A top tip [nee tale of woe] when fishing in such windy conditions, it is advisable to physically secure, nee tie down your kit securely. James Moore, fishing the East pier the gusting wind snagged his end tackle on the piers lower timbers. Dropping down the ladder to successfully retrieve end tackle and fish. Unhooking his fish he went for his fish bag, however it, and its contents were nowhere to be seen, and neither was his bait. All had blown away. James reported he had had ‘some’ bait, white rag, secured in his bag with which he managed to fish the last half of the match.

Top tip - always carry a spare reel. First cast of the night & I [Peter Horbury] was reeling in a fish within minutes. No time to put my head torch on [plenty of moonlight], I had not noticed the reels worm had failed, the bobbin was not rising & falling, and the line had balled up on the bobbin top. The fish was still 10/15m in-front & in the rocks. Quick thinking, I held my rod flat and positioned the bobbin half way, enabling a safe retrieve.

16.00hrs Sandsend beach
Low water 22.30 hrs, 1.7 metres, 997 mbar, 12°C
First match of the 2020 - 2021 Season. Traditionally members would have met for a group photograph at the Bandstand, Pier Road, Whitby. But due to Covid-19 restrictions members just went fishing, starting at 19.00hrs.
Catch forecast was very low as the sea state was flat, an all ebb match, a strong 16-30mph Southerly wind was forecast. Cloud cover 100%, rain was due, which started as members set off walking to their marks, getting progressively heavier. Soon after 19.00hrs it was torrential, and did not let up until 21.00hrs when the wind picked up.
Of the 21 members fishing, 14 made the weigh-in with 33 assorted fish - 19 codlings, 7 billets, 3 rocklings and 2 bleggs. Many thanks to all members for being patient and following the ‘weigh-in procedure’. Man of the Match Steve Ingleston, 3 codlings - 4 lb 15 oz, his best 1 lb 13 oz. Last years champion Dave Perrett weighed the HFish, a codling 2 lb 06 oz. Best billet Peter Horbury 1 lb 07 oz.
Being the first match, there were tales of woe. Mike Vickers reported ‘dropping off’ a really good fish last cast. Dave Perrett reported catching an undersized bass, and missing bite after bite - one of which pulled his rod off a rock. Paul Short had a head torch - ‘as bright as a fag end’ despite being fully charged. From Sunday the Monthly Sweeps start.

Hambley's Dozen
A big difference from Wednesday evening’s flat sea state, Storm Alex brought some welcome ENEasterly swell 4-6ft, plenty of colour. Unfortunately weed was in abundance, forcing members to move marks pretty early on in the 4hr match.
Fishing the last of the flood, and 3hrs of ebb, fish bites were slow to start for many. Some members reporting not catching any fish until the last hour. The wind, ENEasterly, brought two heavy rain squalls, the first at the start of the match, and the second 2hrs later. Starting in daylight it wasn’t properly dark until 19.30hrs, but once a head torch was used the sand flies got everywhere!
Of the nineteen fishing, 14 made the scales, a predominantly codling weigh-in 7 oz short of 100 lb, with three Double-figure bags. Just 4 fish 3 lb and above - Jason Ebison 3 lb 00 oz, Brian Harland 4 lb 02 oz, Dave Perrett 4 lb 09 oz (leads in ‘Dedicated Official Trophy') and HFish of the night 5 lb 08 oz from Paul Short*. Man of the Match Dave Hambley 11 codlings, and a rockling - 18 lb 05 oz - reported the sea state was borderline too heavy for some marks he frequents.
First match to count in the Monthly Sweeps, Dave Hambley 18 lb 05 oz (9) sets the HBoFish. Paul Short HFish 5 lb 08 oz.
*More jam than Hartleys - Paul Short, fished the Scarborough Festival, and had ‘lost’ his main head torch (his spare “as bright as a fag end”). Returning to Hayburn Wyke he found his ‘lost’ head torch in the grass, and used it for fishing the match. He had to move marks due to weed - so it got some use! Think that beats Dave Perrett losing a fiver down The Gare a few years back, and finding it two weeks later pinned up against the fence!
Knockouts draws will be drawn on Tuesday evening.

