Cloughton Rocks victorious
Low water 12.20 hrs, 1.4 metres, 1033 mbar, 6°C, TR 4.3 m
The two clubs had revived their inter-club match 7th Feb 2016, with Cloughton leading 3-2. The revival was brought about by a joint effort from both Club Secretaries, Peter Halder & Peter Horbury, and long may it continue with the support of the members from WSAA & CRA’s. It was Cloughton’s turn to pick the date, and hosts WSAA kept the same boundary as in 2016.
The 6hr match, fished 10.00 - 16.00hrs, within the narrow boundaries Cowbar Steel to Landing scaur Robin Hoods Bay - a 'challenge', hence the name. Low water 12.17hrs, 1.25 metres. Sea state close to shore NNEasterly swell 2ft, colour varied from thick as chocolate to crystal clear. Weigh-in and hospitality at the Fleece, Whitby 16.00-16.45hrs.
A good turn-out from both Clubs, WSAA 16 & 11 from Cloughton Rocks. Both Clubs put £50 into the prize fund, each member paid £5 - total £235 - split 50/50 for 3 prizes each for both HBoFish & HFish - £58.75, £35.25 & £ 23.50, all in, all out.
There was a gentle NNEasterly breeze, cloudless skies, and overly warm for the time of year. Competitors chased a fast ebbing tide, fishing deep into the revealed tangle beds. Fish bites [if you were lucky] were timid, and playful more than likely from small undersized fish. Most successful bait seemed to be frozen lug and fresh mussel. The swell dropped off for an hour as the flood rushed forward pushing anglers off the scaurs onto rocky outcrops, cliffs or piers.
At the weigh-in weigh-master Bernard Vasey, and Jason Ebison had given up their afternoon for the event. For Cloughton Rocks only 2 of the 11 weighed-in - Alec Rooke 8 lb 11 oz (5) and Chris Scaife 3 lb 01½ oz (2) - 11 lb 12½ oz giving a 1 lb 01 oz aggregate. For Whitby Sea Anglers 7 of the 16 weighed-in 14 assorted fish - 13 lb 08½ oz giving a 14 oz aggregate - not enough. Cloughton Rocks won the event and now lead 4-2 - Congratulations from all at Whitby Sea Anglers.
After some welcome hot food catered for by Sue Harrison anglers thanked her as Secretary Peter Horbury delivered the presentation. Many thanks to the Fleece and their staff for their hospitality, not forgetting Bernard Vasey & Jason Ebison for overseeing the weigh-in. Mark Stonehouse, Secretary Cloughton Rocks accepted the Secretary’s Challenge Trophy from Peter Horbury, promising a match next season.
