Dixon ten for 20 lb 01 oz
Low water 10.55 hrs, 1.47 metres, 1021 mbar, 5°C
On Sunday 21st November 2021 Whitby Sea Anglers Assoc. held its 42nd annual Open match sponsored by Wilf Nobles Plant Hire & Construction, Ruswarp. Fishing from 10.00 - 16.00hrs, with the weigh-in at the Fleece, Church St, Whitby from 16.30 - 17.00hrs.
High pressure, centred west of Iceland, started to dominate the weather late Saturday. The Northerlies increasing in strength, by Sunday anglers had to deal with 25-30mph winds, with added, chilly wintery showers, including hail. Sea state was a growing Northerly 8-12ft with plenty of colour. A growing sea, far from ideal, but the same conditions for all. It was not an easy 6hr match, anglers were quickly flooded out of low water marks, some marks became too heavy, both prompting a drive to a new mark - some threw in the towel and went home! The heavy seas ripped out weed, just to add to anglers’ woes. Fine purple weed and heavy kelp both reported, with Chris France, Ravenscar, reporting he’d seen enough weed to last a life time.
One hundred and seventeen seniors, 8 juniors had entered, of whom only 49 had a weigh-in. Weigh-master Bernard Vasey, assisted by Jason Ebison, and Chairman William Atkinson oversaw proceedings with all anglers weighed-in before 17.00hrs. Secretary Peter Horbury crunched the numbers, assisted by Rich Deadman while anglers enjoyed the hospitality & hot food provided by Landlady Carla Smith of the Fleece, Church St, Whitby. 123 codlings, and 1 billet weighed-in for 331 lb 04 oz - Av 2 lb 11 oz.
The winner - Steve Dixon, Seaham, won £600 - 10 codlings 20 lb 01 oz - his best 4 lb 08 oz was not enough for the Superpool.
In second place Andy Clark, Middlesbrough, won £300 - 4 codlings, 15 lb 10 oz - his best, a spragg of 8 lb 06 oz won the Superpool £78.
In third place Andy Tyman, Saltburn, won £100 - 5 codlings, 13 lb 08 oz - his best 5 lb 14 oz was not enough for the Superpool.
In fourth place WSAA member Rob Allison, Liverton 3 codlings, 13 lb 07 oz - his best, a spragg 7 lb 08 oz came second in the Superpool £39.
The 17th Place Special prize, sponsored by Dave Hambley £50 was shared by joint equal 16th Places Jamie Stavely, & Paul Medd, both from Scarborough.
The 34th Place Special prize, sponsored by Steve Ingleston £50 was won by WSAA Member Paul Neasham, Guisborough.
The Heaviest Other Species, sponsored by James Gilpin £30 was won by 31st place James Wood, Thirsk with a 14½ oz billet.
Special Prize £25 for Heaviest Flat Fish sponsored by Rich Deadman was not claimed, as none were weighed-in.

Talking after the presentation, time to rerlax, with members, I asked the question "How many leads do you take for a 6hr match?"
Continuing to say " I work on the principle 3 casts an hour, 6hr match, therefore eighteen 6oz leads." [grippers in this case]
Rich Deadman agreed with me, [18] 9 grippers, 9 plain leads.
Dave Perrett revealed he took 9 leads, with 2 spare in the car. Going on to say he snapped one off first cast, then lost another 4 in the first 2hrs. He went on to say he was worried about running out, but went home with 4 in his bag at the end of a match.

Psssstt - Jonny Watson thought he was going to blank! Last cast he caught a codling, his 100% weigh-in record in tact. The last one standing & won £25 for Last Place [49th].
Whilst waiting for anglers to be photographed, Davey Turnbull beckoned me over.
"Peter do I need my ticket to weigh-in?" "Yes, you can't claim a lottery prize from Camelot without showing your winning ticket." "But I'm parked by the amusements." "Best hurry then." On Davey's return Rob Allison & others joked "Scales are shut Davey!" Very cruel, but funny. |

My fishing mate Rich Deadman joined me at a mark just at low water.
"Where shall I cast?" he asked "Walked 50 yds left, and cast in so the wind doesn't take too much line." Ten minutes later, his rod butt is pulled off the ground as a fish bites. "It's a good fish." he said on the retrieve. I waded out to assist its safe landing. 5 lb 05 oz - no wonder he's smiling!!! |
Bernard Vasey started the raffle prize draw.
Many thanks to Dave Ward & James Moore for selling raffle tickets, and folding them up ready for the draw.