9 from Moore
High water 19.53 hrs, 4.92 metres, 1012 mbar, 10°C
With the evenings drawing in, it was not quite dark when the 3hr match started. The dominating low pressure system had moved over northern Europe, brought strengthening Westerly winds, and some close to shore local NWesterly swells. The sea state was to have grown further, but it did not!! Plenty of colour in the water, and some weed picked up off the shoreline, fishing up & over high water, the catch forecast was low.
Swell strength and frequency were frustratingly inconsistent. Heavy cloud cover so no star gazing to pass the time, only a fleeting glimpse of a vivid orange moon rising above the horizon was as good as it got. A very mild night, ‘no jacket required’. Fishing, for some was painfully slow, and fishless.
“A fish a chuck” reported Mike Saunders, but only 2 keepers. “Frustrating, a waste of good bait” reported Dave Perrett, weighing a single rockling.
The weigh-in overseen by weigh-master James Gilpin [and dogs] was disciplined, with members going home and not hanging around for any social gathering following the instructions as agreed at the AGM. It is hard & thanks to all for complying.
Fifteen of the 21 members fishing made the weigh-in. Thirty four assorted fish 23 codlings, 7 rocklings, 3 billets and the first whiting of the season, caught by Dave Ward. Man of the Match James Moore 9 codlings, the only double-figure bag 11 lb 00½ oz. Heaviest Fish of the night fell to Jason Ebison, caught on his first cast, a 2 lb 00 oz codling.
Results:- 34 fish - 36 lb 06 oz (Av 1 lb 01 oz)

Perrett's back
Low water 17.52 hrs, 2.68 metres, 1025 mbar, 7°C
High pressure, throughout the day the NNWesterly wind had been strong 18-21mph, Northerly sea state 5-7ft with some colour, neap tide. During the late afternoon ebb, the close-set swells had quickly died off, as had the wind. Heavy cloud cover and some persistent late afternoon heavy rain showers.
On the flood, the tide lacked impetus and strength, there was surging, and strong draw-back, far from ideal. The flood was very slow to get started, and it was obvious certain marks needed to fill-up quickly before the fish would come in to feed but with no strength in the flood, time was against many. A change of mark was needed to find the fish. The surging continued with periods of reasonable swells, and fish bites, followed by calm, waiting for the tide to catch-up with what swell was left. With the recent heavy seas, there were heavy deposits of weed on the high water-line, with some still trapped in the surf ‘noted in daylight’, and avoided later in the match.
At the scales many reported the fishing had been slow, small fish bites, and undersize catches, 23 members fished the 4hr match. The seasons best weigh-in 132 lb 14 oz as 21 weighed-in - 76 codlings, 6 rocklings, and a blegg. Some better fish from:- Danny Middlemas 4 lb 14 oz, Peter Horbury 4 lb 00 oz, Colin Stainthorpe 3 lb 07 oz, Jason Ebison 3 lb 02 oz.
Man of the Match, his first win of the season, Dave Perrett 10 codlings, 24 lb 00 oz included the HFish of the night 5 lb 12 oz. Dave also reported losing a much better fish. Dave now leads in both Monthly Sweeps & Dedicated Official Trophy.

"I had to work hard tonight" Dave Hambley
Low water 21.15 hrs, 1.7 metres, 1029 mbar, 8°C
Sea state NNEasterly had been running since Tuesday, 4-6ft regular swell sets, thick with colour, ‘but’, every anglers worst nightmare - weed. From reports, no one escaped weed in one form or another at some point in the 3hr match. A lot of fishing time was lost untangling strings/balls of weed, then walking from mark to mark [past drift after drift of weed] trying to find a weed free mark, and out of desperation trying somewhere new for a weigh-in!
The strong NEasterly wind did not give up all match 14-22mph, and had a definite chill to it - winter is coming. Cloud cover was minimal, with no moonlight. Fishing down to low water, the ebb was greater than tabled, allowing anglers to get into the tangle beds and gullys.
Lost fish tales of woe - Mike Saunders reported dropping a ‘better’ fish. James Gilpin lost one 5 yards in front of him, and Rich Deadman lost one right at his feet as he attempted to ‘walk-it’ up the scaur.
Twenty one fishing, 18 members weighed-in 55 codlings, 5 rocklings and a blegg. Three ‘double-figure’ bags from Dave Hambley, Brian Harland & Danny Middlemas. A better stamp of fish - match average 1 lb 15 oz - Peter Horbury 3 lb 06 oz, Rich Deadman 3 lb 06½ oz, James Gilpin 4 lb 09 oz, and the HFish Niki McCourt 4 lb 12 oz.
Man of the Match Dave Hambley, reported ‘he had to work hard’ for his catch, moving from mark to mark. Davey tops the Leader Board, 10 oz ahead of Brian Harland, both having a 10 lb+ match average after 5 matches.
Results:- 61 fish - 119 lb 07 oz (Av 1 lb 15 oz)

