Members Christmas match fishing 14.00 - 19.00hrs, weigh-in at the Met, West Cliff. Sea state, a freshening Northerly 2ft, surface blash, little to no colour, a scratching match for the 25 entered. A cold NNEasterly breeze 12mph with some drizzle, 100% cloud cover.
Fishing the last 2hrs of flood, and 3 hrs of ebb left little in the way of mark options, unable to get out onto the scaurs, travel and fish for whitings off the piers, or fish the high water-line on the hard ground rock marks for the chance of a codling? Up for grabs were the Christmas Match Trophy, and The ‘Michael Deadman Memorial Trophy’, for the Heaviest Fish, sponsored by Rich Deadman £50. The match was kindly sponsored by WSAA members Mark Sivils & Mike Vickers, the £200 fund split between the Top-Six, £50 for the winner, £40, £35, £30, £25, & £20 for 6th place. Thereafter the pick of the table for ‘all’.
It was a long day for some, undersized fish or biteless. Tactics, [see photo] Peter Horbury opted for a two hook flapper rig 1/0’s for rocklings first cast, bait - peeler legs and a single mussel. Casting in late, just after 14.05hrs, propped his rod in the rocks, and started to bait up a second rig when Rich Deadman shouted ‘your rod’. It was bent over as a fish pulled away. Picking the rod up nothing, then a stronger pull, the ‘gentle’ retrieve began so as not to bend out the 1/0 hook. Rich was on hand to ghillie the red codling, fish in the bag before 14.15 hrs. Neither of us had a bite for the rest of the match despite moving twice!
Outside the Met, West Cliff, at the scales Jason Ebison, and Colin Stainthorpe oversaw the weigh-in, 32 whitings, 7 codlings, 3 billets, 4 rocklings, 3 dabs, 1 pollock. Man of the Match, Dave Ward, Guisborough, 10 whitings and 2 dabs 7 lb 01 oz. Heaviest Fish fell to Colin Stainthorpe, Whitby, [2nd overall] 3 lb 08½ oz. Next best fish Peter Horbury 3 lb 02½ oz.
After the weigh-in members retired to the Met Ball Room and enjoyed a carvery, after which the presentation was held by Secretary Peter Horbury, and Chairman William Atkinson. During which the winners of the 2020 - 2021 Season Doubles Knockouts were presented with the trophy. Runners-up Andy Neasham and Mike Saunders. Winners were Paul Short and Brian Harland.
Being the Christmas match, no one goes home without a prize, names of those who did not weigh-in were drawn from a hat, and given the pick of the prize table which Dave Perrett had organised.

2020 - 2021 Doubles Knockouts presentation
At the 2021 AGM it was agreed to present this ay the Xmas match so the winners could have the trophy before it is handed onto the 2021 - 2022 winners at that presentation evevning.
Members enjoyed a carvery by the staff at The Met, West Cliff, after which the presentation began by Secretary Peter Horbury.
Peter asked the members to join him and thank the host Justin Bray, chefs Caroline & James for the excellent food. And not forgetting the bar man Phil.
Peter then went on to thank our sponsors Mike Vickers & Mark Sivils for their generous donation of £100 each. Treasurer Dave Perrett had bought them a gift, Chairman William Atkinson invited them to the stage to receive, and be properly thanked by the members.
Next Rich Deadman was thanked by members for the £50 sponsorship of his fathers memorial trophy, given for the heaviest fish caught on the day.
Peter asked members to show appreciation and thanks to Dave Perrett for the work he had put in in organising all the prizes, and raffle prizes.
The Top Six were all to receive cash prizes from the sponsorship so the presentation started at 7th Place.
After which Peter announced the winners of the 2020 - 2021 Season Doubles Knockouts which were completed this season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Runners-up - Andy Neasham & Mike Saunders received their plaques & winnings.
Winners - Brian Harland & Paul Short received their trophy, plaques & winnings.
Peter then went onto announce the top six, in reverse order.
Colin Stainthorpe was 2nd overall, but also had the Heaviest Fish 3 lb 08½ oz so William Atkinson presented him with his 2nd place winnings. Then Rich Deadman presented The Michael Deadman Memorial Trophy, and £50.
Being the Christmas match no one goes home without a prize.
The names of those who unfortunately did not catch a fish were drawn from the hat, and invited to pick a prize from the prize table.
Presentation over it was now the raffle draw, done by Rich Deadman.
Many thanks to all for attending, and see you all next year, Merry Christmas.
