Bell Trophy day
Low water 12.18 hrs, 1.47 metres, 987 mbar, 10°C, TR 4.3 m
08.30hrs 57 anglers from 5 local angling clubs met at The Oasis Café, Marine Drive, Scarborough, to register for the 97th Bell Trophy match. Organisers of the event, Scarborough Rocks invite local clubs to compete for The Sana Bell. Whitby Sea Anglers submitted two teams in the hope of winning the event. Fishing from 10.00 - 14.00hrs within the boundaries, Argyle Gulley, Hayburn Whyke to Coble Landing, Filey.
Storm Eunice had recently passed through and another low pressure system [unnamed] was centred below Iceland Sunday morning. Forecasted wind speeds 30, gusting 56mph WSWesterly by midday. Sea state 1-2ft Northerly swell, thick with colour. Most unwelcome, heavy rain was due by midday.
Catch forecast, extremely low due to the inclement conditions and time of year, nonetheless there was a match to fish. Fishing the last 2½hrs of the ebb, low water 12.30hrs, 1.47 metres, and 1½hrs of flood. The wind, off-shore, vortexed down the coastline, one minute overhead, then on the left shoulder, then the right, and to finish off the wind curled over and blew the wave tops back at the anglers. The rain started at 12.30hrs, and got heavier all afternoon, it was not a cold day, just very unpleasant.
The swells dropped off on the ebb to slack water, as the tide turned the swells grew and were more regular. However they did not keep pace with the flood, leading to periods of calm. Small baits, big baits, short cast, long cast, all tried, but many reporting ‘not a bite!’
Colin Stainthorpe, Whitby, WSAA Man of the Match reported catching his fish before 11.00hrs, his best 1 lb 00 oz beaten by Jonny Watson, Guisborough, 1 lb 07 oz for HFish.
Just 4 members weighed-in and WSAA recorded its worst weigh-in this season 5 lb 10 oz [5 fish], from the 14 fishing. This supersedes the weigh-in of 15th Dec 2021 - 7 lb 12 oz (10 fish).
Of the 57 Bell Trophy competitors only 23 weighed-in - 31 fish - 41 lb 15 oz - Av fish 1 lb 06 oz.
Congratulations to winners Cloughton Rocks, their 7th win, and last won by them in 2017.