High water 17.51 hrs, 6.0 metres, 1015 mbar, 10°C
The 4 hr evening, all ebb, match started in daylight at high water. The close to shore NNEasterly swell, thick with colour, had been growing on the flood, turning into long distance swell 4-6ft. The swells continued to grow, with deep troughs between sets, the increasing sea state caught out a number of members as marks became unfishable. A change of venue - valuable fishing time being lost travelling to more favourable marks.
The dry SSWesterly wind 9-17mph had a definite nip to it despite heavy cloud cover. Weed was an issue for all, kelp stalks, bladder rack, and the fine green and purple grass varieties gathered on braid, and leader knots resembling ‘pipe cleaners’. The extra drag masking fish bites, and pulling end tackle into snags.
At the scales 6 ‘double figure’ bags, and a PB [HBoF] for Man of the Match Rob ‘Tink’ Taylor, 8 codlings 26 lb 01 oz included the HFish of the night 6 lb 06½ oz. Rob reported that he had to leave his mark as the sea state was too heavy. The next best fish 4 lb 04½ oz from 6th place Brian Harland. Of the 21 members fishing 17 had a weigh-in - 66 codlings, 4 rocklings, a blegg, and an LSD.
Find of the night - a whales vertebrae - found by Dave Hambley. With a 16 lb bag of fish he still managed to carry it off the scaurs.
Wednesday night - Singles Knockouts start.
Results:- 127 lb 10 oz (Av 1 lb 12 oz)

Colin's 'double' win
High water 20.03 hrs, 5.4 metres, 998 mbar, 13°C
First round of the WSAA Singles Knockouts, 21 members fishing up & over high tide as Storm Barbara making its way north. Slight Northerly swell 1m, plenty of colour, a strengthening SWesterly wind, and thinning cloud cover. Piers, and cliff marks were very popular with a few trying their luck on local beaches.
Fish were biting prior to high water but then it went quiet for an hour [slack water] with bites returning for the last hour. Plenty of small fish bites, nee bait robbers, kept members busy putting out fresh baits.
Eighteen members slowly returned to the scales with an assorted catch 34 codlings, 7 rocklings, 4 whitings, 2 bleggs, and 1 billet - weighing-in at 2 lb 10 oz caught by Peter Horbury.

Scratching Master Class from Paul
Low water 17.44 hrs, 2.63 metres, 985 mbar, 7°C
BST came to an end at 02.00hrs, but it was still light when the match started. Low pressure dominated, Storm Barbara, whose centre just west of Stornoway but slowly moving SEasterly. Sea state, flat calm, colour varied greatly from crystal clear to thick. The SWesterly wind was cold, especially on wet fingers, but was inconsistent. Strong gusts were followed by long periods of no wind at all. Minimal cloud cover, and a ¾ moon low in the sky. A scratching match for all Clubmen out & about.
A weigh-in required to maintain the WSAA 5 lb match/Average, to travel or not to travel? Pot luck, nowhere in particular could be said ‘to be fishing’. Many members opting to travel to tidal marks with very mixed results. James Gilpin & Dave Ward were fishing the last of the 1st Round Singles Knockout.
At the scales the SW wind had greatly strengthened for 11 successful members from 18 fishing. Man of the Match, Paul Short, fishing a two hook flapper [top tip] rig was kept busy, catching two at a time paid off. His best fish, a 2 lb 06½ oz billet, landed with a good codling at the same time. Plenty of undersized billets, mostly lip hooked, were safely returned. Paul's night got off to a 'shellfish' start, a good lobster first cast.
Heaviest Fish of the night, a 4 lb 10 oz codling caught by Dave Hambley, had ‘gilly’ James Gilpin to thank. Neither of Dave’s fish would have been landed if it were not for James’ help. The first being only lip hooked and caught in rocks, the second, well hooked, had the snood fouled in the rocks.
In the last Singles Round 1 match James Gilpin beat Dave Ward by 5 oz.
Last Sunday match of October - Dave Hambley has a 4 lb 07 oz lead over 2nd Place Brian Harland in the Sunday League.
Wednesday night [last match for October] is the start of the Doubles Knockouts.
Results:- 35 lb 01 oz (Av 1 lb 06 oz)
15 codlings, 5 rocklings, 5 billets, & 1 blegg.

14.30hrs Sandsend beach
First win Andy Neasham
Low water 20.24 hrs, 1.9 metres, 990 mbar, 8°C
South westerly winds for the 4th match in a row, and more to come the weather men forecast, from the tail end of Hurricane Zeta nears our shores. Sea state, flat calm, colour varied from mark to mark. Fishing a neap tide down to low water, and the start of the flood, which pushed-on very quickly despite the SWesterly wind. The strength of which was nowhere near as strong as forecasted [17-27mph] clear skies and a bright moon did not help the already poor conditions.
Twenty three members were fishing, 16 were competing in the Doubles Knockouts - scratching for a weigh-in. Niki McCourt reported a disastrous night, losing two spools of braid to crab pot lines. James Gilpin could only catch undersized codlings, apologising to his partner [Colin Stainthorpe].
At the scales only 12 had something to weigh-in, 17 codlings, 11 rocklings, 2 billets and a blegg 35 lb 10 oz which was only 5 oz better than the poorest weight this month. The only ‘mover’ on the Leader Board, and Man of the Match Andy Neasham
2 codlings, 2 bleggs - 6 lb 09 oz. His best, a codling - 2 lb 13 oz was not enough for HFish of the night, James Moore 3 lb 14 oz.

