After an excellent meal & superb hospitality at Dunsley Hall WSAA Secretary Peter Horbury summarised the season and members achievements.
There was a domino card provided for guests, and Colin Stainthorpe won £25.
Good evening.
Nice to see you all after so long.
Could we show our appreciation to the staff here at Dunsley Hall after another excellent meal?
Hopefully everything will slowly return to normal as we celebrate our 65th & 66th Annual Presentation evenings rolled into ‘one’.
I am sure there are many questions as to what is going to happen to various events, these will be ironed at the AGM on the Wednesday 1st Sept.
To summarise the season 2019 - 2020:-
Membership was up 4 to 39, sadly no juniors. Davey Turnbull has kept us all amused with his quips and anecdotes. Everyone looks at ‘data’ in different ways, some for their job others just for interest. Speaking to Dave Hambley he asked if I had a page on the web to compare the clubs monthly catches over the years. No, but I did create one at his behest, and ‘Catch Overlay’ was born. This highlighted some interesting facts. Over the Covid-19 shutdowns I have completed 1984 to the present day. From this I found October 2019 broke all WSAA records. 807 lb 11 oz, 447 fish.
Total weight for the season - 2,807 lb 14 oz
Total Number of fish - 1,641
October
First match and the tail end of hurricane Lorenzo was inbound. Brian Harland wins, and weigh-master Bernard has the HFish 3 lb 13 oz. Match 2, and a sign of things to come Dave Hambley pips Dave Perrett by 1 oz with a season best 21 lb 01 oz (5) his best 6 lb 02½ oz. Match 4 and Mike Saunders surprises everyone with a 1 lb mackerel, and a pollock to win. Match 6, and 7 double figure bags. By Match 8 Dave Perrett had a 30 lb lead over Denis Thompson. Last match of the month and Dave Hambley weighs the only double figure bag to trail Dave Perrett by 26 lb.
October was dominated by Dave Perrett 12 lb 10 oz, 18 lb 07 oz and a 20 lb 10 oz bag, 46 fish to Dave Hambley’s 28.
November
First match, and the first spragg from Rob Allison 8 lb 11 oz, three double figure bags from Rob Allison, Rob Taylor and myself. Match 11, and Dave Perrett was the first to the 100 Club, 42 lbs ahead of Dave Hambley. Dave Perrett did not have it all his way, and in Match 12, and Rob ‘Tink’ Taylor took the honours 9 codlings 17 lb 11 oz with Mick Beedle taking HFish 6 lb 02 oz. Match 13, and plenty of 4 lb’ers, the best from Brian Harland 4 lb 14½ oz, Dave Hambley Man-of-the-Match 9 lb 10 oz.
Match 14, our 40th Annual Open match, jointly sponsored by Wilf Noble Plant Hire & Construction and Hook, Line & Sinker. Many thanks to Malc & Paula Pitman. 151 anglers took part fishing a NEasterly swell 3-4ft, 14-17mph NNE wind. 63 rods weighed-in, 155 fish, 379 lb 12 oz, 150 codlings and 5 bleggs. Niki McCourt was 6th, Mark Sivils 7th, Dan Middlemas 8th, and myself 13th the top 4 Whitby rods with double figure bags. The aftermath of the Open was for all anglers to be banned from parking in Northcliffe Caravan Park despite my best efforts.
Match 15, and Danny Middlemas took both the honours, as Dave Perrett fails to weigh-in, but still had a comfortable 26 lb lead over Dave Hambley.
Match 16, 6 double figure bags and winner Neil Eglon turns up with a bin liner of 8 fish, 20 lb 03 oz, turns out he wasn’t entered into the Monthly Sweeps. New member Mark Sivils HFish, a spragg of 7 lb 03 oz, and Keeley weighs-in a fine cod of 3 lb 11½ oz for a bag of 4 lb 15 oz (2).
Last match for November and the honours fell to Brian Harland. The month overall fell to Dave Perrett, 49 lb very surprisingly I was second with 44 lb. Of the 8 matches Dave only won two.
December
Sunday 1st November, Denis ‘Nasher’ Thompson a cod of 6 lb 02½ oz pips Dave Ward to HFish by ½ oz. Luke McCourt came 3rd in the Cloughton open with a fish of 6 lb 00 oz, and Dave Hambley joins the 100 Club.
