The annual social match, Whitby Sea Anglers - V - Cloughton Rock Anglers, fished 10.00 - 16.00 hrs on Sunday. This year Cloughton picked the date and Whitby the hosts at the Fleece, Church Street. The winner of the trophy is the team with the best aggregate weight. Seventeen anglers from WSAA fished against 9 from Cloughton Rocks.
The conditions themselves were a ‘challenge’, Storm Jorge [pronounced ‘hor-hay’ - named by the Spanish Met Office] very strong WSWesterly wind 24mph+ with potential gusts of 45mph. A bright dry day, sea state was best described as ‘flat’ with the occasional swell until the flood which had potential to grow. Water clarity - very little to no colour depending on fishing mark.
The weigh-in, outside the Fleece was overseen by weigh-master Bernard Vasey, assisted by Jason Ebison. With only 45mins from match end to weigh-in, anglers were slow to return even with the reduced boundaries - Cowbar Steel to Robin Hoods Bay, Landing Scaur. After the weigh-in anglers retired to the Fleece, where landlady Carla Smith had prepared hot food, pie & peas, and refreshments. Many thanks from all.
Just sixteen assorted fish - 8 codlings, 6 rocklings, 1 flounder, and 1 blegg - 17 lb 03 oz. Whitby weighed-in 10 lb 05 oz giving an aggregate of 9½ oz. Cloughton weighed-in 6 lb 14 oz giving them a winning aggregate of 12 oz. Mark Stonehouse, Cloughton Rocks secretary was presented with the Secretary’s Challenge Trophy by Peter Horbury, WSAA secretary.
Each club put £50 into the prize fund, each angler £5, giving a total of £235*. This was split 50/50, for HBoFish & HFish sweeps. £58.75, £35.25 & £23.50 each for 1st, 2nd & 3rd.
*Mark Stonehouse did not fish but added £5 to the prize fund - many thanks.
