WSAA Christmas Match Trophies
High water 15.19 hrs 5.49 metres & low water 21.39 hrs 1.30 metres.
Last match of 2014 and members close the year at the seasons mid-point with their annual Christmas match, where no one goes home without a prize. The match very kindly and generously sponsored again this year by Malcolm & Paula Pitman of Whitby Seafishing Supplies £100 – split £50, £30, £20 for 1st, 2nd & 3rd respectively. Heaviest Fish sweep wins the Help a Capital Child trophy. Presentation and a warming festive carvery was at The Stakesby Arms, Whitby. Many thanks to Tracey Stevens and her staff for their hospitality.
The forecasted 7 - 11 ft northerly swell never materialized and what northerly swell there was on the morning flood was knocked back by a screaming south westerly on the ebb tide. The 5 hr match started at 2pm, an hour and twenty before high water (15.20 hrs, 5.49 metres). Air pressure 1028 mbar, & 8°C at start. Some marks had colour where others did not, but generally fishing was hard work with the majority of members moving and travelling between different marks in search of a fish or two.
Early evening and there was a lull in the wind as it moved south south westerly bringing milder conditions 11°C, extremely mild for this time of year. Once darkness fell members reported being pestered by small billets over 30 cms but still under the size limit of 35 cms.
Of the 23 members fishing only 12 returned to the scales with an assortment of fish - 21 codlings, 2 billets, 9 rocklings, 1 whiting & 1 pollock for 61 lb 01 oz. The pollock 2 lb 15 oz, was the shock of the match, fell to Mick Beedle and was caught from Sandsend cliff and at the time Mick thought it was a billet bite until he hauled it up the cliff. No one recalls ever catching a pollock here. Mick also had a codling of 3 lb and lost a couple of others.
Man of the match and the 2014/2015 Christmas match champion is Matthew Garbutt who had 4 codlings and a rockling for 13 lb 00 oz. Matthew first won the trophy in 2011.
In 2nd place was Colin Stainthorpe with 9 lb 15 oz with 3 codlings, a rockling, and the Heaviest Fish of the match at
5 lb 00½ oz.
Rob Allison was 3rd 3 codlings and a rockling, his HF 3 lb 09½ oz for 8 lb 07 oz. Honorary Chairman William Atkinson was on hand to present the trophies and prizes.
That concludes December’s match fishing - 172 fish were caught for 326 lb 06 oz. In the monthly sweeps HB fell to Colin Stainthorpe 16 lb 04 oz Wed 17th and HF 6 lb 10 oz fell to Matthew Garbutt Wed 10th.
Many thanks to Bernard Vasey & James Gilpin for manning the weigh station. Huge thank you to WSAA Treasurer Dave Perrett for providing all the placed, and raffle prizes, stuffing the Christmas crackers with raffle tickets and scratch cards.
Well done to James Pearce, sadly unable to fish the Christmas match was pleasure fishing on Saturday night and was rewarded with a 3 lb 09 oz bass, in December!!
WSAA would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas & a Happy and prosperous New Year. Tight lines for 2015.
During the festive break there is the Festive Sweepstake on Sunday 28th, fishing 2pm to 8pm, weigh-in at Red Lion, Cloughton by 9pm.
Don’t forget there is The Station Inn Open fishing 9am to 3pm Sunday 4th January 2015.
