Middlemas tops Open scales
Low water 12.05 hrs, 1.62 metres, 1010 mbar, 9°C, TR 4.0m
On Sunday Whitby Sea Anglers Association held its 43rd annual Open match, fishing from 10.00-16.00hrs. The weigh-in, hot food, and prize presentation was held in the Fleece, Church Street, Whitby. Many thanks to landlady Angela Fiori and her staff.
Conditions for the 6hr match were far from ideal, 1-2ft SSEasterly localised close to shore swell, with plenty of colour everywhere. The SSWesterly wind however was not kind, cold wind chill, 10 gusting 20mph. Overall a dull day, plenty of cloud cover. Eighty two senior anglers, including one lady, and 3 juniors took part for the £600 1st place prize, in part, courtesy of Wilf Nobles Plant Hire & Construction, Ruswarp.
Fishing the last 2hrs of ebb, and 4hrs of flood, the tide turned very quickly, assisted by the wind, anglers soon had to retreat back up the scaurs as the swell gently grew. Fish bites were timid, almost playful, one tap/pull and nothing more.
Missing from the scales was Bernard Vasey, a resounding ‘get well soon’ from all. So Jason Ebison, Peter Horbury & Rich Deadman oversaw the 34 successful senior & 2 junior’s angler’s to weigh-in a total catch of 72 assorted fish - 63 codlings, 5 wrasse, 1 blegg, 1 flat fish & 1 stripling conger eel* [returned alive to the harbour] for 126 lb 14 oz giving a 1 lb 12 oz average fish.

Winner of the 43rd Open, Man of the Match local angler and old WSAA member Danny Middlemas - 6 codlings 9 lb 02½ oz, his best fish 2 lb 10½ oz not enough for any of the top 3 fish in the Superpool. Unfortunately our Chairman William Atkinson is also unwell so Danny will be awarded the Whitby Townsmen Association Trophy at a later date.
Heaviest Fish of the match, and winner of the Superpool was Chris Scaife, Filey, 4 lb 06½ oz codling. Again, as Danny, Chris will be awarded the Whitby Sea Anglers Association Challenge Cup for HFish in the Open at a later date.

Due to William Atkinson [recovering from pnuemonia] and Bernard Vasey [sciatica] both being unfit to attend the weigh-in.
I personally stopped fishing at 3pm in order to be at the scales by 4pm [with Chris] to set-up the room, and start the weigh-in with Jason Ebison until relieved by Rich Deadman. Many thanks to Dave Hambley for helping to crunch the numbers. |

Feed back from members about the presentation in the Fleece after the weigh-in.
I have been told, the presentation could not be heard at the fireplace end of the lounge, despite me shouting, and repeated requests for quiet.
The problem was the drunk members of the public who thought it funny, when asked to be quiet, kept on talking
and ‘shhhh ing’ each other.
Basically I have been told, and agree the Fleece is no longer the right venue….
So food for thought.
Unless
1] the Fleece agree to close it doors for a private party 16.00 - 20.00 hrs to allow the presentation to go ahead.
2] and / or a PA system is used.
So apologies, members have asked for a meeting.
