Match 14 of 51
WSAA 37th Annual Open Competition
Sandsend beach 8am en-route to my chosen mark
Low water 08.41 hrs, 0.7 metres, 1027 mbar, 10°C
An excellent turnout, one hundred and eighteen senior anglers, one lady and three juniors fished the 37th Annual Open run by Whitby Sea Anglers Association. The 6hr match started at 10am and finished at 4pm with competitors fishing within the boundaries of Coble Landing, Filey to Skinningrove Beck.
The first place prize of £500 was again kindly & generously sponsored by Wilf Nobles Plant Hire & Construction, Ruswarp Nr Whitby. James Noble could not attend the presentation so sponsor Paula Pitman, of Hook Line & Sinker, Church Street, Whitby, along with WSAA President & Chairman William Atkinson shared the duties to give out the prizes from a groaning prize table. Many thanks to all our sponsors.
Sunday morning was bright and sunny, a growing, ‘close to shore’, as opposed to ‘long distance’ sea state NWesterly swell with plenty of colour. The all flood match started 1 hr 20 mins after low water. The wind had changed from a SWesterly overnight to a light, cold, NWesterly wind 10mph, not strong enough to cause any problems. The last hour however was spoilt as cloud cover moved in leading to light rain.
The weigh-in was held at sponsors, The Fleece, Church Street, Whitby 16.30 - 17.15 hrs, overseen by Chairman William Atkinson, and weigh masters Bernard Vasey & James Gilpin. Thirty eight competitors returned with 85 assorted fish - 49 codlings, 19 wrasse, 12 billets, 2 pollock, 2 flat fish and 1 blegg/pouting for 194 lb 04 oz
Overall winner was Matty Hillaby, Scarborough, who also had the Heaviest Fish, a pollock 11 lb 00½ oz along with 5 billets taking 1st Place with a total bag weight of 15 lb 12 oz
The second Heaviest Fish, also a pollock was landed by ex WSAA member Dave Smith, Whitby, 7 lb 12½ oz. Dave finished 5th overall with 8 lb 13 oz.
Third Place prize of £200 was shared by the two Andy’s, Clarke & Tymen with an additional £70 from the table.
Bass Boots sponsored the Heaviest Fish sweep and the winner Matty Hillaby receives a bespoke pair of chest waders.
Many thanks to Malcolm Scallion.
In the optional pairs - ‘all in, all out Pairs’.
Matty Hillaby and Pete Dunn won with a total bag weight of 24 lb 01½ oz.
Runners up - at this time I don't have the information.
17th place Special Prize from Java café was shared by the Damien Townsend, Whitby & P Johnson - £50 + £20 from the table.
Flat Fish competition sponsored by Mick Beedle, Builder, 2 prizes of £50 & £25 for the Heaviest and runner up. This was won by WSAA Secretary Peter Horbury, a flounder of 1 lb 01 oz. Runner-up Peter Major picked up £25 and also the Special prize of £25 for coming last in the event.
Many thanks to:-
Ex WSAA member Jimmy Hewitson for being on hand to take photographs.
James Gilpin, Bernard Vasey and Chairman William Atkinson for running a very smooth weighing-in station.
Paula & Malcolm Pitman for raffle ticket sales which raised £213.
Dave Perrett for organizing all the Place Prizes and organizing the raffle Table.
All our sponsors without whom the event would not be such a success.
