Anglers started fishing to a half slow flooding tide and a calm sea state.  There were very few bites which resulted in low catches, again there were a selection of fish from codling, rockling, billet, whiting and a fine dab of 1 lb 14 oz caught by Neil Inglis was the Heaviest Fish. Link to Members record Fish WSAA and Club Records.

A south easterly blustery wind and a decent sea swell put plenty of colour back in the water for the mid-week match.  Although fishing a high tide from 7pm into an ebbing sea there were quite a few marks that were not fishable due to wind, causing problems with loose weed washing around in the swell.  Small codling in the 1 lb - 2 lb range were on the scales with 3 flat fish and a billet, with best fish of 4 lb 09 oz, weighed-in by William Atkinson.

Strong winds had eased for the midweek match but the westerly winds left a very calm sea as club members fished a low water to flooding tide.  A choice of fishing the hard ground of the scaurs or the soft beaches had to be made to find fish.
The winning bag was caught by Jason Ebison who chose the sands.

There was a much improved result in the evenings match as a high tide ebbing from a moderate south south easterly lazy long distance swell created movement for the fish to venture closer to shore in their hunt for food.
Once the tie had turned and the scaurs began to show, anglers were able to cast and reach the codling which had dropped back into runs and holes along the shore.  Ian Russell not only had a winning heaviest bag of fish - 12 lb 15 oz - 4 fish, including one of 8 lb 02 oz.  This is the Heaviest Fish for January beating Paul Kilpatrick’s - 4 lb 04 oz codling, caught in the Ship Inn Open match.

Expectations of catching a few codling in the nights club match were high due to fishing a high tide ebbing and a growing sea swell which favoured quite a few marks.
However there was only one member Rob Allison who had the best result with his winning catch of 6 codling for 15 lb 10 oz.

The swell continued to run into Thursday night and this brought out anglers to fish the west Pier, beaches and the scaurs and reports of plenty of codling and good size whiting had been caught, with Whitby Sea Angler Brian Harland catching a
9 lb 04 oz cod.  Not quite big enough for the Heaviest Fish Out of a Club Match held by Denis Thompson - 9 lb 09 oz, caught in the Victorian Open 7th December 2002.

Sun 26th Jan - 33 of 51

The swell had fallen and this left the sea state for most marks quite calm in the 4 hr match due to the constant strong westerly winds which remained throughout the night.  There was another mixture of fish returned to the scales with a few rockling beginning to show, 2 members had double figure bags, the winning weight was caught by Denis Thompson -

There was still enough sea swell left for the match but anglers had to find a sheltered mark to fish from a blustery cold northerly wind and fishing a low water into flooding tide meant they would be on open scaurs.

There was only close to shore movement, with a south westerly keeping the sea fairly calm on a frosty night.  Most anglers choose to fish the soft ground to catch whiting and a chance of a codling.

Wed 5th Mar - 44 of 51

Whitby Sea Anglers Association members entered into the last month of winter shore angling which started last October 2002 and although this can be a quiet month all that is needed to bring the fish in to feed is a good sea swell.
In the match the sea conditions were calm and a mild night as anglers cast out into an all ebbing tide, 18 whiting, 5 codling and a billet were weighed-in, once again the better fish still remain to feed on hard ground with the best bag of the night being caught by Colin Stainthorpe.

A very slow flooding 4.1 metre tide on a frosty night was fished with a north by north easterly sea swell providing plenty of colour and movement for a good night to fish.  There were a lot of small fish bites early in the match but as the depth of water increased the better codling swam in.  Two anglers had 4 fish each, William Atkinson had the biggest bag.

9 lb 15 oz.
Heaviest bag was won by Chris Scaife 28 lb 12 oz, 7 fish.

Bell Trophy
Conditions were again poor as usual for this competition with a strong westerly wind throughout the day, there were 87 anglers taking part from nine clubs.  Remind me to tell you not to turn up on time next year as we were stood around waiting for half an hour in the cold for everyone else to turn up.  But despite the weather there was a much improved catch on last years with 34 anglers weighing-in 86 lb 06 oz from 60 assorted fish.
Winners this year were Cloughton with 16 lb 15 oz agg. 2 lb 01 oz.
Whitby were 3rd with the most weight (but the most anglers) 22 lb 06 oz agg. 1 lb 07 oz.

The winner of the individual singles knockout was Neil Inglis who kept his form to stop the new boy in the club Jason Ebison in the runner up position.
The doubles knockout winners were Brian Harland & Adrian Nelson.
Runners up - Colin Stainthorpe 7 Steve Ingleston.
