09.30hrs, Oasis Café, Marine Drive, 58 anglers gathered by invitation from Scarborough Rocks to compete for the Sana Bell, better known as ‘Bell Trophy Day’. Five local clubs made up teams, [minimum 8] fishing from 11.00 - 15.00hrs with the weigh-in at Scarborough Rocks Social Club.
Sea state, 6-10ft Northerly swell with plenty of colour, appeared to be growing. Although a little heavy, these were the best conditions for many a year. A mix of weather conditions from bright warming sunshine to an icy cold shower. Wind 12mph which became gusty during a squall or two, after 13.20hrs.
Within minutes [seconds for some] of the match start, weed dragged many a line down, re-bait and move. Fish bites, “not one” reported many. Surging was a problem right from the start, after a rush, the mark looked perfect and then too heavy, and repeat, but after low-water swells, & surging settled.
Davey Turnbull, Darlington reported losing a really good fish. Played it around two rocks when it got its head down, slack line and wait but on the third attempt, his hook snood snapped.
At the scales only 28 weighed-in 25 fish 50 lb 08 oz 12 drms
HFish - 4 lb 13 oz 08 drms - Billy Colling
HBoFish - 9 lb 05 oz 06 drms - Billy Colling
