After an excellent meal & superb hospitality WSAA Secretary Peter Horbury summarised the season and members achievements.

There were three domino cards to draw, first was won by Peter Horbury, second by Claire Ebison,
and the third by Dave Perrett

Good evening all and a warm welcome to our guests.

Nice to see you all and thank you for attending.

Could we show our appreciation to the staff here at The Stables after an excellent meal?  [Applause]

This is our 67th Annual Presentation.

Total weight for the season - 2,324 lb 10 oz, the total weigh-in was down on preceding years, excluding the two seasons interrupted by Covid.

However total fish numbers were up by 100 since 2015 - 2016 at 1,735 fish.

Hopefully everyone in the Club gets a mention tonight.

The season start was affected by the mass deaths of crustaceans, flat fish, and cephalopods washed up on the north east coastline.

A number of members did not enter into the Monthly Sweeps at the start of the season, or did not keep up with paying for match entries.  But it makes members sit up and rush to thrust money in Dave’s hands for match entry.

There were the tales of woe, the one that got away & the unprintable side-splittingly funny stories from Davey Turnbullator the Turd - self named of course

September 2021

Very first match of the Season Wed 29th, the first of 3 new WSAA records - Andy Neasham secures the new Lesser Spotted Dogfish record - 2 lb 15½ oz.  Well done Andy.
Picture

October 2021

‘Man of the Month’ Dave Hambley - 29 fish - 58 lb 06 oz with Brian Harland 8 lb 06 oz adrift.

Match 2 - Sunday 3rd, and the second WSAA Record fish is broken when Jonny Watson weighs-in a pollock of 9 lb 09½ oz.  Well done Jonny.

Match 6 - Sunday 17th, and the third WSAA Record fish, and PB for Denis Thompson - 5 lb 11 oz bass.  Well done Denis.

Four Double Figure Bags, two from Davey Turnbull, one each from Dave Hambley & Dave Ward.

Monthly Sweeps were won by Jonny Watson & Dave Ward

November 2021

‘Man of the Month’ Davey Turnbull - 20 fish - 55 lb 02 oz with Danny Middlemas 4 lb 15 oz adrift.

Match 11 - Paul Neasham has done well this season landed HFish 6 lb 05½ oz.

Dave Hambley first to the 100lb Club after our annual Open Match.

Thanks to our sponsor Wilf Noble Plant Hire & Construction, the Open attracted 117 seniors & 8 juniors, of whom only 49 weighed-in.  Many thanks to all the other sponsors, including our own members without their generosity it would not be such a popular event.

The Open was won by Steve Dixon, 2nd Place Andy Clarke HFish 8 lb 06 oz, and WSAA member Rob Allison 2nd HFish 7 lb 08 oz - 4th overall.  Andy Neasham & Mike Saunders made the Top Ten.  Full list of members achievements are included in the pamphlet.

Six Double Figure Bags in November, Danny Middlemas, James Moore, Peter Horbury, Dave Hambley, Rob Allison, and Davey Turnbull.

November clocked-up the best season’s weigh-in - 622 lb 08 oz - 374 fish Av 1 lb 11 oz.

Monthly Sweeps won by Peter Horbury - 6 lb 02 oz HFish, a good fish & a target set for the Dedicated Official Trophy, between Bernard Vasey, Dave Perrett & myself.   For James Moore HBoFish, potentially for the season, 24 lb 02 oz (8).
However Davey Turnbull had the HFish 7 lb 05, his second spragg of the month was not entered into The Monthly Sweeps.  Diesel money Davey!

December 2021

‘Man of the Month’ Danny Middlemas - 35 fish - 29 lb 09 oz with Brian Harland only 4 lb 10 oz adrift.

First match & Davey Turnbull joins the 100lb Club.

Thanks to Mike Vickers & Mark Sivils for sponsoring the Christmas match.  Very much appreciated.
Dave Ward won [for the 1st time] with 10 whitings, and 2 dabs - 7 lb 01 oz.

The Heaviest Fish 3 lb 08½ oz fell to Colin Stainthorpe who won The Michael Deadman Memorial Trophy for the Heaviest Fish.

Brian Harland left it until the last match to claim the only Double Figure Bag of December.

Monthly Sweeps, Danny Middlemas & Brian Harland.

Tuesday evening 21st December and Danny Middlemas comes around my house to record Heaviest Fish caught Outside of Competition 8 lb 15½ oz for the David Sten Stonehouse memorial trophy - well done Dan.

Knockouts:- We concluded 2020 - 2021 & 2021 - 2022 Season concurrently.  In the Singles it was Brian Harland - V - Dave Perrett in both, and Brian came out victorious.

In the Doubles for 2020 - 2021 Season Brian Harland & Paul Short won.  For this season a ‘dream-team’ of Dave Hambley & Danny Middlemas won.

Christmas break

January 2022

‘Man of the Month’ Danny Middlemas again - 92 fish - 62 lb 15 oz this time with Dave Hambley only 1 lb 02 oz adrift.
Six Double Figure Bags of fish, 2 from both Danny Middlemas & Dave Hambley, Dave Perrett & Colin Stainthorpe.

Wed 12th January and Dave Perrett was 2oz short of equalling my 6 lb 02 oz fish.

Sunday 30th January Storm Carrie was a challenging night, and Keeley Fairbanks secures the Lady’s trophy with a single codling of 1 lb 07 oz.  Well done.

