ oz, setting the bench mark.
Results:- 62 lb 08 oz (Av 1 lb 03 oz) - 25 codlings, 9 r/lings, 9 flat fish & 9 whitings

Stakesby Arms carvery & presentation
22.35 hrs Saturday night, and Bernard rings me "I've got this 8 lb 11 oz fish, can I come up & weigh it with you?"
No problem, prepped my camera ready for Bernard's arrival - 5 mins.
We weighed it on my scales (same as club) 5 lb 11½ oz
We weighed it again on the WSAA scales & pan - 5 lb 11½ oz
Bernard checked his bag, as he had over 17 lb of fish, for a 'bigger fish'.
None to be found - we came to the conclusion he'd miss read the five as an eight.
We joke about it now ☺
