39th Annual Open Fishing Competition
Low water 11.07 hrs, 1.1 metres, 1019 mbar, 5°C
An excellent turn out, One Hundred and Ten anglers took part in Whitby Sea Anglers Association’s 39th Annual Open fishing competition on Sunday 25th November. Fishing 10.00 - 16.00hrs
The 1st Place prize of £500 was sponsored by Wilf Nobles Plant Hire & Construction, Ruswarp (Nr Whitby). The weigh-in & presentation was held in The Fleece, Church St, Whitby, where landlady Carla Smith and her staff laid on hot food and hospitality for the visiting anglers.
Sea state was ENEasterly with little to no colour, save some from recent heavy rainfall. Close set swells ie close to shore were regular with little to no surging. No sooner than low water was reached 11.07hrs, the tide turned very quickly, aided by the on shore wind, and grew in height 3-5ft. ENEasterly wind 16-20 mph hampered casting and bite detection. Anglers reported lines and end tackle being fouled by fine green weed. Due to the clarity of the water, bites were timid, with many takes not returning.
At the scales, manned by Bernard Vasey, James Gilpin and Dave Perrett, James Hewitson was also on hand to take all the photographs. They were all kept busy, with an orderly queue forming as 48 weighed-in 156 fish for 392 lb 09 oz. The top 14 anglers all having ‘double figure’ bags.
The £500 first place prize was won by Cloughton angler Simon Barker, 6 fish for 21 lb 03 oz
£300 second place prize went to Andy Crow, 8 fish 20 lb 07 oz
£200 third place prize went to Steve Dixon, 8 fish 19 lb 07½ oz
In the Superpool sweeps the Heaviest Single Fish was won by Chris France 6 lb 01½ oz, and the second HFish was landed by WSAA member Rob Allison 5 lb 10½ oz
Just one Junior angler weighed-in John Horner - 1 lb 15½ oz
The Flat fish prize was won by local Whitby angler Dameon Townsend 1 lb 03½ oz - £35.00
In the Optional Pairs, Simon & Fred Barker - a combined weigh-in of 37 lb 00 oz - 13 fish.
Special Placed Prizes -
10th £50*, 17th £50 Angel Fisheries, 25th £50*, & Last Place £50*.
