WSAA Christmas Match Trophies
Stuart & Malcolm share trophy

Low water 13.00 hrs, 1.4 metres, High water 19.03 hrs,
5.4 metres, 1031mbar, 10°C
The weather was far from festive, nor seasonal for the WSAA annual Christmas match, ‘no jacket req’d’, it was so mild. Fishing from 2-7pm, weigh-in 7-8pm at The Stakesby Arms, members needn’t rush back to the weigh-in and could fish to full time from any either end of the boundary.
There was a gentle SWesterly breeze, 10°C, some welcome light cloud cover to shield the sun shine from the water. Plenty of colour despite the lack lustre 0-1 ft NWesterly swell. Swell was periodic, and came in short burst for the all flood match up to high water 19.03 hrs, 5.4 metres.
There was an excellent turnout of 34 members fishing the 5hr match. Conditions were such it was to be a scratching match, with members changing marks in search of an all-important weigh-in as catch forecasts were low. Fishing the rock in daylight then moving to the beach for whitings as darkness fell was successful for one or two. Fresh lug worm and mackerel strips being most successful baits.
Bernard Vasey wasn’t exactly rushed off his feet at the weigh-in (but made of point of weighing to the ½ oz as he knew it could be close) as a steady trickle of 21 successful members arrived with their meagre catches. 12 whitings, 8 billets, 8 flat fish, 7 codlings, 6 rocklings and a wrasse top the scales at 34 lb 14 oz, 42 assorted fish in total Av 13 oz.
As we waited, Bernard reported hooking a good fish 1st cast but was unable to get it moving, constantly nodding he tried for 20 mins walking 50yds left then 50 yds right in order to retrieve it. Sadly all that came back was ½ a hook snood.
There was a tie for 1st place, Malcolm Pitman - 6 whitings & a flat fish - 4 lb 03 oz, weighing-in in front of Stuart Swales, as he waited for his turn with 1 wrasse (2 lb 03½ oz), 1 billet & a rockling for exactly the same weight 4 lb 03 oz. Not even ½ oz could separate them. Malcolm & Paula Pitman of Hook, Line & Sinker, Church St. very kindly & generous sponsor the event, so Malcolm elected not to take his share of the prize money. He did however receive a prize from the table and will be engraved on the trophy.
The HFish fell to Chris McCarthy (Jnr) 2 lb 06½ oz codling. Chris finished 6th overall and is the first member to receive the new Heaviest Fish Trophy for the Christmas match donated by Richard Deadman, The Michael Deadman Memorial Trophy in memory of his father who sadly past away earlier this year.
Many thanks to Tracey Stevens, landlady of The Stakesby Arms, and her staff for an excellent carvery laid on for all members after the weigh-in prior to prize giving. Nobody went home without a prize as those who weren’t successful in the match were drawn from a hat and had pick of the table. Each member received a lottery scratch card and 2 raffle tickets for the extensive raffle table all laid on by WSAA Treasurer Dave Perrett.
