Saturday 20th April 2024 - Wilson Arms, Sneaton
Good evening ladies & gentlemen.
Please could we all show our appreciation to Dawn, Dan and their staff for their hospitality here at the Wilson Arms, thank you.
This is our 69th presentation evening, maybe next year our treasurer will release Club Funds and take us all out to celebrate 70yrs? [I'm told the look on David's face said it all - No]
Talking of 70yrs, Happy Birthday to Denis.
Before I quickly summarise the season, I think you will all agree a big thank you is in order to Bernard and Jason for their commitment to overseeing the weigh-ins, even when they may not have fished themselves. Thank you.
Bernard has officially retired from overseeing weigh-ins and has also stepped down from the Committee. So in his absence could we all raise a glass and toast Bernard.
Thank you.
-----------
This season’s weigh-in was only 15 lb 07 oz more than last season, with 99 more fish caught.
We had nineteen fishing members, 16 being the max to fish a match and 4 being the least, only Brian & I fished every match.
Thirteen different members won a match, 9 members won both HBoFish & HFish on the same night.
Brain, 7 times, Davey Turnbull 5 times, Colin 4 times, Dave Perrett, Dave Hambley, Ryan, Rob and myself twice each, with Paul Kilpatrick just once.
Monthly Sweeps were well supported as last season - 10 for HBoFish and 11 for HFish.
For a moment I thought Davey Turnbull & Rob were taking turns on winning each month until Ryan popped-in. Five members won all 12 prizes with Rob winning the most.
September
Storm Agnes.
First match, 8 fished Colin won and I had HFish 3 lb 02 oz.

Sun 12th Dave Hambley HFish in the Redcar & Cleveland Sea Angler Doreen Dalton Memorial Shield 5 lb 07 oz, and later that evening is the 3rd to join the 100 lb Club.

With literally seconds to spare it nearly wasn’t a good day for Colin, he had forgotten the scales closed at 19.45hrs, as last year, taking both trophies.
Wed 13th Dylan Gold-spragg-smith 7 lb 15 oz, this fish would have won the Monthly Sweeps, ‘IF’ he had entered. Storms Elin & Fergus had blown through.
Dylan was chuffed with his catch but less amused with Neil Eglon as he’d just ‘watched & laughed’ as his Dylan struggled on the shale-plates, ‘slipping & sliding’ trying to pick up his catch with rod under his arm [Dylan had earlier aided landing one of Neil’s fish & obviously was expecting the same service in return]. Eventually getting it picked up, he cuddled it back to his tripod, and proudly displayed it to us all. Memorable Moment!

Sun 4th Brian lands the season’s first LSD
Wed 7th Rob messaged me to say he was going fishing, I replied a ‘Donkeyote’ please as it would clear up a few loose ends, literally.
Rob did not disappoint ‘Late’ afternoon, the phone rings, “Are you in Pierre, I’ve got the biggest fish I’ve ever caught?” Rob, exclaimed.
The scales read 15 lb 14½ oz the Heaviest Fish Caught Out of Competition nee the David "Sten" Stonehouse Memorial Sandsend Trophy, and a Personal Best for Rob, congratulations.
Sun 11th Paul Kilpatrick wins the match and has the HFish 6 lb 00 oz and would have won February’s Monthly Sweep had he entered.
Wed 14th Valentines Day, Match 38, Brian’s 100% record of weigh-ins comes to a dignified end.
Sun 18th east pier with Brian and we were entertained by 3 anglers with the biggest & brightest tip lights I’ve ever seen. But the ‘pièce de résistance’ each rod with a bell ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫♪ ♪ ♪….. oh the joys of tintinnabulation.
Sun 25th Secretary’s Challenge Trophy Cloughton Rocks won with an aggregate of 7 oz to Whitby’s 5 oz - Congratulations to Secretary Mark Stonehouse and his team. Cloughton Rocks now lead 5 - 3 wins.

27th Dave Perrett joins 200 lb Club.
3 Double-figure bags.
All in all 44 Double-figure bags for the Season.
---------------
For those who have viewed the ‘What If Points were Used’ page on the web site. Some print outs available.
It is where 10 points are awarded for a win, then 9 for 2nd, 8 for 3rd etc. as you can see…..
Colin would have ended the season in 3rd, and not 5th.
I would have been 4th and not 8th.
Davey Turnball would have been 5th and not 3rd.
Dave Hambley would have been 9th and not 7th.
The system rewards those who fish every match of the season.
Food for thought.

Sunday League
Trophies & shields for the Top Ten [in reverse order]
Memorable moments
Rob 'Tink' Taylor has to dive on top of his 7 lb 10 oz spragg because it unhooked itself in the rocky foreshore.
Jason Ebison 28 whitings, none WSAA size and sadly #Blanked
Seesaw - East Pier, Rich Deadman & Brian Harland appeared to have hooked the same fish - neither landed it.
Someone ‘hungry nosed person’ took Dave Perret's Cornish pasty, which he had left on the table next to his bag!
Storm Jocelyn subsides. Dan Middlemas just manages to save his rod as a fish drags it and tripod towards the water across the scaur, alas no fish to land.
Despite having to return home for his head torch Paul Kilpatrick was Man of the Match inc HBoFish & HFish - 6 lb 00 oz but not entered into Monthly Sweeps and would have won.
Rob 'Tink' Taylor late start, fluffed cast and caught a mop within 5 mins, more jam than Hartleys. Later the surging, washed over Rob Taylor’s tripod, inc bait bucket, frozen peelers floating away.
Starting the match on the west pier, Paul Kilpatrick was given the run around by a number of Turnstones who took a liking to his bait, and enjoyed an uninvited free meal!
So who wins?
Chris nee Good Lady Wife has suggested Davey Turnbull recounts a story to reveal this years winner.

Chris nee Good Lady Wife has suggested Davey Turnbull recounts a story to reveal this years winner.
Davey Turnbull narrates the story - the day after the Bell Trophy, and he's cleaning his car out.
Joking that there were pop cans, crisp packets etc from his passengers.
Sliding his hand in the passenger door well he brushes a plastic bag. On closer inspection, to his horror Denis’ false teeth are inside, and smiling back at him.
Poor lad must be starving by now without his teeth.
Davey Turnbull’s partner Vanessa recounts being picked up from work that night, and at every corner a plastic bag slides from side to side on top of the cars dash.
She asked Davey what is that?
O it’s just Denis Thompson’s false teeth!
Raucous laughter

33 - Just when I thought it was safe to sit down, Jason Ebison had one last presentation to make. Apologising for being responsible denying me a 100 lb weigh-in when I inadvertently weighed-in some 32cms whitings, Club size being 33cms. I had not updated my laminated Fish Size sheet. [Legal size 27cms] I was told to open the box in front of everyone - revealing a Master Baiter novelty mug. Many thanks Jason. Dave Hambley & Davey Turnbull hoped the friendly rivalry would continue. Jason had promised to beat me at season start! |
