Smooth Hounds
|
It was James Moore, nee 'Jamsy' on the phone.
"Do you want to come fishing tomorrow, and have you ever caught a Smooth Hound?"
"Yes & No" was my reply.
"Well I'm off to Holderness tomorrow to deliver some fresh crab to the Osborne's, so thought I'd fit in a couple of hours fishing. Caught 7 Smooth Hounds, 5 bass, & 1 codling earlier in the week, and the conditions are still good but it will turn for the worse this week. Pick you up tomorrow 8am, you'll need 30 fresh peelers, some 4/0, 2/0 (circle) pennel, pulley rigs, grip leads and light line, plus the usual gear, and it could rain!"
So it was organised and Jamsy arrived spot on 8am, loaded up and we were off. As we headed south the clouds turned black and the rain got heavier. It was to be a very wet days fishing.
Dropped half the delivery off with Osborne Snr, and continued to our chosen mark where Daniel (Ozzy) Osborne was waiting for his fresh peelers, and where he also was to be fishing with his mate Adam Peacham. See you at 3.30pm lads.
We kitted up quickly as the rain was relentless, thankfully not cold. Off we went down the track to the beach below, and met Alvin Waters who was already fishing but had had nothing 'yet'. Alvin reminded Jamsy that he had been fishing near to Jamsy on his last visit and was keen to catch his first Smooth Hound having now laid his hands onto some fresh peelers from a local tackle shop.

Jamsy was in first
Jamsy was slightly quicker than me to set up and was in the water first. No sooner had he cast in, he was into his first fish as it pulled his rod right over.
My first Smooth Hound
I went for the camera for Jamsy's fish, but quickly chucked it back into my bag as my rod butt flew into the air and clattered down into the rod rest - fish on. Playing the fish and in no rush, I landed my first Smooth Hound at 5 lb within 10 minutes of setting foot on the beach.
First cast and a 5 lb Starry Smooth Hound hooked on the circle hook.
We were using 20 lb braid mainline, with an 80 lb braid shock leader. The Smooth Hounds give a good fight and with braid every movement is felt, and the closer to the shoreline they got the more they fought. Once I had unhooked the circle hook, a quick photograph and released back into the water.
Alvin Waters - his first Smooth Hound
Jamsy & I had only been on the beach 10 minutes or so and we had already pulled in two Smooth Hounds when Alvin Waters grabbed one of his rods as it was nearly pulled out of his rod rest. After a short while he too landed his first Smooth Hound, and asked for a photograph as proof. Well done Alvin.
Best fish of the day my 2nd Smooth Hound at 7 lb 08 oz
Second cast and nothing but very fine grass on the line that makes it look like a pipe cleaner or a bell ringers rope. Very hard to remove, and may have been quicker to cut line and re tie the leader knot. Third cast was a disaster, caught the main line during casting and it snapped. Quick change of spools, new rig and baited up and back fishing. Rewarded with this 7 lb 08 oz Smooth Hound which had also picked up my 'crack off'. It was hooked on the circle hook.
The office view
A break in the weather, plenty of colour in the water and miles of quiet beach.
Turbot - my first
As the flood tide started to push the Smooth Hounds seem to move on, but I caught my first Turbot. Took the 4/0 Sakuma hook.
Jamsy was in again
Visibility improved, a wind farm on the horizon but the Smooth Hounds kept biting
This one had taken the 4/0 and the circle hook.
A codling for Jamsy as he tried to eat a banana
Panoramic - A break in the weather, some blue skies and sunshine
All in all, an excellent days pleasure fishing, and can strongly recommend fishing for Smooth Hounds.
High tide 3.30pm and time to pack up and head home,
but not before Daniel & Adam had shown us their catch!
Daniel (Ozzy) told us he always takes a 2nd, light rod and reel loaded with 12 lb mono. Having hooked a 'Smooth Hound' (he thought), he handed to rod to Adam to see how it felt on light gear and enjoy the play'.
Only Adam landed this 6 lb 03 oz bass. Adam said, at one point I thought it was lost, as it slack lined me.
Daniel said he's not giving Adam his rod again!
All in all, and from memory they had 2 bass and 14 Smooth Hounds.

their new PB
Smooth Hound
16 lb 09 oz
Hi Peter
I casted a full peeler about 60 yards. Jane hooked up and wound it in, until the last 15, where I had to take over as it was too strong for her. That 'AFAW 4 and Bait' is a great smooth hound rod, it takes a lot of the pressure off the angler and line in my opinion. Anyway, I set the drag as it was surging back out to sea and managed to land it after a few more minutes, a couple of photos and she tipped the scales at 16 lb 09 oz, a joint effort and our PB. We had two more doubles, 10 lb 11 oz and 13½ lb.
Talk soon