Match 19, and Dave Perrett fails to weigh-in for the second time.
Match 20, the UK was braced for the Irish named Storm Atiyah, and a red weather warning, the honours went to Colin Stainthorpe 8 lb 04 oz (4), and another win the following match.
Match 22 - The Victoria Hotel Open Niki McCourt 9th, Brian Harland 11th and Dave Ward 13th. Later that evening Dan Middlemas had Paul Garbutt to thank for his match win, he had left his bait flask at home.
Math 23 and what a “knockout” for Brian Harland - V - Dave Perrett, and a quote from Dave “Of all the nights to catch a spragg, the Singles Knockouts! Well done Brian, well beaten.” Brian only had 1 fish a 10 lb 05 oz spragg. Dave thought he was in with a chance 3 codlings, 6 lb 07 oz.
Last match of 2019, the Christmas match -
Many thanks to Malc & Paula for sponsoring this members only match.
Rob Allison won [for the 6th time] an 18 lb 06½ oz bag of 9 codlings. He also had the Heaviest Fish 4 lb 14 oz so won The Michael Deadman Memorial Trophy for the Heaviest Fish.
In second place, Davey Turnbull, Darlington, a 17 lb 02 oz bag of 7 codlings, inc. 4 lb 11 oz. Davey, reported dropping two fish off in the surf, can only reflect on ‘what could have been’.
During the Christmas break Rob Allison came to my house to weigh-in the Heaviest Fish Out of Competition - 6 lb 13½ oz on Friday 27th December.
January 2020
Dave Perrett marched on 17 lb 06 oz, one of 4 ‘double figure bags’. With Luke McCourt weighing-in a spragg of 7 lb 07 oz.
Sun 19th Jan and Dave P joins the 200 Club, 7 codlings 21 lb 09 oz and Mark Sivils lands the heaviest Fish of the month, a fine spragg of 8 lb 11 oz
In the Bell Trophy we put in two teams, Team B came 2nd whilst Team A came last. Dave Ward won Heaviest Fish - 5 lb 12 oz 12 drams.
February
On the 5th Dave Ward celebrated his birthday with both HF & HBoFish wins.
After an absence of 18 years, the east pier extension bridge is lowered into position.
Initially I thought February 2020’s weigh-in was the best. That was until I did the catch overlay for 1986 - 1987 when 404 lb 05 oz from 249 fish were recorded beating 2020 by 4 lb 04 oz from 254 fish.
March
Sun 1st, and the Secretary’s Challenge Trophy was won by Cloughton Rock Anglers aggregate - 12 oz to 9½ oz
Match headlines included
Weigh-in 5 lb 04 oz - 4 fish - Dave Ward
Rambo’s Fight back - Dave Hambley 4 lb 14 oz - 3 fish
Darlo Turnbulator mops scales [3 lb 11 oz - 2 fish]
Rambo double 200 club - [11 lb 00 oz - 7 fish]
Horbury double win trophy chase [HF 4 lb 01 oz & HBoF 7 lb 10 oz]
And the last 3 matches were cancelled due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Moving on to the ‘Trophy Presentations’ we will present the trophies, and then replace them on the table so we can do 2020 - 2021 Season afterwards.
After which you can take your trophies home.
Thank you

Trophies & shields for the Top Ten [in reverse order]
There are a number that I recall, from myself slipping & falling on the rocks down RHB and snapping the handle off my reel and shattering rod rings [always carry a spare reel].
A number of members not entered into the monthly sweeps or not paying match entries, returning with good fish.
Mice and rats eating baits, to the 'ones' that got away.
However Jason Ebison had two Memorable Moments -
Jason, fishing, rang his wife [volunteer coast guard] to ask if she knew what was going on in Sandsend car park with the Coast Guards arrival, blues & twos.
"A light had been reported on the rocks at Shotstones." Claire replied
“You mean this one!” asked Jason switching his lamp on & off.
"Yes!" Coast Guard stood down.
Fishing down the west pier, using 1/0 flapper rigs Jason caught a 6 lb 04 oz fish which, when lifted by James Moore fell off. Luckily it landed on the concrete & Dan Middlemas went down for it.
Well done Jason you are the winner of the Most Memorable Moment.