Monthly Sweeps won by Brian Harland & Danny Middlemas.

February 2022

‘Man of the Month’ Dave Hambley - 21 fish - 35 lb 01 oz, Davey Turnbull 3 lb 07 oz adrift.

Wed 2nd February & Dave Hambley joins the 200lb Club.

Wednesday 16th Storm Dudley.

In the Bell Trophy we put in 2 teams, Team B came 5th whilst Team A came 6th.   Cloughton Rocks won.
Wednesday 23rd February and Danny Middlemas Joins the 200lb Club.

Sunday 27th and both HFish & HBoFish for the season to date were smashed - Dave Hambley 12 fish 24 lb 08 oz, and Brian Harland 10 lb 13 oz spragg - well done.

Monthly Sweeps won by Brian Harland & Dave Hambley.

March 2022

‘Man of the Month- Dave Hambley - 16 fish - 19 lb 15 oz, Davey Turnbull a close second - 9 fish - 18 lb 15 oz - a deficit of just 1 lb

Sun 6th, and the Secretary’s Challenge Trophy was won by Cloughton Rocks aggregate - 1 lb 01 oz to our 14 oz

Bernard hasn’t fished as many matches as he would of liked, ‘hip & leg pains’ meant he could not stand still for long.  But he enjoyed what matches he did fish, however on Wednesday 16th he had a nightmare - whilst reeling in a fish, half the handle on his reel snapped.  All that remained intact was the handles counter-weight with which he successfully landed his fish.

Match 48 Sunday 20th March and Davey Turnbull joins the 200lb Club.
In the closing matches, a big question ‘Could Davey Turnbull catch & pass Danny Middlemas’, and finish in 2nd Place?  Would he regret the Open match non-match entry fee £2.50 where he lost 8 lb 08 oz towards his season’s total?

Not forgetting Davey’s admissions to asking himself, on more than one occasion “Turn left to Whitby or right to Darlington”, “Turn left to Whitby or right to Darlington”, and “there I am Peter driving to Darlington with fish!”

Dave Hambley and I estimated these totalled weights at 15 lb or so, more than enough for 2nd Place.  Davey further admitted [on Wednesday] to catching a billet last match which he had kept alive in a pool.  Putting it in his fish bag & set off come match end, he had second thoughts and put it back in the pool to live another day.

In the closing matches even Dave Hambley dropped below the 5 lb/match average but finished the season just 3 lb 13 oz adrift of the 255 lb for the 51 match season, a remarkable 4 lb 15 oz match average.  Well done.

There were 46 ‘Double-Figure bags of fish’, members individual best bags are listed in the pamphlet.

Behind the title of WSAA the members make the Club, without whose generous sponsorship & time, this Club would struggle to run smoothly, and long may it continue. Many thanks, you know who you are, for your sponsorship, time & effort.
Without all this support the Club would not be what it is today.

28 Memorable moments
Dave Hambley, No, it’s not you, but we did, as we do every season, run through all the miss fortunes of admitted mishaps.
I think some do it on purpose, I mean how do you leave your rod rest on the scaur at low water on the last match of the season, Dave Perrett?

Paul Short walks all the way to the east pier extension, sets up, rigs up, and then realises his fresh bait bucket is still by his car on Church Street.  A long walk but only misses 10mins.  However his mare of a night continues, 3 multipliers 'bird nested', caught all the species - undersized, and only a billet to weigh-in.

And not forgetting the night Paul gets pulled & breathalysed.

The case of the ‘missing’ rockling, later found in a fish’s mouth when Brian gutted it.

Dropping a rod, smashing inserts and it snapping in two on the next cast, Danny Middlemas

Fingers & thumbs, dropping a 3 lb’er down the rock armour, grabbing the trace only for the hook to embed in a finger, ouch, Jonny Watson.

Dave Perrett admitted to tripping on bladder rack and found himself spread eagled on the scaur.

Jason Ebison caught 3 cod heads, seals had eaten the rest.

Rich Deadman walks backwards without looking, falls, and lands on his coccyx.

Paul Short losing his car keys again, and found inside his waders, again.

Davey Turnbull goes for the big cast, to land quote - ‘in the Norwegian fjords', cracks off, slips off his casting rock, and bait lands in front of him - all of 10yds.

Davey Turnbull leaving his car at Cowbar, gets a lift to Boulby.  His intention was to fish his way back to his car.  But the tide did not ebb, so he had to leg it back up Boulby cliff, and ran to his car, and still made the weigh-in - 12 lb 15 oz (4) for 3rd Place.
Finally

Storm Dudley Wednesday 16th Feb, and it is a blowing a gale.  To achieve a weigh-in would be an achievement in such conditions, and one would be elated for a weigh-in.  Dave Hambley later recounted he had landed the recipients best fish 3+lb’er and this member was elated.  However, getting to the Fleece he could not find his fish-bag in the vast car boot, and then told me at the scales, the reality, he had left it where he had parked his car.  He was gutted but accepted his misfortune, drove home via the car park to collect his fish-bag.  He missed 2nd Place 4 lb 15½ oz (3) & HFish 3 lb 10 oz of the night.  Unlike Davey Turnbull this lost weight did not affect his final position on the Leader Board.

I am pleased to announce the winner of the Most Memorable Moment trophy is James Jamsy Moore.