November 2020
Sun 1st Nov - 10 of 51 - Moonbow nee lunar rainbow
16.00hrs Sandsend beach #VeryWindy
Pot of gold for McCourt
High water 16.25 hrs, 5.4 metres, 981 mbar, 16°C
Storm Aiden wrought havoc on the evenings 4hr match, torrential rain, very strong gusting SSWesterly winds, and yet a very mild 16°C. Sea state, flat and crystal clear, catch forecast was low. A full moon did not help the already poor conditions, from which a rarely witnessed full ‘Moonbow’ nee lunar rainbow was clearly visible up the NEast coastline from 21.00hrs onwards as the skies started to clear but the rain did not! [A couple of members had neither ‘heard-of’ nor ‘seen one’ until I pointed it out. A Moonbow is not coloured like a rainbow, just white.] Moon less than 42° above horizon.
Eighteen members fished the all ebb match which started 1½hrs after high water. Fish bites were very hard to see let alone feel as the wind was relentless. Members needed to time their casting to avoid the worst of the gusting wind. Unable to tighten lines the wind had more line to drag end tackle into snags with heavy loses.
At the scales just 11 had fish to weigh-in [a couple retired early to dry off], an assorted catch of 18 codlings, 7 rocklings, 2 bleggs, and 2 billets. Early to the scales Niki McCourt took the ‘pot of gold’, both HFish 4 lb 01½ oz and HBoFish 8 lb 10½ oz. A remarkable achievement of such a night. The next best fish
3 lb 11½ oz from Dave Ward, reported ‘bumping’ another fish off mid match. Niki has set the bar for November’s monthly sweeps.

Wed 4th Nov - 11 of 51
07.30hrs Sandsend beach
Spragg McCourt PB
High water 17.58 hrs, 5.3 metres, 1036 mbar, 4°C
High pressure, set to dominate the weather, a welcome change for the coming days. Slight [2-3ft] NWesterly swell had grown throughout the day for the all-ebb match. A cloudless, dry night, however a bright orange moon rose above the horizon just as the match started. With crystal clear water & the bright moon did not bode well for the 3hr match. WSWesterly breeze was cold, but did not hinder casting nor bite detection.
Once the ebb picked up, the rhythm of the swell sets became irregular, with periods of calm, and from 21.00hrs weed became a problem. Bites were very finicky, one hit & no return, small fish.
Arriving at the scales weigh-master James Gilpin said ‘get your camera out Peter, there’s at least one good fish’. In good time, & for good reason Niki McCourt was first to the scales, slid a fine spragg into the pan 8 lb 01½ oz. Niki reported this was his ‘one & only bite’, and his personal best [PB] cod. It is takes the lead HFish of the Season - to date.
Man of the Match Brian Harland ‘a bag of rubbish’ he reported - 5 codlings, 2 bleggs and 2 rocklings 10 lb 10 oz. Dave Turnbull had a fine brace of codlings 6 lb 06½ oz & 3 lb 15 oz. Total catch - 36 codlings, 11 rocklings, 2 bleggs, 1 billet & 1 LSD. Sixteen of the 21 fishing weighed-in.
A codling, and a rockling for my efforts ☺.
Results:- 51 fish - 76 lb 07 oz (Av 1 lb 08 oz)

Update - Mon 30th Nov
As we all know, lockdown No.2 ends Wed 2nd Dec. 2020, and is replaced by a Government ‘3 Tier’ system.
MP’s are due to vote on this Tues 1st Dec. and it is a forgone conclusion it will be passed.
North Yorkshire is currently in Tier 2, Redcar & Cleveland is in Tier 3, and therein lies the problem for WSAA.
As a Club it would be irresponsible if we ran events which encouraged 44% of club membership to travel unnecessarily into Tier 2 from Tier 3. [please note fishing is not one of the listed exceptions for travel into and out of Tier 3.]
https://anglingtrust.net/covid-19/
The Angling Trust writes ‘we will be urging anglers to exercise common sense, and act within the spirit of the government’s guidance.’
The Angling Trust goes on to say ‘To comply with the travel guidance in the Winter Plan, match organisers will need to revise any planned competitions which could result in participants seeking to enter or leave T3 areas.’
Consequently the WSAA Committee will not be resuming organised match events for its members for the time being/foreseeable future.
As one committee member said - ‘We fish competitively as a club, or not at all.’
This will be reviewed should there be a change in either area-status.
