Chapman takes the honours
Low water 10.36hrs, 1.18m, 1012mbar, 9°C, TR 4.5m
Sunday saw Whitby Sea Anglers host their annual Open match. Ninety five seniors and 5 juniors competing for a £750 First Place prize, jointly sponsored by Wilf Nobles Plant Hire & Construction £500, and £250 Mariner A.
Conditions were favourable for the 6hr match, fishing from 10.00 - 16.00hrs, the weigh-in and match presentation held at Whitby Rifle Club. However the Northerly sea state, 8-10ft, was growing making some marks unfishable requiring a move mid match. Plenty of colour in the water, bright clear skies but a chilly WNWesterly wind gusting 22mph.
Low water at 10.36hrs, Whitby, the flood was nearly an hour late to take hold, but once flooding its progress was fast pushed on by the wind. Three local anglers had to help visitors off the scaur despite their earlier warnings that it was imperative to make their way off the scaurs or become stranded the wrong side of cut-offs.
Come 16.30hrs the queue for the weigh-in was out into the car park, as Chairman William Atkinson, and Rich Deadman methodically ‘scored’ the fish and weighed the fish, all 177 of them - 172 codlings, 2 bleggs, 1 bass, 1 billet and 1 flat fish.
Of the 100 rods, 54 weighed-in 506 lb 07 oz, giving an average of 2 lb 15 oz/fish. The leading junior Rhys Carr won £50, 53rd overall. The Heaviest Flat Fish 14½ oz winning £25 for local angler Damion Townsend.
The Superpool, sponsored £5 per match entry was boosted by £150 from Mariner A, giving a £624 prize pot split 2/3rd & 1/3rd for the two Heaviest Fish. Phil France, Scarborough had a fine spragg of 10 lb 06 oz for HFish. Local angler Mike Vasey was runner-up with another spragg of 8 lb 00 oz.
Overall winner of the 45th annual Open was Guisborough angler Brad Chapman collecting the £750 jackpot. In second Sean Crowe, Scarborough collected £200 with Mark Thomas, Scarborough collecting £100 for third place.
For 15th there was a special place prize of £75 collected by Dave Sayers, Saltburn.
The prizes went down to 40th Place. In Last Place Rob Pierson, Saltburn collect a special place prize of £30.
For those who were unfortunate to ‘blank’ there was a Lucky Ticket draw won by local angler Chris McCarthy £15.
After the prize giving the raffle was held with the top prize of Sunday lunch main course for two at Sneaton castle, kindly donated by Sue at Sneaton Castle, Whitby - won by Mark Stonehouse.
Many thanks to for all competing, tight lines and see you all next year, Sunday 23rd November 2025.
